Rambles in Bhakti
by Swami Sivananda
TO TONGUE O Tongue! Recite, recite at all times, Om Namo Narayanaya; You will be blessed. Names of Lord Vishnu Put an end To the miseries of Samsara. Sing the Names of Hari, Sing His praise; You were leading all along A despicable life. You lived in vain. Do not abuse anybody, Do not utter falsehood. Do not speak foul words, Do not utter harsh words. Speak sweetly Do not backbite. Recite Ramayana, Recite Gita, Upanishads. Glorify others. Remember the Lord Who gave you power to speak. Do not misuse your power. Merge in the Lord, Be ever blissful. TO CUPID O Cupid! You are finished now, Get away from me, You cannot tempt me, You cannot excite me, Your power has gone now, You are impotent, Do you not know the power Of Lord Hari’s discus? Sage Durvasa had to fly, He had no strength, To face Vishnu’s discus. I am under his protection; His discus will burn you: You are already limbless Siva’s third eye burnt you once. Take to your heels quickly, Become wise. Thou art Avidya’s child; Go back to your mother. Viveka and Vairagya, Devotion and Name, Will reduce you to ashes. Show not thy face, Put down thy flowery arrows, Seek refuge under Hari’s feet. Salutations unto Thee. O Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, O Padmanabha of Triva
Rambles in Bhakti – Reflections on the Joy of Loving Devotion
Rambles in Bhakti is a beautiful expression of the soul’s heartfelt journey toward the Divine through love, faith, and complete surrender. Rather than following dry intellectual reasoning, this path encourages seekers to cultivate a living relationship with God through constant remembrance, prayer, chanting, and selfless service. Every sincere act performed with purity of heart becomes a sacred offering that gradually transforms the mind and fills life with inner peace. Swami Sivananda beautifully emphasized that divine love is the easiest and most natural way to attain spiritual fulfillment because it awakens the highest qualities already present within every individual.
The teachings found in Rambles in Bhakti remind aspirants that devotion is not confined to temples or places of pilgrimage. It blossoms in everyday life through kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. When every action is dedicated to the Supreme, ordinary duties become extraordinary opportunities for spiritual growth. The devotee learns to see the Divine presence in every living being, making love and service inseparable from true spiritual practice.
Faith grows stronger through regular prayer, repetition of the Divine Name, study of inspiring scriptures, and association with noble souls. These simple disciplines gradually remove negative tendencies such as anger, pride, jealousy, and selfishness. As the heart becomes purified, divine grace flows effortlessly, bringing contentment that no worldly achievement can provide. This timeless wisdom continues to inspire spiritual aspirants across generations and remains an important treasure shared through Devotional India for sincere seekers.
A true devotee does not seek miracles or material rewards but longs for constant remembrance of the Divine. Such unwavering love gives strength during difficulties and creates balance during times of success. The mind becomes peaceful because it is no longer disturbed by temporary pleasures or disappointments. This inner stability allows one to face life’s changing circumstances with courage, patience, and complete trust in God’s will.
Rambles in Bhakti also teaches that spiritual progress is measured not by external rituals alone but by the transformation of character. A gentle heart, truthful speech, forgiving nature, and readiness to help others are the real signs of devotion. As love expands, selfish desires gradually disappear, making room for wisdom, compassion, and universal brotherhood. Every sincere prayer deepens the connection between the individual soul and the eternal Reality.
The journey of devotion is open to everyone regardless of age, education, or background. The Divine responds to genuine love rather than outward qualifications. Even a few moments of sincere remembrance each day can slowly reshape one’s thoughts and actions, leading to lasting happiness and spiritual confidence. The inspiring guidance offered through Rambles in Bhakti continues to encourage seekers to cultivate unwavering faith, while Devotional India serves as a valuable source of timeless spiritual teachings that illuminate the path toward divine realization.
