vimōhitō’yaṃ jana īśa māyayā
tvadīyayā tvāṃ cha bhajatyanarthadṛk ।
sukhāya duḥkhaprabhavēṣu sajjatē
gṛhēṣu yōṣitpuruṣaścha vañchitaḥ ॥ 1 ॥

O Lord, this person is deluded by Your divine māyā. Not understanding the truth, he worships You while seeking worldly benefits and becomes attached to temporary sources of happiness and sorrow.

labdhvā janō durlabhamatra mānuṣaṃ
kathañchidavyaṅgamayatnatō’nagha ।
pādāravindaṃ na bhajatyasanmati-
rgṛhāndhakūpē patitō yathā paśuḥ ॥ 2 ॥

After attaining this rare human birth, a person who does not worship Your lotus feet falls into the dark well of worldly attachment, just like an ignorant animal.

mamaiṣa kālō’jita niṣphalō gatō
rājyaśriyōnnaddhamadasya bhūpatē ।
martyātmabuddhēḥ sutadārakōśabhū-
ṣvāsajjamānasya durantachintayā ॥ 3 ॥

O unconquerable Lord, my life has passed uselessly in pride and attachment to royal wealth, considering this mortal body, family, possessions and land as permanent.

kalēvarē’smin ghaṭakuḍyasannibhē
nirūḍhamānō naradēva ityaham ।
vṛtō rathēbhāśvapadātyanīkapairgāṃ
paryaṭaṃstvāgaṇayan sudurmadaḥ ॥ 4 ॥

Identifying myself with this fragile body made of flesh and bones, I became proud thinking myself a great king, surrounded by armies, horses and elephants, forgetting You.

pramattamuchchairiti kṛtyachintayā
prabhuddhalōbhaṃ viṣayēṣu lālasam ।
tvamapramattaḥ sahasā’bhipadyasē
kṣullēlihānō’hirivākhumantakaḥ ॥ 5 ॥

A person absorbed in duties, greed and sense pleasures remains careless, but You, O Lord, suddenly appear like a serpent destroying a helpless creature.

purā rathairhēmapariṣkṛtaiścharan
mataṅgajairvā naradēvasañjñitaḥ ।
sa ēva kālēna duratyayēna tē
kalēvarō viṭkṛmibhasmasañjñitaḥ ॥ 6 ॥

The same king who once traveled in golden chariots and majestic elephants eventually sees his body transformed into dust, worms and ashes by the unavoidable power of time.

nirjitya dikchakramabhūtavigrahō
varāsanasthaḥ samarājavanditaḥ ।
gṛhēṣu maithunyasukhēṣu yōṣitāṃ
krīḍāmṛga pūruṣa īśa nīyatē ॥ 7 ॥

Even one who conquers kingdoms, sits upon a throne and is honored by kings becomes controlled by attachment to worldly pleasures and becomes like a plaything of desires.

karōti karmāṇi tapaḥsu niṣṭhitō
nivṛttabhōgastadapēkṣayā dadat ।
punaścha bhūyēyamahaṃ svarāḍiti
prabuddhatarṣō na sukhāya kalpatē ॥ 8 ॥

A person performs austerities and sacrifices hoping for future enjoyment, but such desires do not lead to true happiness.

bhavāpavargō bhramatō yadā bhavē-
jjanasya tarhyachyuta satsamāgamaḥ ।
satsaṅgamō yarhi tadaiva sadgatau
parāvarēśē tvayi jāyatē matiḥ ॥ 9 ॥

When a person seeks freedom from worldly existence, by the mercy of the Lord he receives the association of saints, and his mind becomes fixed on You.

manyē mamānugraha īśa tē kṛtō
rājyānubandhāpagamō yadṛchChayā ।
yaḥ prārthyatē sādhubhirēkacharyayā
vanaṃ vivikṣadbhirakhaṇḍabhūmipaiḥ ॥ 10 ॥

O Lord, I consider the loss of my worldly attachments as Your blessing, because even great sages and kings desire such freedom.

na kāmayē’nyaṃ tava pādasēvanād-
akiñchanaprārthyatamādvaraṃ vibhō ।
ārādhya kastvāṃ hyapavargadaṃ harē
vṛṇīta āryō varamātmabandhanam ॥ 11 ॥

O Lord, I desire no other blessing except service to Your lotus feet, which is sought by those who have abandoned worldly possessions.

tasmādvisṛjyāśiṣa īśa sarvatō
rajastamaḥsattvaguṇānubandhanāḥ ।
nirañjanaṃ nirguṇamadvayaṃ paraṃ
tvāṃ jñaptimātraṃ puruṣaṃ vrajāmyaham ॥ 12 ॥

Therefore, abandoning all material desires connected with the three modes of nature, I surrender to You, the pure, eternal and supreme consciousness.

chiramiha vṛjinārtastapyamānō’nutāpaiḥ
avitṛṣaṣaḍamitrō labdhaśāntiḥ kathañchit ।
śaraṇada samupētastvatpadābjaṃ parātman
abhayamamṛtamaśōkaṃ pāhi mā’pannamīśa ॥ 13 ॥

O Supreme Lord, after suffering for a long time in this world, I have attained some peace and now seek refuge at Your lotus feet. Protect me with Your immortal, fearless and blissful grace.
