Kanjanur Temple – Venus (Shukra)

The temple is called Agniswarar Temple, at Kanjanur village, Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in the form Agniswarar (also called Agneeswara), and the Goddess is Karpagambal. Though Sukra is the planetary focus, there is no separate idol for Sukra – Sukra is believed to be embodied in the stomach of the Shiva deity.

It is one of the Navagraha Temples of Tamil Nadu, associated with Sukra (Venus).

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built during the Medieval Cholas and later renovated by rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Legends say that Agni Bhagavan (the Fire God) worshipped Lord Shiva here, which gives the temple the name “Agniswarar.”
Another story: Sage Parashara Muni was blessed here to witness Shiva’s cosmic dance (Mukti Thandavam) and the place is believed to have sacred associations with Brahma (vision of Shiva’s marriage to Parvati) etc
