Nitya Sandhya Vandanam (Krishna Yajurvediya)

शरीर शुद्धि

अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा ।
यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः ॥
पुण्डरीकाक्ष ! पुण्डरीकाक्ष ! पुण्डरीकाक्षाय नमः ।

Whether pure or impure, or in whatever condition one may be, one who remembers the Lotus-Eyed Lord becomes purified both externally and internally. Salutations to the Lotus-Eyed Lord.

आचमनः

ॐ आचम्य ।
ॐ केशवाय स्वाहा ।
ॐ नारायणाय स्वाहा ।
ॐ माधवाय स्वाहा ।

After performing āchamana, the sacred names of Lord Viṣṇu are invoked.

ॐ गोविन्दाय नमः ।
ॐ विष्णवे नमः ।
ॐ मधुसूदनाय नमः ।
ॐ त्रिविक्रमाय नमः ।
ॐ वामनाय नमः ।
ॐ श्रीधराय नमः ।
ॐ हृषीकेशाय नमः ।
ॐ पद्मनाभाय नमः ।
ॐ दामोदराय नमः ।
ॐ सङ्कर्षणाय नमः ।
ॐ वासुदेवाय नमः ।
ॐ प्रद्युम्नाय नमः ।
ॐ अनिरुद्धाय नमः ।
ॐ पुरुषोत्तमाय नमः ।
ॐ अधोक्षजाय नमः ।
ॐ नरसिंहाय नमः ।
ॐ अच्युताय नमः ।
ॐ जनार्दनाय नमः ।
ॐ उपेन्द्राय नमः ।
ॐ हरये नमः ।
ॐ श्रीकृष्णाय नमः ।
ॐ श्रीकृष्ण परब्रह्मणे नमो नमः ॥

These sacred names of Lord Viṣṇu are recited with the prescribed acts of purification. By performing them in the stated manner, the limbs and the body are purified.

भूतोच्छाटन

उत्तिष्ठन्तु । भूत पिशाचाः । ये ते भूमिभारकाः ।
ये तेषामविरोधेन । ब्रह्मकर्म समारभे ।
ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवः ।

May the spirits and unseen beings depart. May all obstacles caused by such beings be removed, so that the sacred Vedic act may be commenced without obstruction.

दैवी गायत्री छन्दः प्राणायामे विनियोगः ।

The Divine Gāyatrī metre is employed for the practice of prāṇāyāma.

प्राणायामः

ॐ भूः । ॐ भुवः । ॐ सुवः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ सत्यं ।
ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
ॐ आपो ज्योती रसोऽमृतं ब्रह्म भूर्भुवःसुवरोम् ॥

We meditate upon the divine radiance of Savitṛ, the supreme and most worthy light. May that divine brilliance inspire and illumine our intellect. The Waters, Light, Essence, Immortality and Brahman are invoked as the sacred reality pervading the three worlds.

सङ्कल्पः

ममोपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा,
श्री परमेश्वरमुद्दिश्य, श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थम्,
शुभाभ्यां शुभे शोभने अभ्युदय मुहूर्ते,
श्री महाविष्णो राज्ञया प्रवर्तमानस्य,
अद्य ब्रह्मणः द्वितीय परार्धे,
श्वेतवराह कल्पे, वैवस्वत मन्वन्तरे,
कलियुगे प्रथम पादे,
शोभन गृहे, समस्त देवता ब्राह्मण हरिहर गुरुचरण सन्निधौ,

For the removal of all accumulated sins and impurities, and for the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara, this sacred Sandhyā worship is undertaken at the prescribed auspicious time, according to the stated cosmic, calendrical, geographical and personal details.

मार्जनः

ॐ आपो हिष्ठा मयोभुवः ।
ता न ऊर्जे दधातन ।
महे रणाय चक्षसे ।
यो वः शिवतमो रसः ।
तस्य भाजयतेह नः ।
उशतीरिव मातरः ।
तस्मा अरं गमाम वः ।
यस्य क्षयाय जिन्वथ ।
आपो जनयथा च नः ॥

O Waters, you are the source of happiness and nourishment. Grant us strength and vitality. Give us that most auspicious essence of yours, like loving mothers. May we approach you for our welfare, and may you renew and purify us.

(इति शिरसि मार्जयेत्)
(हस्तेन जलं गृहीत्वा)

Thus, the water is sprinkled upon the head after taking water in the hand.

प्रातःकाल मन्त्राचमनः

सूर्यश्च मामन्युश्च मन्युपतयश्च मन्युकृतेभ्यः ।

May Sūrya, righteous anger, and the powers governing anger protect me from sins. Whatever wrong I may have committed during the night through thought, speech, hands, feet or bodily actions, may the night remove it. I offer all such impurities into the divine light of the Sun, the source of immortality.

मध्याह्नकाल मन्त्राचमनः

ममोपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा,
श्री परमेश्वरमुद्दिश्य, श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थम्,
शुभाभ्यां शुभे शोभने अभ्युदय मुहूर्ते,

आपः पुनन्तु पृथिवीं पृथिवी पूता पुनातु माम् ।
पुनन्तु ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्ब्रह्मा पूता पुनातु माम् ।
यदुच्छिष्टमभोज्यं यद्वा दुश्चरितं मम ।
सर्वं पुनन्तु मा मापोऽसतां च प्रतिग्रहं स्वाहा ॥

May the Waters purify the Earth, and may the purified Earth purify me. May Brahmaṇaspati and Brahman purify me. Whatever impure food I may have consumed or whatever improper conduct I may have performed, may the sacred Waters cleanse it all from me.

सायंकाल मन्त्राचमनः

अग्निश्च मा मन्युश्च मन्युपतयश्च मन्युकृतेभ्यः ।
पापेभ्यो रक्षन्ताम् । यदह्ना पापमकार्षम् ।
मनसा वाचा हस्ताभ्याम् । पद्भ्यामुदरेण शिञ्चा ।
अहस्तदवलुम्पतु । यत्किञ्च दुरितं मयि ।
इदमहमाममृतयोनौ सत्ये ज्योतिषि जुहोमि स्वाहा ॥

May Agni and the powers governing righteous restraint protect me from sins. Whatever wrong I have committed during the day through thought, speech, hands, feet or bodily actions, may it be removed. I offer all impurities into the divine light of Truth, the source of immortality.

(इति मन्त्रेण जलं पिबेत्)

Thus, water is to be sipped while reciting the mantra.

आचम्य — ॐ केशवाय स्वाहा … श्रीकृष्ण परब्रह्मणे नमो नमः ।

Perform āchamana by invoking the sacred names of Lord Viṣṇu and Lord Kṛṣṇa.

द्वितीय मार्जनः

दधिक्राव्णो अकारिषम् । जिष्णोरश्वस्य वाजिनः ।
सुरभिनो मुखाकरत्प्रण आयूंषि तारिषत् ॥

May the powerful and swift divine energy grant fragrance, vitality and strength to our life. May it lead us safely toward longevity and auspiciousness.

ॐ आपो हिष्ठा मयोभुवः । ता न ऊर्जे दधातन ।
महे रणाय चक्षसे । यो वः शिवतमो रसः ।
तस्य भाजयतेह नः । उशतीरिव मातरः ।
तस्मा अरं गमाम वः । यस्य क्षयाय जिन्वथ ।
आपो जनयथा च नः ॥

O Waters, source of joy and nourishment, grant us strength and divine vision. May your most auspicious essence purify and renew us like loving mothers.

पुनः मार्जनः

हिरण्यवर्णाः शुचयः पावकाः या सुजातः कश्यपो यास्विन्द्रः ।
अग्निं या गर्भं दधिरे विरूपाः स्ताना आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु ।
या सा राजा वरुणो याति मध्ये सत्यानृते अवपश्यञ्जनानाम् ।
मधुश्चुतः शुचयो याः पावकास्ताना आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु ।
यासां देवा दिवि कृण्वन्ति भक्षं या अन्तरिक्षे बहुधा भवन्ति ।
याः पृथिवीं पयसो न्दन्ति शुक्रास्ताना आपः शं स्योना भवन्तु ।
याः शिवेन मा चक्षुषा पश्यतापः शिवया तनुवोपस्पृशत त्वचं मे ।
सर्वाग्निं रप्सुषदो हुवे वो मयि वर्चो बलमोजो निधत्त ॥

May the radiant, pure and purifying Waters bring auspiciousness and peace. May the sacred Waters that exist in heaven, in the atmosphere and upon Earth purify and nourish me. May they touch me with auspiciousness, grant divine strength, brilliance, vitality and spiritual power.

अघमर्षण मन्त्रः — पापविमोचनम्

द्रुपदा दिव मुच्छतु । द्रुपदा दिवे न्मुमुचानः ।
स्विन्नः स्नात्वी मलादिवः ।
पूतं पवित्रेणेवाज्यं आपः शुन्धन्तु मैनसः ॥

May sin and impurity depart from me. As one becomes cleansed through sacred bathing, may the holy Waters remove all impurities of the body, mind and actions.

लघुसङ्कल्पः

पूर्वोक्त एवं गुण विशेषण विशिष्टायां
शुभतिथौ ममोपात्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री परमेश्वरमुद्दिश्य
श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं प्रातःसन्ध्याङ्ग यथाकालोचित अर्घ्यप्रदानं करिष्ये ॥

On this auspicious day and at the prescribed time, for the removal of accumulated impurities and for the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara, I shall perform the appropriate offering of arghya as part of the morning Sandhyā worship.

प्रातः कालार्घ्य मन्त्रः

ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवः ।
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

We meditate upon the supreme divine radiance of Savitṛ. May that divine light inspire and guide our intellect.

माध्याह्नार्घ्य मन्त्रः

ॐ हंसः शुचिषद् वसुरन्तरिक्षसद् होता वेदिषदतिथिर्दुरोणसत् ।
नृषद्वरसदृतसद्व्योमसदब्जा गोजा ऋतजा अद्रिजा ऋतं बृहत् ॥

The Divine One dwells in purity, in the atmosphere, upon the altar and in the hearts of beings. He is present in the cosmic order, in the waters, in the mountains and throughout the vastness of existence.

सायंकालार्घ्य मन्त्रः

ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवः ।
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

We meditate upon the divine and supreme radiance of Savitṛ. May that light illumine and inspire our intellect.

ॐ भूः । ॐ भुवः । ॐ सुवः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ सत्यं ।
ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
ॐ आपो ज्योती रसोऽमृतं ब्रह्म भूर्भुवःसुवरोम् ॥

The sacred realms are invoked, followed by meditation upon the divine radiance of Savitṛ. May that light guide our intellect. The Waters, Light, Essence, Immortality and Brahman are invoked as the all-pervading sacred reality.

(इत्यञ्जलित्रयं विसृजेत्)

Thus, three offerings of arghya are released with joined hands.

कालातिक्रमण प्रायश्चित्तम्

पूर्वोक्त एवं गुण विशेषण विशिष्टायां शुभतिथौ ममोपात्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा
श्री परमेश्वरमुद्दिश्य श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं
कालातिक्रम दोषपरिहारार्थं चतुर्थ अर्घ्यप्रदानं करिष्ये ॥

For the removal of the fault arising from performing Sandhyā after the prescribed time, and for the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara, I shall offer the fourth arghya as an act of expiation.

ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवः ।
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
ॐ भूः । ॐ भुवः । ॐ सुवः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ सत्यं ।
ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
ॐ आपो ज्योती रसोऽमृतं ब्रह्म भूर्भुवःसुवरोम् ॥

We invoke the sacred realms and meditate upon the divine radiance of Savitṛ. May that light inspire our intellect. May the sacred Waters, Light, Essence, Immortality and Brahman purify and uplift us.

(इति जलं विसृजेत्)

Thus, the water is released.

सजल प्रदक्षिणम्

ॐ उद्यन्तमस्तं यन्तमादित्यमभिध्यायन् कुर्वन् ब्राह्मणो विद्वान् सकलं भद्रमश्नुते ।
असावादित्यो ब्रह्मेति ॥
ब्रह्मैव सन् ब्रह्माप्येति य एवं वेद । असावादित्यो ब्रह्म ॥

The wise one who meditates upon the rising and setting Sun attains auspiciousness. The Sun is Brahman. One who knows this realizes Brahman itself.

(एवं अर्घ्यत्रयं दद्यात् कालातिक्रमणे पूर्ववत्)
(पश्चात् हस्तेन जलमादाय प्रदक्षिणं कुर्यात्)
(द्विराचम्य प्राणायामत्रयं कृत्वा)

The three arghyas are offered in the prescribed manner. Afterwards, taking water in the hand, one performs pradakṣiṇa and then performs āchamana and three rounds of prāṇāyāma.

सन्ध्याङ्ग तर्पणम्

प्रातःकाल तर्पणम्

मम उपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं प्रातःसन्ध्याङ्ग तर्पणं करिष्ये ।
सन्ध्यां तर्पयामि, गायत्रीं तर्पयामि, ब्राह्मीं तर्पयामि, निमृजीं तर्पयामि ॥

For the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara and for the removal of all accumulated impurities, I perform the morning Sandhyā tर्पण. I offer sacred water to Sandhyā, Gāyatrī, Brāhmī and Nimṛjī.

मध्याह्न तर्पणम्

सन्ध्यां तर्पयामि, सावित्रीं तर्पयामि, रौद्रीं तर्पयामि, निमृजीं तर्पयामि ॥

I offer sacred water to Sandhyā, Sāvitrī, Raudrī and Nimṛjī.

सायंकाल तर्पणम्

सन्ध्यां तर्पयामि, सरस्वतीं तर्पयामि, वैष्णवीं तर्पयामि, निमृजीं तर्पयामि ॥

I offer sacred water to Sandhyā, Sarasvatī, Vaiṣṇavī and Nimṛjī.

(पुनराचमनं कुर्यात्)

Perform āchamana again.

गायत्री आवाहन

ॐ इत्येकाक्षरं ब्रह्म । अग्निर्देवता ब्रह्म इत्यार्षम् ।
गायत्रं छन्दः परमात्मं स्वरूपम् । सायुज्यं विनियोगम् ॥

The single syllable Om is Brahman. Agni is the presiding deity. The Gāyatrī is the metre, and the Supreme Self is its essential nature. It is employed for union with the Divine.

आयातु वरदा देवी अक्षरं ब्रह्मसम्मितम् ।
गायत्रीं छन्दसां मातेदं ब्रह्म जुषस्व मे ।
यदह्नात्कुरुते पापं तदह्नात्प्रतिमुच्यते ।
यद्रात्रियात्कुरुते पापं तद्रात्रियात्प्रतिमुच्यते ।
सर्ववर्णे महादेवि सन्ध्याविद्ये सरस्वति ॥

May the boon-giving Divine Goddess Gāyatrī, who is united with the imperishable Brahman, come to me. O Mother of all metres, accept this sacred offering. May the sins committed during the day and night be released. O Mahādevī Sarasvatī, embodiment of Sandhyā wisdom, purify and bless me.

ओजोऽसि सहोऽसि बलमसि भ्राजोऽसि देवानां धाम नामासि विश्वमसि विश्वायुः सर्वमसि सर्वायु-रभिभूरोम् ।

You are strength, endurance, power, brilliance and the abode of the Devas. You are the all-pervading universe and the life within all beings.

गायत्रीमावाहयामि सावित्रीमावाहयामि सरस्वतीमावाहयामि
छन्दर्षीनावाहयामि श्रियमावाहयामि ।

I invoke Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, Sarasvatī, the seers of the metres, and Śrī.

गायत्र्या गायत्री छन्दो विश्वामित्र ऋषिः सविता देवता अग्निर्मुखं
ब्रह्मा शिरो विष्णुर्हृदयं रुद्रः शिखा पृथिवी योनिः ।

The Gāyatrī metre is associated with the sage Viśvāmitra and Savitṛ as the presiding deity. Agni is the mouth, Brahmā the head, Viṣṇu the heart, Rudra the crest, and Earth the source.

ॐ भूः । ॐ भुवः । ॐ सुवः । ॐ महः । ॐ जनः । ॐ तपः । ॐ सत्यं ।
ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।

गायत्री जपसङ्कल्पः

ममोपात्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा
श्री परमेश्वरमुद्दिश्य श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं
सन्ध्याङ्ग यथाशक्ति गायत्री महामन्त्र जपं करिष्ये ॥

On this auspicious day, for the removal of accumulated impurities and for the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara, I undertake the Gāyatrī Mahāmantra japa according to my ability as part of Sandhyā worship.

करन्यासः

ॐ तत्सवितुः ब्रह्मात्मने अङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां नमः ।
वरेण्यं विष्ण्वात्मने तर्जनीभ्यां नमः ।
भर्गो देवस्य रुद्रात्मने मध्यमाभ्यां नमः ।
धीमहि सत्यात्मने अनामिकाभ्यां नमः ।
धियो यो नः ज्ञानात्मने कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः ।
प्रचोदयात्सर्वात्मने करतलकरपृष्ठाभ्यां नमः ।

The sacred portions of the Gāyatrī mantra are assigned to the fingers and hands, invoking Brahman, Viṣṇu, Rudra, Truth, Knowledge and the Supreme Self.

अङ्गन्यासः

ॐ तत्सवितुः ब्रह्मात्मने हृदयाय नमः ।
वरेण्यं विष्ण्वात्मने शिरसे स्वाहा ।
भर्गो देवस्य रुद्रात्मने शिखायै वषट् ।
धीमहि सत्यात्मने कवचाय हुं ।
धियो यो नः ज्ञानात्मने नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् ।
प्रचोदयात्सर्वात्मने अस्त्राय फट् ।
ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवरोमिति दिग्बन्धः ।

The mantra is placed upon the heart, head, crown, protective armour, three eyes and as a divine weapon, establishing sacred protection in all directions.

ध्यानम्

मुक्ताविद्रुम हेमनील धवळच्छायैर्मुखैस्त्रीक्षणैः ।
युक्तामिन्दुनिबद्धरत्नमकुटां तत्त्वार्थवर्णात्मिकाम् ।
गायत्रीं वरदाभयाङ्कुश कशाश्शुभ्रं कपालाṅ्गदाम् ।
शङ्खं चक्र मधारविन्दयुगलं हस्तैर्वहन्तीं भजे ॥

I meditate upon Goddess Gāyatrī, radiant with the brilliance of pearls, coral, gold and sapphire, adorned with the moon and jeweled crown, embodying the highest truth and holding divine symbols in Her hands.

चतुर्विंशति मुद्रा प्रदर्शनम्

सुमुखं सम्पुटिञ्चैव विततं विस्तृतं तथा ।
द्विमुखं त्रिमुखञ्चैव चतुः पञ्चमुखं तथा ।
षण्मुखोऽथो मुखञ्चैव व्यापकाञ्जलिकं तथा ।
शकटं यमपाशञ्च ग्रथितं सम्मुखोन्मुखम् ।
प्रलम्बं मुष्टिकञ्चैव मत्स्यः कूर्मो वराहकम् ।
सिंहाक्रान्तं महाक्रान्तं मुद्गरं पल्लवं तथा ॥

These sacred mudrās are prescribed as symbolic gestures associated with Gāyatrī worship.

चतुर्विंशति मुद्रा वै गायत्र्यां सुप्रतिष्ठिताः ।
[इति मुद्रा न जानाति गायत्री निष्फला भवेत्] ॥

The twenty-four mudrās are traditionally established in the worship of Gāyatrī.

यो देवः सवितास्माकं धियो धर्मादिगोचराः ।
प्रेरयेत्तस्य यद्भर्गस्तद्वरेण्यमुपास्महे ॥

We worship the supreme radiance of Savitṛ, whose divine brilliance inspires our intellect toward Dharma and higher understanding.

गायत्री मन्त्रः

ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवः ॥ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

We meditate upon the adorable divine radiance of Savitṛ. May that supreme light inspire and guide our intellect.

तत्सत् ब्रह्मार्पणमस्तु ।

May this entire act be offered to Brahman.

जपावसानम्

मम उपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं
प्रातःसन्ध्याङ्ग गायत्री महामन्त्र जपावसानं करिष्ये ।

For the pleasure of Lord Parameśvara and for the removal of all accumulated impurities, I conclude the Gāyatrī Mahāmantra japa performed as part of morning Sandhyā.

करन्यासः

ॐ तत्सवितुः ब्रह्मात्मने अङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां नमः ।
वरेण्यं विष्ण्वात्मने तर्जनीभ्यां नमः ।
भर्गो देवस्य रुद्रात्मने मध्यमाभ्यां नमः ।
धीमहि सत्यात्मने अनामिकाभ्यां नमः ।
धियो यो नः ज्ञानात्मने कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः ।
प्रचोदयात्सर्वात्मने करतलकरपृष्ठाभ्यां नमः ।

The sacred portions of the Gāyatrī mantra are again assigned to the fingers and hands, invoking the Divine Self.

अङ्गन्यासः

ॐ तत्सवितुः ब्रह्मात्मने हृदयाय नमः ।
वरेण्यं विष्ण्वात्मने शिरसे स्वाहा ।
भर्गो देवस्य रुद्रात्मने शिखायै वषट् ।
धीमहि सत्यात्मने कवचाय हुं ।
धियो यो नः ज्ञानात्मने नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् ।
प्रचोदयात्सर्वात्मने अस्त्राय फट् ।
ॐ भूर्भुवःसुवरोमिति दिग्विमोकः ।

The mantra is placed upon the heart, head, crown, protective armour, three eyes and as a divine weapon, followed by release of the directional protection.

ध्यानम्

मुक्ताविद्रुम हेमनील धवळच्छायैर्मुखैस्त्रीक्षणैः ।
युक्तामिन्दुनिबद्धरत्नमकुटां तत्त्वार्थवर्णात्मिकाम् ।
गायत्रीं वरदाभयाङ्कुश कशाश्शुभ्रं कपालाṅ्गदाम् ।
शङ्खं चक्र मधारविन्दयुगलं हस्तैर्वहन्तीं भजे ॥

I meditate upon Goddess Gāyatrī, radiant and adorned with divine ornaments, holding sacred symbols and bestowing blessings and protection.

अष्टमुद्रा प्रदर्शनम्

सुरभिर्ज्ञान चक्रे च योनिः कूर्मोऽथ पङ्कजम् ।
लिङ्गं निर्वाण मुद्रा चेत्यष्ट मुद्राः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥

Surabhi, Jñāna, Cakra, Yoni, Kūrma, Paṅkaja, Liṅga and Nirvāṇa are described as the eight sacred mudrās.

यो देवः सवितास्माकं धियो धर्मादिगोचराः ।
प्रेरयेत्तस्य यद्भर्गस्तद्वरेण्यमुपास्महे ॥

We worship the supreme radiance of Savitṛ, whose divine light guides our intellect toward Dharma and higher knowledge.

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर् देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥

The Guru is Brahmā, the Guru is Viṣṇu, and the Guru is Lord Maheśvara. The Guru is verily the Supreme Brahman. Salutations to that revered Guru.

ॐ तत्सद्ब्रह्मार्पणमस्तु ।

May this sacred act be offered to Brahman.

प्रातःकाल सूर्योपस्थानम्

ॐ मित्रस्य चर्षणीधृत श्रवो देवस्य सानसिम ।
सत्यं चित्रश्रवस्तमम् ।
मित्रो जनान् यातयति प्रजानन् मित्रो दाधार पृथिवीमुत द्याम् ।
मित्रः कृष्टीरनिमिषाभि चष्टे सत्याय हव्यं घृतवद्विधेम ।
प्रसमित्र मर्त्यो अस्तु प्रयस्वान्यस्त आदित्य शिक्षति व्रतेन ।
न हन्यते न जीयते त्वोतो नैनं मंहो अश्नोत्यन्तितो न दूरात् ॥

We invoke Mitra, the divine sustainer who watches over all beings, supports Earth and Heaven, and leads people upon the path of truth and righteousness. May the mortal who follows the divine discipline remain protected from harm and sin.

मध्याह्न सूर्योपस्थानम्

ॐ आ सत्येन रजसा वर्तमानो निवेशयन्नमृतं मर्त्यञ्च ।
हिरण्ययेन सविता रथेनाऽदेवो याति भुवना विपश्यन् ॥

The divine Savitṛ moves through the golden chariot, observing and sustaining all worlds, guiding the immortal and mortal realms.

उद्वयन्तमसस्परि पश्यन्तो ज्योतिरुत्तरम् ।
देवं देवत्रा सूर्यं अगन्म ज्योतिरुत्तमम् ॥

Rising beyond darkness, we behold the supreme light. We approach the divine Sun, the highest and most radiant light.

उद्यत्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः ।
दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यं ॥

The rays carry the divine Sun, the all-knowing radiant one, for the vision of the whole world.

चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः ।
अप्रा द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च ॥

The radiant form of the divine Sun has arisen. He is the eye of Mitra, Varuṇa and Agni, and the Self of all that moves and remains throughout Heaven, Earth and the atmosphere.

तच्चक्षुर्देवहितं पुरस्ताच्छुक्रमुच्चरत् ।
पश्येम शरदः शतं जीवेम शरदः शतम् ।
नन्दाम शरदः शतं मोदाम शरदः शतम् ।
भवाम शरदः शतं शृणवाम शरदः शतम् ।
प्रब्रवाम शरदः शतमजीतास्याम शरदः शतं ज्योक् च सूर्यं दृशे ॥

May we behold the divine eye rising before us. May we live for a hundred autumns, rejoice for a hundred autumns, remain strong for a hundred autumns, hear for a hundred autumns, speak for a hundred autumns, and behold the Sun for a hundred years.

य उदगान्महतोऽर्णवाद्विभ्राजमानः सरिरस्य मध्यात् समा वृषभो लोहिताक्षः सूर्यः विपश्चिन् मनसा पुनातु ॥

May the radiant, red-eyed and all-knowing Sun, rising from the great cosmic expanse, purify us through His divine brilliance.

सायंकाल सूर्योपस्थानम्

ॐ इमं मे वरुण श्रुधी हवमद्या च मृडय । त्वामवस्युराचके ॥
तत्त्वा यामि ब्रह्मणा वन्दमानस्तदाशास्ते यजमानो हविर्भिः ।
अहेडमानो वरुणेह बोध्युरुशंसमान आयुः प्रमोषीः ॥

O Varuṇa, hear this prayer of mine and be gracious to me. I approach You with reverence. May I remain free from offence and may my life be protected.

यच्चिद्धि ते विशो यथा प्रदेव वरुणव्रतम् । मिनीमसि द्यवि द्यवि ।
यत्किञ्चेदं वरुण दैव्ये जनेऽभिद्रोहं मनुष्याश्चरामसि ।
अचित्ती यत्तव धर्मा युयोपिममानस्तस्मादेनसो देवरिरीषः ।
कितवासो यद्रिरिपुर्नदीवि यद्वाघा सत्यमुतयन्न विद्म ।
सर्वा ता विष्य शिधिरेव देवाऽथाते स्याम वरुण प्रियासः ॥

Whatever transgression we may have committed against the divine order, knowingly or unknowingly, through human actions, may Varuṇa forgive and purify us. May we be freed from all faults and remain dear to the Divine.

दिग्देवता नमस्कारः

ॐ नमः प्राच्यै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नमो दक्षिणायै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नमः प्रतीच्यै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नम उदिच्यै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नम ऊर्ध्वायै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नमोऽधरायै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ।
ॐ नमोऽवान्तरायै दिशे याश्च देवता एतस्यां प्रतिवसन्त्ये ताभ्यश्च नमः ॥

Salutations to the deities residing in the East, South, West, North, above, below and in the intermediate directions. May all directions and their presiding deities be honoured and protect us.

मुनि नमस्कारः

नमो गङ्गा यमुनयोर्मध्ये ये वसन्ति ते मे प्रसन्नात्मानश्चिरञ्जीवितं वर्धयन्ति ।
नमो गङ्गा यमुनयोर्मुनिभ्यश्च नमो नमो गङ्गा यमुनयोर्मुनिभ्यश्च नमः ॥

Salutations to the sages who dwell between the sacred rivers Gaṅgā and Yamunā. May their grace bless us with peace and longevity. Repeated salutations to these holy sages.

सन्ध्यादेवता नमस्कारः

सन्ध्यायै नमः । सावित्र्यै नमः । गायत्र्यै नमः ।
सरस्वत्यै नमः । सर्वाभ्यो देवताभ्यो नमः ।
देवेभ्यो नमः । ऋषिभ्यो नमः । मुनिभ्यो नमः ।
गुरुभ्यो नमः । पितृभ्यो नमः । कामोऽकार्षीर्नमो नमः ।
मन्युरकार्षीर्नमो नमः । पृथिव्यापस्तेजो वायुराकाशात् नमः ॥

Salutations to Sandhyā, Sāvitrī, Gāyatrī and Sarasvatī. Salutations to all deities, Devas, Ṛṣis, Munis, Gurus and ancestors. Salutations to the sacred principles of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ।
यां सदा सर्वभूतानि चराणि स्थावराणि च ।
सायं प्रातर्नमस्यन्ति सा मां सन्ध्याभिरक्षतु ॥

Salutations to Lord Vāsudeva. May that sacred Sandhyā, which all moving and unmoving beings worship morning and evening, protect me.

शिवाय विष्णुरूपाय शिवरूपाय विष्णवे ।
शिवस्य हृदयं विष्णुर्विष्णोश्च हृदयं शिवः ॥
यथा शिवमयो विष्णुरेवं विष्णुमयः शिवः ।
यथाऽन्तरं न पश्यामि तथा मे स्वस्तिरायुषि ॥

Salutations to Śiva who is of the form of Viṣṇu and to Viṣṇu who is of the form of Śiva. Viṣṇu is the heart of Śiva, and Śiva is the heart of Viṣṇu. May I perceive no separation between Them, and may this unity bring auspiciousness and long life.

नमो ब्रह्मण्य देवाय गोब्राह्मण हिताय च ।
जगद्धिताय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः ॥

Salutations to the Divine Lord who protects Dharma, cows and the Brāhmaṇas, and who works for the welfare of the entire world. Salutations to Kṛṣṇa and Govinda.

गायत्री उद्वासनम् — प्रस्थानम्

उत्तमे शिखरे जाते भूम्यां पर्वतमूर्धनि ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽभ्यनुज्ञाता गच्छ देवि यथासुखम् ।
स्तुतो मया वरदा वेदमाता प्रचोदयन्ती पवने द्विजाता ।
आयुः पृथिव्यां द्रविणं ब्रह्मवर्चसं मह्यं दत्त्वा प्रजातुं ब्रह्मलोकम् ॥

O Divine Goddess, born upon the highest peak of the sacred mountain, with the permission of the Brāhmaṇas, depart happily. O Mother of the Vedas, praised by me, grant me longevity, prosperity, spiritual brilliance and the strength to progress toward the realm of Brahman.

भगवन्नमस्कारः

नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्रमूर्तये सहस्रपादाक्षि शिरोरुबाहवे ।
सहस्रनाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते सहस्रकोटि युगधारिणे नमः ॥

Salutations to the Infinite Lord who has a thousand forms, countless feet, eyes, heads and arms, who bears countless names, who is the eternal Supreme Person and sustains countless ages.

भूम्याकाशाभिवन्दनम्

इदं द्यावा पृथिवी सत्यमस्तु । पितर्मातर्यदि होप ब्रुवेवाम् ।
भूतं देवानामवमे अवोभिः । विद्या मेषं वृजिनं जीरदानुम् ॥

May Heaven and Earth establish truth and auspiciousness. May the Divine protect us and grant us wisdom, strength and freedom from harmful influences.

आकाशात्पतितं तोयं यथा गच्छति सागरम् ।
सर्वदेव नमस्कारः केशवं प्रतिगच्छति ॥

Just as water falling from the sky ultimately reaches the ocean, salutations offered to all the Devas ultimately reach Lord Keśava.

श्री केशवं प्रतिगच्छत्योन्नम इति ।

Thus, the offering of salutations reaches Śrī Keśava.

समापन प्रार्थनाएँ

सर्ववेदेषु यत्पुण्यं । सर्वतीर्थेषु यत्फलम् ।
तत्फलं पुरुष आप्नोति स्तुत्वा देवं जनार्दनम् ॥

Whatever merit is gained from all the Vedas and whatever fruit is obtained from all sacred pilgrimages, that fruit is attained by praising Lord Janārdana.

स्तुत्वा देवं जनार्दन ॐ नम इति ॥

Salutations to Lord Janārdana, the One who is praised by devotees.

वासना द्वासुदेवस्य वासितं ते जगत्रयम् ।
सर्वभूत निवासोऽसि श्रीवासुदेव नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

The three worlds are pervaded by the presence of Vāsudeva. You dwell within all beings. O Śrī Vāsudeva, salutations unto You.

श्री वासुदेव नमोऽस्तुते ॐ नम इति ।

Salutations to Śrī Vāsudeva.

अभिवादः — प्रवरा

चतुःसागर पर्यन्तं गो ब्राह्मणेभ्यः शुभं भवतु ।
… प्रवरान्वित … गोत्रः … सूत्रः … शाखाध्यायी … अहं भो अभिवादये ॥

May auspiciousness prevail throughout the entire world extending to the four oceans. I respectfully introduce myself according to my lineage, pravara, gotra, sūtra and Vedic branch.

आचम्य

Perform āchamana according to the prescribed procedure.

ईश्वरार्पणम्

कायेन वाचा मनसेन्द्रियैर्वा बुद्ध्यात्मना वा प्रकृतेः स्वभावात् ।
करोमि यद्यत्सकलं परस्मै श्रीमन्नारायणायेति समर्पयामि ॥

Whatever I perform through my body, speech, mind, senses, intellect, inner self or according to my natural tendencies, I offer it all to the Supreme Lord Śrīmannārāyaṇa.

हरिः ॐ तत्सत् ।

Hariḥ Om. That is Truth, the Supreme Reality.

तत्सर्वं श्रीपरमेश्वरार्पणमस्तु ॥

May everything be offered unto Śrī Parameśvara.
