God is Immanent
by Swami Sivananda
As I have said already, God is an absentee landlord of this world. He is hiding Himself within these objects. He is remaining within these objects. He is the Indweller and inter-penetrating Presence or Essence or Substance, the intelligent and creative principle of the universe itself. This is a fundamental conception of pantheism. You will find in the Svetasvatara Upanishad:
“One shining Being sits hidden in every creature, pervading all, the Inner Self of all beings, the watcher of all acts, abiding in all created things, the witness, the heart, the absolute, free of all attributes. “
Just as oil is hidden in seed, butter in milk, mind in brain, foetus in the womb, sun behind the clouds, fire in wood, sugar or salt in water, scent in buds, sound in the gramophonic records, gold in quarts, microbes in blood, so also God is hidden in all these beings and forms. Just as you see the bacilli of cholera, typhoid fever, consumption or any other disease as for that matter through the powerful lens of microscope, so also you can see God through the eye of intuition (Jnana Chakshus).
The first Sloka of the Isavasya Upanishad begins with: “Isa-vasyam-idam sarvam-All these movable and immovable objects are indwelt by the Lord.” In the Katha Upanishad (I-iii-12) you will find: “Esha sarveshu bhuteshu gudho-atma. . . -This Atman is hidden in all beings. ” He who has a sharp, subtle, pure intellect can see Him.
God is full of mercy, love and compassion. He has been described as “Ocean of Mercy. ” His mercy flows like the streams of the Ganga and the Yamuna. He is depicted as having sold Himself to His devotees, so to say. He willingly suffers endless pain in the eyes of the world in order to alleviate the sufferings of His devotees. He bears the scar left on His chest by the kick of Bhrigu as an ornament. He wears the skulls of His devotees as a garland round His neck. He ran with lightning speed to save the modesty of Draupadi from being outraged.
He apologised and begged pardon of Prahlada in the following words:
“O dear, you were too tender of age and too delicate of body to stand the terrible tortures inflicted on your person by your hot-headed father. A parallel of his atrocious deed I have never seen. Pray, therefore excuse me if I was late in coming to your rescue. “
You are all aware of the dying Jatayu in the lap of Sri Rama, who caressed the bird which was mortally wounded in its heroic efforts to rescue Sita from the clutches of the demon king, Ravana. He wiped off the dust on its body with the trusses of His hair. Mark here the unique, tender affection of Sri Rama towards His devotees!
God becomes a slave of His devotees. Lord Krishna says: “I am not in My control. I am under the complete control of My Bhaktas. They have taken entire possession of My heart. How can I leave them when they have renounced everything for My sake only?”
Lord Rama carried the palanquin of His devotee, Sri Tyagaraja of Tiruvayur, the late reputed songster-Bhakta. He carried water in a vessel for His ablution. He is ever waiting for a chance to serve you in the same way. May His blessings be upon us all!
God is Immanent – Divine Presence, Inner Life, and Universal Reality
God is Immanent means that the Divine is not far away from creation, life, or the human heart. The sacred presence is not limited to a distant heaven, one temple, one scripture, or one special place. It exists within and through all beings, all nature, and all experiences. Every breath, every heartbeat, every ray of light, and every movement of life is supported by the same divine reality.
Many people think of the Divine as separate from the world, watching from far above. This view can inspire devotion, but it is incomplete if it makes us forget the nearness of the sacred. The higher vision teaches that the presence of the Divine is also within the world, within the soul, and within every moment of existence.
God is Immanent does not mean that every outer action is pure or that ignorance should be accepted as divine wisdom. It means that behind all names, forms, bodies, minds, and movements, there is one deeper reality supporting everything. Just as thread runs through a garland of flowers, the Divine presence runs through the universe.
This teaching gives a new way of seeing life. The sun, moon, rivers, mountains, trees, animals, and human beings are not separate from the sacred order. Nature becomes a living temple. Service becomes worship. Kindness becomes prayer. Every meeting with another person becomes an opportunity to honor the divine presence hidden in the heart.
God is Immanent also points toward the inner self. The body is seen, the mind is known, thoughts are observed, and emotions are experienced. But the awareness that knows all these is closer than anything else. This witnessing consciousness is the doorway to understanding the Divine within. When the mind becomes calm and pure, this inner presence is felt more clearly.
The feeling of separation arises because of ignorance and ego. A person thinks, “I am only this body,” “I am separate from others,” and “God is somewhere else.” From this false vision arise fear, loneliness, pride, hatred, and attachment. Spiritual wisdom removes this narrowness and reveals unity behind diversity.
God is Immanent teaches that worship should not remain limited to rituals alone. Rituals, prayers, and temples are valuable when they awaken devotion. But the same devotion should continue in daily conduct. Speak kindly, serve sincerely, respect others, protect nature, and act with truthfulness. If the Divine is present in all, then every action becomes spiritually important.
This vision brings humility. No one can claim ownership of life in an absolute sense. The power to think, breathe, act, love, serve, and understand is supported by a higher presence. Recognizing this makes the ego soft. Gratitude replaces arrogance, and surrender replaces false pride.
God is Immanent also deepens compassion. When we see others only as bodies, names, castes, positions, or personalities, division grows. When we recognize the same sacred life within all, kindness becomes natural. The poor, the sick, the stranger, the weak, the learned, and the simple all deserve respect because the same inner light shines in each.
Meditation helps the seeker experience this truth. Sit quietly and observe the breath, body, thoughts, and feelings. Behind all changing movements, notice the silent awareness that remains. This awareness is not created by thoughts; it illumines them. Resting in it brings peace and opens the heart to the presence of the Divine within.
This teaching also changes how one faces difficulty. Even pain, failure, and uncertainty can become occasions for surrender and growth. The Divine presence does not always remove every challenge, but it gives strength, guidance, patience, and inner support. Faith becomes deeper when one learns to see grace even in struggle.
God is Immanent is a call to live with sacred awareness. Do not search only outside while ignoring the inner temple. Do not worship in one place and behave harshly in another. Let prayer become kindness, let knowledge become humility, and let devotion become service. This is practical spirituality.
A seeker who understands this truth becomes more balanced. They do not run away from the world in disgust, nor do they become lost in attachment. They see the world as a field for worship, service, discipline, and realization. Every duty becomes meaningful when performed with awareness of the Divine.
In the end, God is Immanent reveals that the sacred presence is within life, within nature, within the heart, and within all beings. Through purity, devotion, meditation, selfless service, humility, and right understanding, the seeker begins to feel this nearness. This realization brings peace, compassion, reverence, and a deeper sense of unity with all existence.
