Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 11
dātṛtvaṃ priyavaktṛtvaṃ dhīratvamuchitajñatā ।
abhyāsēna na labhyantē chatvāraḥ sahajā guṇāḥ ॥ 01 ॥
English Meaning:
Generosity, pleasant speech, courage, and sound judgment cannot be acquired merely through practice. These four qualities are regarded as natural virtues.
ātmavargaṃ parityajya paravargaṃ samāśrayēt ।
svayamēva layaṃ yāti yathā rājānyadharmataḥ ॥ 02 ॥
English Meaning:
A person who abandons his own people and seeks refuge among outsiders ultimately brings about his own downfall. Likewise, a king who abandons his rightful duty and follows an unrighteous path eventually destroys his own position and prosperity.
hastī sthūlatanuḥ sa chāṅkuśavaśaḥ kiṃ hastimātrō’ṅkuśō
dīpē prajvalitē praṇaśyati tamaḥ kiṃ dīpamātraṃ tamaḥ ।
vajrēṇāpi hatāḥ patanti girayaḥ kiṃ vajramātraṃ nagā-
stējō yasya virājatē sa balavānsthūlēṣu kaḥ pratyayaḥ ॥ 03 ॥
English Meaning:
An elephant has a huge body, yet it is controlled by a tiny goad—is the goad as large as the elephant? Darkness disappears when a lamp is lit—is the lamp as vast as the darkness? Mountains can fall when struck by the thunderbolt—is the thunderbolt as large as the mountains? Thus, true power lies not in physical size but in the force and brilliance one possesses.
kalau daśasahasrāṇi haristyajati mēdinīm ।
tadardhaṃ jāhnavītōyaṃ tadardhaṃ grāmadēvatāḥ ॥ 04 ॥
English Meaning:
According to this traditional teaching, in the Kali Yuga, after ten thousand years Lord Hari is said to withdraw from the earth; after half that period the sacred waters of the Ganga are said to lose their spiritual potency, and after another half, the influence of village deities is said to decline. This reflects an ancient religious belief.
gṛhāsaktasya nō vidyā nō dayā māṃsabhōjinaḥ ।
dravyalubdhasya nō satyaṃ straiṇasya na pavitratā ॥ 05 ॥
English Meaning:
One who is excessively attached to household pleasures does not develop learning. One who indulges in meat-eating is described here as lacking compassion, the greedy as lacking truthfulness, and one excessively attached to sensual pleasures as lacking purity.
na durjanaḥ sādhudaśāmupaiti
bahuprakārairapi śikṣyamāṇaḥ ।
āmūlasiktaḥ payasā ghṛtēna
na nimbavṛkṣō madhuratvamēti ॥ 06 ॥
English Meaning:
A wicked person does not become virtuous even when instructed in many different ways. Just as a neem tree does not become sweet even when its roots are watered with milk and ghee, an inherently wicked person does not easily change merely through external instruction.
English Meaning:
A person whose inner nature is corrupt cannot become pure merely by bathing at hundreds of sacred places. Just as a vessel burned by liquor cannot be purified simply by washing it, inner impurity cannot be removed through external cleansing alone.
na vētti yō yasya guṇaprakarṣaṃ
sa taṃ sadā nindati nātra chitram ।
yathā kirātī karikumbhalabdhāṃ
muktāṃ parityajya bibharti guñjām ॥ 08 ॥
English Meaning:
One who cannot recognize the excellence of another’s qualities will often criticize that person; this is not surprising. Just as a forest-dwelling woman may discard a precious pearl obtained from an elephant’s head and choose a simple bead instead, an ignorant person may fail to recognize true worth.
yē tu saṃvatsaraṃ pūrṇaṃ nityaṃ maunēna bhuñjatē ।
yugakōṭisahasraṃ taiḥ svargalōkē mahīyatē ॥ 09 ॥
English Meaning:
Those who eat in silence throughout an entire year are said to be honored in heaven for countless ages. This traditional statement emphasizes the spiritual value attributed to silence and self-restraint.
kāmakrōdhau tathā lōbhaṃ svāduśṛṅgārakautukē ।
atinidrātisēvē cha vidyārthī hyaṣṭa varjayēt ॥ 10 ॥
English Meaning:
A student should avoid lust, anger, greed, excessive attachment to delicious food, excessive fascination with sensual pleasures and entertainment, excessive sleep, and a life of indulgence.
akṛṣṭaphalamūlēna vanavāsarataḥ sadā ।
kurutē’harahaḥ śrāddhamṛṣirvipraḥ sa uchyatē ॥ 11 ॥

One who is content with one meal a day, remains devoted to the six prescribed duties, and observes marital relations only at the proper time is described as a twice-born and worthy Brahmin.
laukikē karmaṇi rataḥ paśūnāṃ paripālakaḥ ।

English Meaning:
One who is engaged in worldly occupations, cares for livestock, and practices trade and agriculture is described here as a Brahmin behaving according to the traditional role associated with a Vaishya.
lākṣāditailanīlīnāṃ kausumbhamadhusarpiṣām ।
vikrētā madyamāṃsānāṃ sa vipraḥ śūdra uchyatē ॥ 14 ॥
English Meaning:
One who trades in lac, oil, indigo, safflower, honey, ghee, and similar goods, as well as intoxicating drink and meat, is described in this verse as a Brahmin engaging in occupations traditionally associated with a Shudra.
parakāryavihantā cha dāmbhikaḥ svārthasādhakaḥ ।

English Meaning:
One who obstructs the work of others, is hypocritical, pursues only his own interests, practices deceit, harbors hatred, and appears gentle while being cruel within is compared to the nature of a cat.
vāpīkūpataḍāgānāmārāmasuravēśmanām ।

English Meaning:
One who fearlessly destroys wells, reservoirs, ponds, gardens, temples, and sacred structures is described here as behaving like a mleccha, regardless of his birth.
dēvadravyaṃ gurudravyaṃ paradārābhimarśanam ।
nirvāhaḥ sarvabhūtēṣu vipraśchāṇḍāla uchyatē ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
One who misuses the property of the Divine or of the guru, engages improperly with another’s wife, and behaves unrighteously toward living beings is described here as behaving like a chandala.
dēyaṃ bhōjyadhanaṃ dhanaṃ sukṛtibhirnō sañchayastasya vai
śrīkarṇasya balēścha vikramapatēradyāpi kīrtiḥ sthitā ।
asmākaṃ madhudānabhōgarahitaṃ nāthaṃ chirātsañchitaṃ
nirvāṇāditi naijapādayugalaṃ dharṣantyahō makṣikāḥ ॥ 18 ॥
English Meaning:
Wealth should be given in charity and put to proper use rather than merely accumulated. The fame of generous figures such as Karna, Bali, and Vikramaditya still lives on. In contrast, wealth accumulated for a long time without being given away or enjoyed becomes useless, like honey stored in a hive that is eventually claimed by the bees.
