Lord Hanuman’s Childhood
Lord Hanuman’s childhood is filled with divine miracles, playful adventures, and extraordinary displays of power. Soon after His birth, Mata Anjana was freed from the curse that had brought her to Earth. Before returning to her heavenly abode, she lovingly blessed her son and assured Him that He was destined for a great purpose. She also told Him that the bright, ripe fruits of nature would always provide His nourishment. Being an innocent and curious child, Hanuman mistook the glowing rising sun for a delicious fruit and joyfully leaped into the sky to catch it.
As Hanuman flew toward the sun with incredible speed, the gods were astonished by His immense strength. Fearing that the balance of the universe might be disturbed, Indra, the king of the gods, struck the young Hanuman with his mighty thunderbolt, known as the Vajra. The powerful blow caused Hanuman to fall from the heavens and injured His jaw, which is believed to be the origin of the name “Hanuman,” derived from the Sanskrit word Hanu , meaning “jaw.”
Seeing the child injured, Vayu (Pavana) , the Wind God and Hanuman’s divine protector, was overcome with sorrow. He carried Hanuman to the netherworld, known as Patala , and in His grief withdrew the life-giving air from the universe. As a result, every living being struggled to breathe, and the entire creation was thrown into distress. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lord Brahma and the other celestial gods approached Vayu to calm Him and restore balance to the world.
To appease Vayu and bless the divine child, the gods showered Hanuman with extraordinary boons. Lord Brahma granted Him protection from powerful celestial weapons, Lord Shiva blessed Him with unmatched courage and strength, Indra made Him immune to the effects of the thunderbolt, Agni ensured that fire could never harm Him, Varuna protected Him from water, and Yama granted Him freedom from untimely death. These divine blessings made Hanuman nearly invincible, immensely powerful, and one of the greatest heroes in Hindu tradition.
Although Hanuman possessed limitless strength from childhood, His innocence and playful nature often led Him into harmless mischief. To ensure that He used His powers wisely, great sages blessed Him in such a way that He would temporarily forget His extraordinary abilities until the moment they were needed for a divine purpose. This happened later in the Ramayana , when Jambavan reminded Hanuman of His hidden powers before His legendary leap across the ocean to Lanka.
