Taittiriya Upanishad – Bhrugu Valli

ōṃ sa̠ha nā̍vavatu । sa̠ha nau̍ bhunaktu । sa̠ha vī̠rya̍-ṅkaravāvahai । tē̠ja̠svinā̠vadhī̍tamastu̠ mā vi̍dviṣā̠vahai̎ । ōṃ śānti̠-śśānti̠-śśānti̍ḥ ॥

English Meaning:
May He protect both of us. May He nourish both of us. May we both work together with great energy and strength. May our study be brilliant and fruitful. May we never hate or oppose one another. Om. Peace, peace, peace.

bhṛgu̠rvai vā̍ru̠ṇiḥ । varu̍ṇa̠-mpita̍ra̠mupa̍sasāra । adhī̍hi bhagavō̠ brahmēti̍ । tasmā̍ ē̠tatprō̍vācha । anna̍-mprā̠ṇa-ñchakṣu̠śśrōtra̠-mmanō̠ vācha̠miti̍ । tagṃ hō̍vācha । yatō̠ vā i̠māni̠ bhūtā̍ni̠ jāya̍ntē । yēna̠ jātā̍ni̠ jīva̍nti । yatpraya̍ntya̠bhisaṃvi̍śanti । tadviji̍jñāsasva । tadbrahmēti̍ । sa tapō̍-‘tapyata । sa tapa̍sta̠ptvā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
Bhṛgu, the son of Varuṇa, approached his father Varuṇa and said, “Teach me, O revered one, about Brahman.” Varuṇa taught him: “Food, Prāṇa, the eyes, the ears, the mind, and speech.” Then he said: “That from which all these beings are born, by which they live after being born, and into which they enter at the time of their departure—seek to know That. That is Brahman.” Bhṛgu performed austerity. Having performed austerity, he proceeded toward understanding.

iti prathamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the First Anuvāka.

anna̠-mbrahmēti̠ vya̍jānāt । a̠nnāddhyē̍va khalvi̠māni̠ bhūtā̍ni̠ jāya̍ntē । annē̍na̠ jātā̍ni̠ jīva̍nti । anna̠-mpraya̍ntya̠bhisaṃvi̍śa̠ntīti̍ । tadvi̠jñāya̍ । puna̍rē̠va varu̍ṇa̠-mpita̍ra̠mupa̍sasāra । adhī̍hi bhagavō̠ brahmēti̍ । tagṃ hō̍vācha । tapa̍sā̠ brahma̠ viji̍jñāsasva । tapō̠ brahmēti̍ । sa tapō̍-‘tapyata । sa tapa̍sta̠ptvā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
He understood that food is Brahman. For indeed, all these beings are born from food; having been born, they live by food; and when they depart, they enter into food. Having understood this, Bhṛgu again approached his father Varuṇa and said, “Teach me, O revered one, about Brahman.” Varuṇa replied: “Seek to know Brahman through austerity. Austerity is Brahman.” Bhṛgu performed austerity. Having performed austerity, he continued his inquiry.

iti dvitīyō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Second Anuvāka.

He understood that mind is Brahman. For indeed, all these beings are born from mind; having been born, they live through mind; and when they depart, they enter into mind. Having understood this, Bhṛgu again approached his father Varuṇa and said, “Teach me, O revered one, about Brahman.” Varuṇa replied: “Seek to know Brahman through austerity. Austerity is Brahman.” Bhṛgu performed austerity. Having performed austerity, he continued his inquiry.

He understood that knowledge or consciousness is Brahman. For indeed, all these beings are born from knowledge; having been born, they live through knowledge; and when they depart, they enter into knowledge. Having understood this, Bhṛgu again approached his father Varuṇa and said, “Teach me, O revered one, about Brahman.” Varuṇa replied: “Seek to know Brahman through austerity. Austerity is Brahman.” Bhṛgu performed austerity. Having performed austerity, he continued his inquiry.

iti pañchamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Fifth Anuvāka.

ā̠na̠ndō bra̠hmēti̠ vya̍jānāt । ā̠nandā̠ddhyē̍va khalvi̠māni̠ bhūtā̍ni̠ jāya̍ntē । ā̠na̠ndēna̠ jātā̍ni̠ jīva̍nti । ā̠na̠nda-mpraya̍ntya̠bhisaṃvi̍śa̠ntīti̍ । saiṣā bhā̎rga̠vī vā̍ru̠ṇī vi̠dyā । pa̠ra̠mē vyō̍ma̠nprati̍ṣṭhitā । sa ya ē̠vaṃ vēda̠ prati̍tiṣṭhati । anna̍vānannā̠dō bha̍vati । ma̠hānbha̍vati pra̠jayā̍ pa̠śubhi̍rbrahmavarcha̠sēna̍ । ma̠hānkī̠rtyā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
Bhṛgu understood that Bliss (Ānanda) is Brahman. From Bliss alone all these beings are born; having been born, they live through Bliss; and into Bliss they enter at the end.

This is the wisdom revealed to Bhṛgu, the son of Varuṇa. It is established in the supreme space of Brahman. Whoever knows this becomes firmly established in Brahman. Such a person becomes blessed with food, becomes the enjoyer of food, and becomes great through offspring, cattle, spiritual radiance, and fame.

iti ṣaṣṭhō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Sixth Anuvāka.

anna̠-nna ni̍ndyāt । tadvra̠tam । prā̠ṇō vā annam̎ । śarī̍ramannā̠dam । prā̠ṇē śarī̍ra̠-mprati̍ṣṭhitam । śarī̍rē prā̠ṇaḥ prati̍ṣṭhitaḥ । tadē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhitam । sa ya ē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhita̠ṃ vēda̠ prati̍tiṣṭhati । anna̍vānannā̠dō bha̍vati । ma̠hānbha̍vati pra̠jayā̍ pa̠śubhi̍rbrahmavarcha̠sēna̍ । ma̠hānkī̠rtyā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
One should never insult or reject food. This is the sacred vow.

Prāṇa (life-force) itself is food, and the body is the eater of food. The body is established in Prāṇa, and Prāṇa is established in the body. Thus, food is established in food.

Whoever understands that food is established in food becomes firmly established. Such a person becomes blessed with food, becomes the enjoyer of food, and becomes great through children, animals, spiritual brilliance, and fame.

iti saptamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Seventh Anuvāka.

anna̠-nna pari̍chakṣīta । tadvra̠tam । āpō̠ vā annam̎ । jyōti̍rannā̠dam । a̠psu jyōti̠ḥ prati̍ṣṭhitam । jyōti̠ṣyāpa̠ḥ prati̍ṣṭhitāḥ । tadē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhitam । sa ya ē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhita̠ṃ vēda̠ prati̍tiṣṭhati । anna̍vānannā̠dō bha̍vati । mahā̠nbha̍vati pra̠jayā̍ pa̠śubhi̍rbrahmavarcha̠sēna̍ । ma̠hānkī̠rtyā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
One should never reject food or turn it away. This is the sacred vow.

Water is food, and light (fire/energy) is the eater of food. Light is established in water, and water is established in light. Thus, food is established in food.

Whoever understands this truth becomes firmly established. Such a person becomes blessed with food, becomes the enjoyer of food, and becomes great through prosperity, children, animals, spiritual brilliance, and fame.

ityaṣṭamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Eighth Anuvāka.

anna̍-mba̠hu ku̍rvīta । tadvra̠tam । pṛ̠thi̠vī vā annam̎ । ā̠kā̠śō̎-‘nnā̠daḥ । pṛ̠thi̠vyāmā̍kā̠śaḥ prati̍ṣṭhitaḥ । ā̠kā̠śē pṛ̍thi̠vī prati̍ṣṭhitā । tadē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhitam । sa ya ē̠tadanna̠mannē̠ prati̍ṣṭhita̠ṃ vēda̠ prati̍tiṣṭhati । anna̍vānannā̠dō bha̍vati । ma̠hānbha̍vati pra̠jayā̍ pa̠śubhi̍rbrahmavarcha̠sēna̍ । ma̠hānkī̠rtyā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning:
One should create and preserve abundant food. This is the sacred vow.

The Earth is food, and space (Ākāśa) is the eater of food. Space is established in Earth, and Earth is established in space. Thus, food is established in food.

Whoever knows this becomes firmly established. Such a person becomes blessed with food, becomes the enjoyer of food, and becomes great through offspring, wealth, spiritual brilliance, and fame.

iti navamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Ninth Anuvāka.

na kañchana vasatau pratyā̍chakṣī̠ta । tadvra̠tam । tasmādyayā kayā cha vidhayā bahva̍nna-mprā̠pnuyāt । arādhyasmā annami̍tyācha̠kṣatē ।

English Meaning:
One should never refuse anyone who comes to the house seeking food. This is the sacred vow. Therefore, by whatever means possible, one should obtain and provide abundant food. Food obtained and offered with respect is considered worthy and sacred.

ya ē̍vaṃ vē̠da । kṣēma i̍ti vā̠chi । yōgakṣēma iti prā̍ṇāpā̠nayōḥ । karmē̍ti ha̠stayōḥ । gatiri̍ti pā̠dayōḥ । vimuktiri̍ti pā̠yau । iti mānuṣī̎ssamā̠jñāḥ ।

English Meaning:
The knower understands:

In speech there is security and protection.

In Prāṇa and Apāna there is preservation and acquisition.

In the hands there is action.

In the feet there is movement.

In elimination there is release.

These are the functions of human existence.

atha dai̠vīḥ । tṛptiri̍ti vṛ̠ṣṭau । balami̍ti vi̠dyuti ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning:
The divine manifestations are:

Satisfaction in rain.

Strength in lightning.

yaśa i̍ti pa̠śuṣu । jyōtiriti na̍kṣatrē̠ṣu । prajātiramṛtamānanda i̍tyupa̠sthē । sarvami̍tyākā̠śē । tatpratiṣṭhētyu̍pāsī̠ta । pratiṣṭhā̍vānbha̠vati ॥

English Meaning:
Fame exists among animals, light shines among the stars, creation and immortal bliss exist in the generative principle, and everything exists in space. One should meditate upon this as the foundation. Whoever does so becomes firmly established.

a̠hamanna-ma̠hamanna-ma̠hamannam । a̠hamannā̠dō(3)-‘̠hamannā̠dō(3)-‘̠hamannā̠daḥ ।

English Meaning:
“I am food. I am food. I am food.
I am the eater of food. I am the eater of food. I am the eater of food.”

a̠hagg ślōka̠kṛda̠hagg ślōka̠kṛda̠hagg ślōka̠kṛt । a̠hamasmi prathamajā ṛtā(3) sya̠ । pūrva-ndēvēbhyō amṛtasya nā(3) bhā̠yi̠ ।

English Meaning:
“I am the creator of the sacred hymn. I am the creator of the sacred hymn. I am the creator of the sacred hymn.

I am the first-born of the Truth. Before the gods, I existed as the source of immortality.”

aha̠ṃ viśva̠-mbhuva̍na̠-mabhya̍bha̠vām । suva̠rna jyōtī̎ḥ । ya ē̠vaṃ vēda̍ । ityu̍pa̠niṣa̍t ॥

English Meaning:
“I have overcome and pervaded the entire universe. I am the golden radiance.”

Whoever knows this supreme truth attains this realization. Thus ends the Upaniṣad.

iti daśamō-‘nuvākaḥ ॥

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Tenth Anuvāka.
