हम प्रतिदिन उन दिव्य मंद मुस्कान की ज्योति को अंजलि अर्पित करते हैं, जो जीवों के बंधनों को काटने वाली है, कामदेव के रहस्यपूर्ण ज्ञान की मूल गुरु है और समस्त कल्याणमयी लीलाओं का आधार है। कामदेव के शत्रु भगवान शिव के नेत्रों की यह ज्योति मंदार-पुष्पों की आभा के गर्व को भी हर लेती है।

We offer our folded hands every day to the radiant gentle smile of Goddess Kāmākṣī, which cuts the bonds of embodied beings, is the primordial teacher of the science of Cupid, and is the abode of auspicious divine play. Its brilliance surpasses even the splendor of clusters of celestial Mandāra flowers and captivates the eyes of Śiva, the enemy of Cupid.

sadhrīchē navamallikāsumanasāṃ nāsāgramuktāmaṇē-
rāchāryāya mṛṇālakāṇḍamahasāṃ naisargikāya dviṣē ।
svardhunyā saha yudhvēna himaruchērardhāsanādhyāsinē

उस अद्वितीय श्वेतिमा को प्रणाम है जो कामाक्षी की मुस्कान की मंजरी में दिखाई देती है। वह नवीन मल्लिका-पुष्पों की श्वेतता, नासिका के मोती की चमक, कमल-डंठल की उज्ज्वलता, स्वर्गगंगा और चन्द्रमा की आभा से भी श्रेष्ठ है। वह अर्धासन पर विराजमान भगवान शिव के लिए भी अद्भुत आकर्षण का कारण है।

English Meaning:
Salutations to the incomparable whiteness of Kāmākṣī’s smile-cluster. It surpasses the purity of fresh jasmine blossoms, the pearl at Her nose, the radiance of lotus stalks, the celestial Gaṅgā, and the moon. It shines with unique brilliance before Śiva, who occupies the half-seat.

कामाक्षी की कोमल मुस्कान की किरणों की लहर मुझे प्राप्त हो। उसकी आभा कपूर की चमक को भी तुच्छ कर देती है, चन्द्रमा की किरणों के गर्व को नष्ट कर देती है और खिले हुए सुंदर मल्लिका-पुष्पों को भी उसके सामने छोटा बना देती है। वह कामदेव की जननी की दिव्य कृपा का स्वरूप है।

English Meaning:
May the wave of Kāmākṣī’s gentle smile bless me. Its radiance makes even the brilliance of camphor seem small, diminishes the splendor of moonlight, and makes fully blossomed jasmine flowers appear insignificant. It is the divine smile of the Mother who gives rise to Cupid.

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान की प्रचुरता मेरे हृदय को शीतल करे। वह उन्नत स्तनों पर लगे कपूर के लेप के समान चमकती है, आपके नीले नेत्रों की रात्रि में चन्द्रकिरणों के अंकुर के समान फैलती है और सौंदर्य की नदी की लहरों में चंचल हंस के समान शोभायमान होती है।

English Meaning:
May the abundance of Kāmākṣī’s smile cool my heart. It shines like a layer of camphor upon Her full breasts, grows like moonlight in the night of Her blue eyes, and moves like a playful swan upon the waves of the river of beauty.

yēṣāṃ santatamārurukṣati tulākakṣyāṃ śarachchandramāḥ ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान की किरणों के वे अंकुर मेरी ममता को दूर करें। उनकी श्वेतिमा चन्द्रप्रकाश को भी पीछे छोड़ देती है, शरद् ऋतु का चन्द्रमा भी जिसकी बराबरी करने का निरंतर प्रयास करता है और शंख भी जिसकी निर्मलता की तुलना पाने में असमर्थ है।

May the sprouts of Kāmākṣī’s smiling radiance remove my sense of possessiveness. Their whiteness surpasses moonlight, while even the autumn moon continually strives to equal them, and even the conch finds their purity difficult to match.

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मंद मुस्कान की ज्योति की लहर सभी दिशाओं में चन्द्रमा की शीतल व्याख्या करती हुई फैलती है और काश-पुष्पों की श्वेतता के गर्व को भी तोड़ देती है। भगवान ईशान इसे प्रेमपूर्वक देखते हैं। यह ज्योति पाप और दुःख का नाश करने वाली है।

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī! The wave of Your gentle smile spreads in all directions like an expression of moonlight and skillfully humbles the pride of the whiteness of Kāśa flowers. Śiva beholds it with delight. This radiant smile removes sin and suffering.

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मंद मुस्कान की मंजरी हमारे लिए मंगलमयी हो। वह कामदेव के उस साम्राज्य-सिंहासन पर विराजमान है जो आपके उन्नत स्तनों के रूप में दिखाई देता है और तीनों लोकों में उसके प्रभाव की घोषणा करता है। उसकी चंचल किरणें मानो उस सिंहासन पर चामर डुलाती हैं।

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī! May the cluster of Your gentle smile bless us. It appears seated upon the imperial throne of Cupid, represented by Your lofty bosom, the symbol of his sovereignty throughout the three worlds. Its moving rays seem to serve that throne like royal chowries.

gairvāṇīva taraṅgiṇī kṛtamṛdusyandāṃ kalindātmajām ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान की कोमल कली हमारे लिए कल्याण प्रदान करने वाली हो। भगवान शम्भु के आलिंगन के समय यह निर्मलता की पराकाष्ठा बन जाती है और गंगा तथा यमुना जैसी पवित्र नदियों को भी पीछे छोड़ देती है। यह उनके कंठ पर स्थित चन्द्रमा की निर्मल शोभा को भी अपनी आभा से ढक देती है।

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी सुंदर मुस्कान की मंजरी मेरे संसार-भय को नष्ट करे। वह आपके वक्षस्थल को मोतियों की माला की तरह सुशोभित करती है, करुणा की धारा में डूबी हुई निर्मलता को दुगुना करती है और भगवान हर को प्रेम से व्याकुल करके उन्हें आश्चर्यचकित कर देती है।

O Kāmākṣī! May Your lovely cluster of smiles destroy my fear of worldly existence. It adorns Your bosom like a pearl necklace, becomes immersed in the stream of compassion and doubles its purity, while filling Lord Hara with loving wonder.

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान श्वेत होते हुए भी चन्द्रमा की किरणों को फीका कर देती है। स्वयं शीतल होते हुए भी पशुपति शिव के हृदय में कामाग्नि को प्रज्वलित करती है। अधरों के निकट स्थित होते हुए भी आपके सामने झुकने वालों को ऊँची आध्यात्मिक गति प्रदान करती है। ऐसी आपकी मंदहास-ज्योति हमारे अंतःकरण में प्रकट हो।

O Kāmākṣī! Though white, Your smile makes the moonbeams appear dull. Though cool, it continually kindles the fire of love in Paśupati Śiva. Though naturally resting near the lips, it grants the highest spiritual path to those who bow before You. May that gentle-smile radiance shine clearly within us.

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī! In the beautiful lake of Your face, the eyebrow-creepers move playfully, while the dark radiance born of Your glance resembles a swarm of bees. Your smile displays a beauty surpassing even a fully awake, spotless lotus. May its graceful charm uproot the weakness and timidity of my mind.

nityaṃ yāṃ niyamēna yā cha yatatē kartuṃ triṇētrōtsavam ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान की मंजरी भक्तों के जड़ता रूपी समुद्र को सुखा देती है, कुमुदों के लिए भी प्रतिस्पर्धी बन जाती है और त्रिनेत्रधारी शिव के लिए प्रतिदिन उत्सव का कारण बनती है। वह अपने गर्व से चन्द्रमा के बिंब को भी मात देती है। ऐसी मुस्कान को केवल चन्द्रिका कैसे कहा जा सकता है?

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī! Your smile-cluster dries up the ocean of dullness in devotees, competes even with the beauty of lilies, and continually creates a festival for the Three-eyed Lord. Proudly surpassing the lunar orb itself, how can such a smile merely be called moonlight?

āruḍhā rabhasātpuraḥ puraripōrāślēṣaṇōpakramē
yā tē mātarupaiti divyataṭinīśaṅkākarī tatkṣaṇam ।

हे एकाम्रनाथ की प्रिय देवी! जब आप भगवान पुरारि शिव के आलिंगन के लिए आगे बढ़ती हैं, तब आपकी मुस्कान की प्रचुरता ऐसी दिव्य गंगा के समान प्रतीत होती है कि वह शिव के अधरों को कंपित, भौंहों को वक्र और मुख को लज्जा से झुका देती है। उस कोमल मुस्कान की शोभा को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपके मुखरूपी चन्द्रमा से निकलने वाली मुस्कान की चन्द्रिका सज्जनों के लिए अत्यंत मनोहर है। चकोर के समान मन रखने वालों के लिए यह कौतूहल का विषय है कि यह दिन-रात निरंतर बढ़ती हुई लाल अधरों की मणि-जैसी आभा में भी अपनी सुंदरता को और अधिक बढ़ाती रहती है।

O Kāmākṣī! The moonlight of Your smile, shining beautifully from the moon of Your face, delights noble hearts. It is a source of wonder to those whose minds are like chakora birds, for day and night it continually enters and enhances the radiance of Your ruby-like lips.

śōbhāmōṣṭharuchāmba vidrumabhavāmētādbhidāṃ brūmahē ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मंद मुस्कान समुद्र से निकले अमृतकलश के समान प्रतीत होती है। अधरों की मूंगे जैसी लालिमा उससे भिन्न है। प्राचीन पुरुष भगवान शर्व ने कभी एक ही स्रोत से निकले अमृत का पान किया था, परंतु अब वे आपकी मुस्कान के मध्य से उत्पन्न इस मधुर रस का आनंद लेते हैं।

O Kāmākṣī! Your gentle smile resembles the nectar-bearing vessel that arose from the cosmic ocean, while the coral-like beauty of Your lips gives it a unique distinction. The ancient Lord Śarva once drank nectar from the cosmic source; now He savors the sweetness arising from the midst of Your smile.

O Kāmākṣī! Your tender, moving smile-rays shine around the lofty mountain-like breasts adorned with fragrant musk designs. Colored by the deep radiance of Your lips, they resemble pure autumn clouds repeatedly illuminated by the rays of twilight.

हे माता कामाक्षी! दूध तो बहुत दूर की बात है; केवल निर्मलता के कारण भी वह आपकी मनोहर मंद मुस्कान के साथ तुलना नहीं कर सकता। फिर भी दोनों में अंतर यह है कि गाय से दूध दुहना पड़ता है, जबकि आपकी मुस्कान स्वयं झुकने वाले भक्तों की इच्छानुसार अमृतमय फल प्रदान करती है।

O Mother Kāmākṣī! Let milk remain far away; merely by its purity it cannot compare with Your lovely gentle smile. Yet there is a difference: milk must be drawn from the cow, whereas Your smile freely grants what devotees themselves seek when they bow before You.

If it were truly nectar, the Mandāra flower could not endure even a slight comparison with it; the Gaṅgā would seem churned before it, the moon would appear inferior, and even the cosmic ocean would become jealous of it.

āśaṅkē tava mandahāsalaharīmanyādṛśīṃ chandrikā-
mēkāmrēśakuṭumbini pratipadaṃ yasyāḥ prabhāsaṅgamē ।

O Beloved of Ekāmreśvara! I feel that the wave of Your gentle smile is a unique moonlight. Whenever its radiance touches You, the lotus of Your bosom becomes tender and the lotus of Your face gradually blossoms fully.

O Kāmākṣī! The graceful play of Your smile repeatedly falls upon the tender shoots of Your lip-radiance and reveals rows of flames like the arrows of Cupid. It surpasses the moonlike coolness of camphor, pearls, and lotus stalks, and transforms even the condition of those suffering from separation.

sūryālōkavidhau vikāsamadhikaṃ yāntī harantī tama-
ssandōhaṃ namatāṃ nijasmaraṇatō dōṣākaradvēṣiṇī ।

English Meaning:
O Daughter of Menā, O Bud of the Jewel-Lamp of Kāñchīpuram! We consider especially blessed those families of chakora birds that roam along the banks of the Kampā and continually taste the moonlike radiance of Your smile with their beaks.

O Kāmākṣī! The radiance of Your smile, though inherently cooling, removes the dullness of those who bow to You. Though supremely pure, it fills Girīśa with love, and though accompanied by playful conversation, it delights even those devoted to silence. How can its glory ever be adequately described?

śrōṇīchañchalamēkhalāmukharitaṃ līlāgataṃ mantharaṃ
bhrūvallīchalanaṃ kaṭākṣavalanaṃ mandākṣavīkṣāchaṇam ।
yadvaidagdhyamukhēna manmatharipuṃ sammōhayantyañjasā
śrīkāmākṣi tava smitāya satataṃ tasmai namsakurmahē ॥70॥

O Śrī Kāmākṣī! We continually bow to the clever play of Your smile, accompanied by the movement of Your charming waist and tinkling girdle, Your graceful gait, the movement of Your eyebrow-creepers, and Your sidelong glances, through which You effortlessly enchant Śiva, the enemy of Cupid.

O Kāmākṣī! What does moonlight accomplish merely by calming heat? The radiant light of Your gentle smile does far more. It removes suffering, awakens fresh vitality, completes beauty in the world, and spreads Your glory everywhere.

vaimalyaṃ kumudaśriyāṃ himaruchaḥ kāntyaiva sandhukṣyatē
jyōtsnārōchirapi pradōṣasamayaṃ prāpyaiva sampadyatē ।
svachChatvaṃ navamauktikasya paramaṃ saṃskāratō dṛśyatē
kāmākṣyāḥ smitadīdhitērviśadimā naisargikō bhāsatē ॥73॥

O Kāmākṣī! The purity of the water-lily is enhanced by moonlight, moonlight becomes especially manifest at dusk, and the supreme clarity of a new pearl appears through refinement. But the brilliance and purity of Your smile-rays shine naturally, without any external aid.

हे श्रीकामाक्षी! आपकी मुस्कान की ज्योति आपके उन्नत वक्षस्थल पर स्थित सौंदर्य की लीला-भूमि के ऊपरी भाग में बार-बार प्रकाशित होती है। बिंबफल जैसे अधरों की लालिमा के अंकुरों के साथ मिलकर वह मानो मूंगे से सुसज्जित मोतियों का अद्भुत मंडप बना देती है।

O Śrī Kāmākṣī! Your smile-radiance repeatedly shines upon the upper realm of the stage of beauty formed by Your lofty bosom. Joined with the sprouts of the red brilliance of Your bimba-like lips, it creates a wondrous pearl canopy adorned with coral-like beauty.

svābhāvyāttava vaktramēva lalitaṃ santōṣasampādanaṃ
śambhōḥ kiṃ punarañchitasmitaruchaḥ pāṇḍityapātrīkṛtam ।
ambhōjaṃ svata ēva sarvajagatāṃ chakṣuḥpriyambhāvukaṃ
kāmākṣi sphuritē śaradvikasitē kīdṛgvidhaṃ bhrājatē ॥88॥

हे कामाक्षी! आपका मुख स्वभाव से ही मनोहर और संतोष देने वाला है। फिर जब उसमें मंद मुस्कान की आभा जुड़ जाती है, तब उसकी विद्वत्ता और सौंदर्य का क्या कहना! शरद् ऋतु में स्वयं खिलने वाला कमल भी आपके सामने कैसी शोभा धारण करेगा, यह कल्पना से परे है।

O Kāmākṣī! Your face is naturally charming and capable of giving joy. What then can be said when it is enriched by the radiance of Your gentle smile? Even a lotus, naturally beloved by the eyes of the whole world and blooming in autumn, cannot compare with its splendor.

O Śrī Kāmākṣī! Your smile is like a powerful mantra. It attracts the eyes of the celestial beings, stills even the moon’s coolness, enchants Paśupati Śiva, and drives away the suffering of the world. O Śivā, may that same smile work to destroy the darkness of my mind.

kṣēpīyaḥ kṣapayantu kalmaṣabhayānyasmākamalpasmita-

हे शिवे, हे कामाक्षी! आपकी मंद मुस्कान के प्रकाशमंडल में विचरण करने वाली उज्ज्वल किरणें हमारे पाप और उनसे उत्पन्न भय को शीघ्र नष्ट करें। वे पीड़ादायक कर्मों की तपन और संसाररूपी गर्मी से जलते हुए हमें नवीन आनंद की अमृतधारा के शीतल बिंदुओं से सींचें।

English Meaning:
O Śivā, O Kāmākṣī! May the radiant rays moving through the luminous sphere of Your gentle smile quickly destroy our sins and the fears arising from them. May they sprinkle us with cool drops from the stream of nectar that rains fresh joy upon those scorched by painful karma and worldly heat.

English Meaning:
O Śrī Kāmākṣī! Within the fullness of the moonlike radiance of Your smile, the spiritual brilliance of devotees blossoms greatly. It gains the depth and vastness of the ocean and removes the layers of darkness and poverty, producing the supreme beauty associated with moonlight and blooming lilies.

mandārādiṣu manmathārimahiṣi prākāśyarītiṃ nijāṃ
kādāchitkatayā viśaṅkya bahuśō vaiśadyamudrāguṇaḥ ।
sātatyēna tava smitē vitanutē svairāsanāvāsanām ॥93॥

हे कामदेव के शत्रु की महिषी, कामाक्षी! मंदार आदि पुष्प कभी-कभी आपकी मुस्कान की थोड़ी-सी चमक से अपनी ही शोभा पर संदेह करने लगते हैं। आपकी मुस्कान की निर्मलता और उज्ज्वलता निरंतर ऐसी श्रेष्ठता प्रकट करती है कि अन्य सभी सुंदर वस्तुएँ उसके सामने अपनी स्थिति खो देती हैं।

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī, Consort of the enemy of Cupid! The Mandāra flowers and other radiant objects occasionally doubt their own brilliance when compared with Your smile. The clarity and purity of Your smile continually establish such supremacy that all other beauties become secondary before it.

O Mother Śrī Kāmākṣī! The fire of worldly existence is blazing, intensified by the fierce wind of accumulated karma, and I have fallen into it, tormented by suffering and anxiety. Sprinkle me with a few pure drops of the nectar-like rays of Your gentle smile, which playfully bestow cooling relief.

O Daughter of Menā, Śrī Kāmākṣī! The graceful radiance of Your smile is like a cool river of nectar. It plays upon the tongue of speech, accompanies the mood of divine love, and delights in sacred play. May it triumph as a stream in which I may joyfully bathe in purity.

English Meaning:
O Kāmākṣī! May my consciousness, immersed in the waves of the nectar-river of Your sweet smile, dissolve all suffering. Within those waves the moon of love is clearly reflected, continually awakening wonder in the heart of Dhūrjaṭi Śiva.

O Mother Kāmākṣī! The nectar of Your gentle smile arises as though from the churning of the ocean of my heart by the mountain of love. The three-eyed gaze of Śiva repeatedly tastes that nectar and becomes filled with waves of bliss.

prēṅkhanmārutaghaṭṭanaprachalitādānandadugdhāmbudhēḥ ।

हे कामाक्षी! आपके दर्शन से पाँच बाणों वाले कामदेव के शत्रु भगवान शिव के हृदय में आनंद का क्षीरसागर आंदोलित हो उठता है। उस आनंद-सागर से चेतना के नए अंकुर के रूप में एक नई लहर उठती है। कवि-श्रेष्ठ उसे आपकी मुस्कान कहते हैं।

O Kāmākṣī! At the sight of You, the ocean of bliss within Śiva, the enemy of the five-arrowed Cupid, is stirred by the moving breeze of wonder. From that ocean arises a fresh wave in the form of a new sprout of consciousness. The great poets ever describe that wave as Your smile.

sūktiḥ śīlayatē kimadritanayē mandasmitāttē muhuḥ
mādhuryāgamasampradāyamathavā sūktērnu mandasmitam ।

हे पर्वतकन्या! मेरा मन बार-बार इस विचार में पड़ता है कि क्या सुंदर वाणी आपकी मंद मुस्कान से मधुरता सीखती है, या आपकी मंद मुस्कान स्वयं सुंदर वाणी से मधुरता ग्रहण करती है। इस प्रकार मेरा मन संदेह के मार्ग में भटकता रहता है और परम सत्य की अनुभूति के मार्ग पर स्थिर नहीं हो पाता।

English Meaning:
O Daughter of the Mountain! My mind repeatedly wonders whether noble speech learns its sweetness from Your gentle smile, or whether Your gentle smile itself learns sweetness from noble speech. Thus my mind wanders along the path of doubt and fails to settle upon the direct experience of ultimate truth.

O Śivā, Śrī Kāmākṣī! Salutations to the charming rays of Your gentle smile. They are like palaces of playful compassion, like the source-houses of the nectar-stream of poets’ speech, and like imperial thrones upon which the sprouts of liberation arise.

जो साधक अपने मन में देवी की आर्या-स्वरूप स्तुति का ध्यान करते हुए उनके चरणकमलों को अपने सामने देखता है और उनकी स्तुति आरंभ करता है, वह निश्चित रूप से कामाक्षी की कृपादृष्टि प्राप्त करता है। उनकी कोमल मुस्कान की चन्द्रिका की सहचरी उस कृपादृष्टि को प्राप्त करके वह मोक्षरूपी महल की आनंदमयी ऊँची छत पर आरोहण करता है।

English Meaning:
One who contemplates the noble Goddess within the mind, beholds Her lotus feet before him, and begins this hymn is surely blessed with the radiance of Kāmākṣī’s compassionate glance. Accompanied by the moonlight-like waves of Her gentle smile, that grace leads the devotee upward to the blissful terrace of the palace of liberation.
