Ananya Bhakti…
How many of us do get immersed in the melodic, enchanting music of Sai Krishna’s flute, completely intoxicated, forgetting our own selves??? Bhagawan narrates the essence of true, unparalleled devotion…Ananya Bhakthi… From Bhagawan’s Divine discourse at Abbotsbury, Chennai, on 19 Jan 1986.
A Gopika once asked Radha how she felt when she saw Krishna, how her heart responded, what transformation occurred in her and what joy she experienced. Radha replied: “The moment I hear the melodious flute of Krishna, my heart becomes still, and I forget myself when I learn that Krishna is coming. I am lost in the music of His flute and I am aware of nothing else. How can I describe to you my feelings when I am intoxicated by the magic of His melody?”
The God intoxicated devotee cannot describe his blissful experience in words. One who attempts to express it, has no real experience of it at all.
Those who regard themselves as devotees should recognise the vast difference between their narrow minded attitude and the ineffable character of true devotion. They should resolve to shed all their petty attachments and develop steadfast devotion to God as the main object of their life. For this purpose, the company of the good is essential. Good thoughts are promoted only through association with the good. This means avoiding contact with the evil minded and the unrighteous. Association with bad persons makes even a good person bad. There are classic examples of the evil consequences of association with the bad. Kaikeyi in the Ramayana and Dharmaraja in the Mahabharata are examples of persons who suffered grievously because of their association with evil minded persons Manthara in the case of Kaikeyi and the Kauravas in the case of Dharmaraja.
Everyone must strive to fill the heart with true devotion. Constant contemplation on the form of the Lord and frequent repetition of the Lord’s name are the means by which the heart is filled with the love of God. When there is this love, the devotee is filled with inexpressible ecstasy. It was out of such ecstasy that Kulasekhara Alwar, the royal saint, exclaimed: “Oh Lord! People talk of Moksha as the means of redeeming life and getting rid of birth and death. I do not ask for such redemption. I shall be content with loving you and serving you in countless lives. Allow me to love you and serve you that is the only blessing I seek from you and not Moksha.”
Ananya Bhakti – A Sacred Path Of One-Pointed Devotion And Surrender
Ananya Bhakti is the pure devotion in which the heart turns toward God without division, doubt, or selfish calculation. It is not ordinary love that changes with circumstances. It is a deep, steady, and complete surrender where the devotee feels that God alone is the true refuge, guide, protector, and goal of life.
Human beings often divide their love among many desires. The mind runs after wealth, comfort, praise, relationships, success, and pleasure. While these may have a place in worldly life, they cannot give lasting peace. The soul becomes peaceful only when its deepest love is directed toward the Divine.
Ananya Bhakti teaches that devotion should not depend only on fulfilled wishes. Many people pray intensely when they need something, but forget God when life becomes comfortable. True devotion remains steady in joy and sorrow, gain and loss, health and sickness, praise and blame. It trusts God’s wisdom even when the mind cannot understand His plan.
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba often reminded devotees that love for God should transform daily conduct. Devotion is not only singing, praying, or visiting holy places. It must be seen in purity of thought, kindness of speech, honesty in action, and service to others. A heart that truly loves God cannot deliberately hurt anyone.
Ananya Bhakti becomes meaningful when the devotee gives up egoistic bargaining with God. The devotee does not say, “I will love You only if You give me what I want.” Instead, the heart says, “Lord, You know what is best for me. Give me strength to accept Your will and live according to Your guidance.” Such surrender brings great inner peace.
This path does not mean running away from duties. A true devotee performs family, social, and professional responsibilities with sincerity, but offers everything to God. Work becomes worship when done without ego. Service becomes prayer when done with love. Even ordinary actions become sacred when the heart remembers the Divine.
Ananya Bhakti also reminds us that God should not be remembered only at fixed times. Morning prayer is good, evening bhajan is good, and temple worship is good, but remembrance should slowly become continuous. While walking, working, eating, speaking, and resting, the inner feeling should remain connected with God.
The one-pointed devotee does not become narrow-minded. Loving one form of God deeply should not create disrespect for other forms. God is one, though names and forms are many. A sincere devotee sees the chosen form as the doorway to the same Supreme Reality present in all beings.
Ananya Bhakti finally teaches that love must become trust. When difficulties come, the devotee does not immediately feel abandoned. Instead, faith whispers, “God is with me, guiding me through this.” Such trust gives courage during pain, patience during delay, and humility during success.
Prayer, namasmarana, bhajan, meditation, and seva help this devotion grow stronger. Prayer softens the heart, the divine name purifies the mind, bhajan fills life with sweetness, meditation brings inner silence, and service removes selfishness. These practices turn scattered love into steady devotion.
A devotee on this path should watch the mind carefully. Jealousy, pride, anger, greed, and attachment weaken devotion. They create distance between the heart and God. Through self-examination and sincere effort, these impurities can be reduced. Every weakness conquered becomes an offering to the Divine.
The beauty of one-pointed devotion is that it makes life simple. The devotee may still face problems, but the heart is not completely shaken. There is a quiet confidence that God knows, God sees, and God protects. This faith does not remove all challenges, but it gives strength to face them with dignity.
Such devotion also brings sweetness into relationships. When we love God in all, we become more patient, forgiving, and compassionate. We stop treating people only according to our likes and dislikes. We begin to see every person as a child of the same Divine. This vision makes love broader and purer.
In the end, Ananya Bhakti is a sacred path of complete love, steady faith, and humble surrender to God. It asks the devotee to love without condition, serve without pride, pray without selfishness, and trust without fear. When the heart becomes one-pointed in divine remembrance, life becomes peaceful, purposeful, and blessed with grace.
