svānubhūtyēkamānāya namaḥ śāntāya tējasē ॥ 1.1 ॥

English Meaning:
Salutations to that peaceful, radiant Reality which is infinite consciousness, beyond the limitations of space and time, and knowable only through direct inner experience.

bōddhārō matsaragrastāḥ prabhavaḥ smayadūṣitāḥ ।
abōdhōpahatāḥ chānyē jīrṇamaṅgē subhāṣitam ॥ 1.2 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who are learned may be afflicted by jealousy, the powerful by pride, and others by ignorance. Thus, noble words often fall uselessly upon such people, like something placed upon an aged body.

ajñaḥ sukhaṃ ārādhyaḥ
sukhataraṃ ārādhyatē viśēṣajñaḥ ।
jñānalavadurvidagdhaṃ
brahmāpi taṃ naraṃ na rañjayati ॥ 1.3 ॥

English Meaning:
An ignorant person is easy to please, and a truly learned person is even easier to satisfy. But a person who has acquired only a little knowledge and has become arrogant cannot be pleased even by Brahma.

prasahya maṇiṃ uddharēnmakaravaktradaṃṣṭrāntarāt
samudraṃ api santarētprachaladūrmimālākulam ।
bhujaṅgaṃ api kōpitaṃ śirasi puṣpavaddhārayēt
na tu pratiniviṣṭamūrkhajanachittaṃ ārādhayēt ॥ 1.4 ॥

English Meaning:
One may forcibly retrieve a jewel from a crocodile’s jaws, cross a turbulent ocean, or even hold an enraged serpent upon one’s head like a flower; but one should never try to please the obstinate mind of a fool.

labhēta sikatāsu tailaṃ api yatnataḥ pīḍayan
pibēchcha mṛgatṛṣṇikāsu salilaṃ pipāsārditaḥ ।
kvachidapi paryaṭanśaśaviṣāṇaṃ āsādayēt
na tu pratiniviṣṭamūrkhachittaṃ ārādhayēt ॥ 1.5 ॥

English Meaning:
One might hope to extract oil from sand, drink water from a mirage, or even find the horn of a hare while wandering; but satisfying the stubborn mind of a fool is impossible.

vyālaṃ bālamṛṇālatantubhirasau rōddhuṃ samujjṛmbhatē
Chēttuṃ vajramaṇiṃ śirīṣakusumaprāntēna sannahyati ।
mādhuryaṃ madhubindunā rachayituṃ kṣārāmbudhērīhatē
nētuṃ vāñChati yaḥ khalānpathi satāṃ sūktaiḥ sudhāsyandibhiḥ ॥ 1.6 ॥

English Meaning:
A person who tries to restrain a serpent with a tender lotus fiber, cut a diamond with a delicate flower, or sweeten the ocean with a drop of honey is like one who attempts to reform the wicked through nectar-like noble words.

svāyattaṃ ēkāntaguṇaṃ vidhātrā
vinirmitaṃ Chādanaṃ ajñatāyāḥ ।
viśēṣataḥ sarvavidāṃ samājē
vibhūṣaṇaṃ maunaṃ apaṇḍitānām ॥ 1.7 ॥

English Meaning:
Silence, given by the Creator, is a means of concealing ignorance and remains completely within one’s control. Especially in the company of learned people, silence is the greatest ornament of the unlearned.

yadā kiñchijjñō’haṃ dvipa iva madāndhaḥ samabhavaṃ
tadā sarvajñō’smītyabhavadavaliptaṃ mama manaḥ
yadā kiñchitkiñchidbudhajanasakāśādavagataṃ
tadā mūrkhō’smīti jvara iva madō mē vyapagataḥ ॥ 1.8 ॥

English Meaning:
When I possessed only a little knowledge, I became blinded by pride like an elephant and thought myself all-knowing. But as I learned little by little from wise people, my arrogance disappeared like a fever, and I realized how ignorant I was.

kṛmikulachitaṃ lālāklinnaṃ vigandhijugupsitaṃ
nirupamarasaṃ prītyā khādannarāsthi nirāmiṣam ।
surapatiṃ api śvā pārśvasthaṃ vilōkya na śaṅkatē
na hi gaṇayati kṣudrō jantuḥ parigrahaphalgutām ॥ 1.9 ॥

English Meaning:
A dog gladly eats a piece of bone covered with worms, saliva and foulness. Even if Indra himself stood nearby, it would not be intimidated. A low-minded creature does not recognize the insignificance of what it possesses.

śiraḥ śārvaṃ svargātpaśupatiśirastaḥ kṣitidharaṃ
mahīdhrāduttuṅgādavaniṃ avanēśchāpi jaladhim ।
adhō’dhō gaṅgēyaṃ padaṃ upagatā stōkam
athavāvivēkabhraṣṭānāṃ bhavati vinipātaḥ śatamukhaḥ ॥ 1.10 ॥

English Meaning:
The Ganga descends from heaven to Shiva’s head, from there to the mountain, from the mountain to the earth, and finally to the ocean. Likewise, one who loses discrimination experiences downfall through many successive stages.

sarvasyauṣadhaṃ asti śāstravihitaṃ mūrkhasya nāstyauṣadham ॥ 1.11 ॥

English Meaning:
Fire can be controlled by water, the sun’s heat by an umbrella, a raging elephant by a sharp goad, animals by discipline, disease by medicines, and poison by various remedies. But there is no prescribed cure for foolishness.

sāhityasaṅgītakalāvihīnaḥ
sākṣātpaśuḥ puchChaviṣāṇahīnaḥ ।
tṛṇaṃ na khādannapi jīvamānas
tadbhāgadhēyaṃ paramaṃ paśūnām ॥ 1.12 ॥

English Meaning:
A person devoid of literature, music and the arts is truly like an animal without a tail or horns. At least such a person does not eat grass; that is the only good fortune of animals.

yēṣāṃ na vidyā na tapō na dānaṃ
jñānaṃ na śīlaṃ na guṇō na dharmaḥ ।
tē martyalōkē bhuvi bhārabhūtā
manuṣyarūpēṇa mṛgāścharanti ॥ 1.13 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who possess neither learning, austerity, generosity, knowledge, good conduct, virtue nor righteousness are merely a burden upon the earth. They wander in human form like animals.

varaṃ parvatadurgēṣu
bhrāntaṃ vanacharaiḥ saha
na mūrkhajanasamparkaḥ
surēndrabhavanēṣvapi ॥ 1.14 ॥

English Meaning:
It is better to wander through difficult mountain regions with forest dwellers than to associate with fools, even if that association takes place in the palace of Indra.

vikhyātāḥ kavayō vasanti viṣayē yasya prabhōrnirdhanāḥ ।
tajjāḍyaṃ vasudhādhipasya kavayastvarthaṃ vināpīśvarāḥ
kutsyāḥ syuḥ kuparīkṣakā hi maṇayō yairarghataḥ pātitāḥ ॥ 1.15 ॥

English Meaning:
If celebrated poets, whose speech is refined by scripture and who impart wisdom to students, live in poverty within a ruler’s kingdom, the ruler is to blame. A poor judge of jewels lowers their value; similarly, an unworthy ruler diminishes the honor of scholars.

harturyāti na gōcharaṃ kiṃ api śaṃ puṣṇāti yatsarvadā’py
arthibhyaḥ pratipādyamānaṃ aniśaṃ prāpnōti vṛddhiṃ parām ।
kalpāntēṣvapi na prayāti nidhanaṃ vidyākhyaṃ antardhanaṃ
yēṣāṃ tānprati mānaṃ ujjhata nṛpāḥ kastaiḥ saha spardhatē ॥ 1.16 ॥

English Meaning:
Learning is a hidden treasure that cannot be stolen. It always brings benefit, and when imparted to others, it continually increases. Even at the end of the world it does not perish. Therefore, rulers should honor those who possess such wealth.

adhigataparamārthānpaṇḍitānmāvamaṃsthās
tṛṇaṃ iva laghu lakṣmīrnaiva tānsaṃruṇaddhi ।
abhinavamadalēkhāśyāmagaṇḍasthalānāṃ
na bhavati bisatanturvāraṇānām ॥ 1.17 ॥

English Meaning:
Never disrespect scholars who have realized the highest truth. Wealth is as insignificant to them as a blade of grass and cannot bind them. Just as a lotus fiber cannot restrain mighty elephants, riches cannot enslave such wise people.

ambhōjinīvanavihāravilāsaṃ ēva
haṃsasya hanti nitarāṃ kupitō vidhātā ।
na tvasya dugdhajalabhēdavidhau prasiddhāṃ
vaidagdhīkīrtiṃ apahartuṃ asau samarthaḥ ॥ 1.18 ॥

English Meaning:
An angry Creator may take away a swan’s pleasure of roaming among lotus ponds, but cannot take away its celebrated ability to distinguish milk from water. True wisdom remains beyond external circumstances.

kēyūrāṇi na bhūṣayanti puruṣaṃ hārā na chandrōjjvalā
na snānaṃ na vilēpanaṃ na kusumaṃ nālaṅkṛtā mūrdhajāḥ ।

kṣīyantē khalu bhūṣaṇāni satataṃ vāgbhūṣaṇaṃ bhūṣaṇam ॥ 1.19 ॥

English Meaning:
Armlets, radiant necklaces, bathing, perfumes, flowers and beautifully arranged hair do not truly adorn a person. Refined speech alone is the real ornament of a human being. Other ornaments eventually perish, but the ornament of noble speech endures.

vidyā nāma narasya rūpaṃ adhikaṃ prachChannaguptaṃ dhanaṃ
vidyā bhōgakarī yaśaḥsukhakarī vidyā gurūṇāṃ guruḥ ।
vidyā bandhujanō vidēśagamanē vidyā parā dēvatā
vidyā rājasu pūjyatē na tu dhanaṃ vidyāvihīnaḥ paśuḥ ॥ 1.20 ॥

English Meaning:
Learning is the finest form of a person and a hidden treasure. It brings enjoyment, fame and happiness and is itself the teacher of teachers. In a foreign land, learning becomes one’s relative and is like a supreme deity. Kings honor learning, not merely wealth. One without learning is like an animal.

kiṃ sarpairyadi durjanāḥ kiṃ u dhanairvidyā’navadyā yadi
vrīḍā chētkiṃ u bhūṣaṇaiḥ sukavitā yadyasti rājyēna kim ॥ 1.21 ॥

English Meaning:
If one possesses the armor of forgiveness, what need is there to fear enemies? If anger is absent, why fear fire? If good friends are present, what need is there for other remedies? If wicked people are like snakes, why fear actual snakes? If flawless learning is possessed, why depend on wealth? If modesty is present, what need is there for ornaments? And if one possesses excellent poetry, what need is there for a kingdom?

śauryaṃ śatrujanē kṣamā gurujanē kāntājanē dhṛṣṭatā
yē chaivaṃ puruṣāḥ kalāsu kuśalāstēṣvēva lōkasthitiḥ ॥ 1.22 ॥

English Meaning:
Generosity toward one’s own people, compassion toward dependents, prudence toward the wicked, affection toward the good, diplomacy toward rulers, straightforwardness with scholars, courage before enemies, forgiveness toward elders and confidence among loved ones—those skilled in these qualities sustain the order of the world.

jāḍyaṃ dhiyō harati siñchati vāchi satyaṃ

chētaḥ prasādayati dikṣu tanōti kīrtiṃ
satsaṅgatiḥ kathaya kiṃ na karōti puṃsām ॥ 1.23 ॥

English Meaning:
Good company removes dullness from the intellect, fills speech with truth, brings honor and elevation, removes wrongdoing, purifies the heart and spreads one’s fame in every direction. What indeed can good company not accomplish for a person?

jayanti tē sukṛtinō

jarāmaraṇajaṃ bhayam ॥ 1.24 ॥

English Meaning:
Blessed are those virtuous masters of poetry who have attained perfection in literary expression. Their body of fame is beyond the decay and death that affect ordinary physical existence.

ākārō ruchiraḥ sthiraścha vibhavō vidyāvadātaṃ mukhaṃ
tuṣṭē viṣṭapakaṣṭahāriṇi harau samprāpyatē dēhinā ॥ 1.25 ॥

English Meaning:
A person who has a virtuous son, devoted spouse, gracious master, affectionate friend, trustworthy attendants, peaceful mind, pleasing appearance, stable prosperity and a face brightened by learning is considered blessed by Hari, the remover of worldly suffering.

English Meaning:
Refraining from harming living beings, controlling oneself from taking others’ wealth, speaking truth, giving according to one’s means and the proper time, remaining silent regarding another’s spouse, restraining desire, showing humility toward teachers and compassion toward all beings—this is the common path to well-being taught by the scriptures.

prārabhya vighnavihatā viramanti madhyāḥ ।

English Meaning:
Inferior people do not begin a task because they fear obstacles. Mediocre people begin but stop when obstacles arise. The truly excellent continue their undertaking even when repeatedly obstructed.

English Meaning:
One should not seek favors from the wicked or burden a poor friend with requests. One should follow a righteous and honorable way of life and maintain dignity in adversity. The discipline followed by noble people is difficult, like walking upon the edge of a sword.

English Meaning:
Even when weakened by hunger, age and declining strength, the lion does not abandon its dignity. Would the foremost of the proud creatures, who desires the flesh of the head of a mighty elephant, ever eat dry grass? Great people do not abandon self-respect even in hardship.

English Meaning:
A dog is pleased even with a dirty, fleshless bone containing only a little sinew and fat, though it does not satisfy its hunger. A lion ignores a jackal that comes near it and attacks an elephant. Everyone, even in difficulty, seeks an outcome according to their own nature and strength.

English Meaning:
A dog wags its tail, falls at the feet of the giver and displays its mouth and belly in submission for food. A noble elephant, however, merely looks with dignity and eats without such servile behavior.

English Meaning:
There are many eminent beings such as Brihaspati, yet Rahu does not wage war against them. He swallows only the sun and moon. Behold Rahu, the lord of the demons, who, despite possessing only a head, is powerful enough to eclipse the two great luminaries.

English Meaning:
Shesha bears the worlds upon his hoods, the cosmic tortoise bears Shesha upon its back, and the ocean holds even that tortoise within itself. The powers and accomplishments of the great are indeed limitless.

English Meaning:
For Mainaka, son of the Himalaya, losing his wings to Indra’s thunderbolt would have been acceptable, but abandoning his distressed father would not have been. A noble person should not desert loved ones in times of difficulty.

English Meaning:
Even a lion cub can attack the temples of intoxicated elephants. Such is the nature of the strong: age is not the source of courage and brilliance.

śauryē vairiṇi vajraṃ āśu nipatatvarthō’stu naḥ kēvalaṃ
yēnaikēna vinā guṇāstṛṇalavaprāyāḥ samastā imē ॥ 1.38 ॥

English Meaning:
Let lineage fall to the depths, let qualities be lost, let character fall from the mountain and let family prestige burn away—but may wealth remain. For without wealth, all these other qualities are often treated as insignificant as a blade of grass.

English Meaning:
O descendant of Kakutstha, acquire wealth, for much of worldly life rests upon it. From the worldly perspective, little distinction is perceived between one who is destitute and one who is dead.

arthōṣmaṇā virahitaḥ puruṣaḥ kṣaṇēna
sō’pyanya ēva bhavatīti vichitraṃ ētat ॥ 1.40 ॥

English Meaning:
The senses remain the same, the name remains the same, and the intellect and speech remain unchanged. Yet the moment a person loses the warmth of wealth, society begins to regard him as an entirely different person. Such is the strange nature of the world.

English Meaning:
One who possesses wealth is considered noble, learned, educated, virtuous, eloquent and worthy of respect. It is as though, in worldly judgment, all qualities take shelter in gold.

maitrī chāpraṇayātsamṛddhiranayāttyāgapramādāddhanam ॥ 1.42 ॥

English Meaning:
A king is ruined by bad counsel, an ascetic by bad company, a son by excessive indulgence, a scholar by neglect of study, a family by a wicked son and character by association with the wicked. Modesty is lost through intoxication, agriculture through neglect, affection through prolonged separation, friendship through lack of warmth, prosperity through injustice and wealth through careless generosity.

dānaṃ bhōgō nāśastisrō

yō na dadāti na bhuṅktē
tasya tṛtīyā gatirbhavati ॥ 1.43 ॥

English Meaning:
Wealth has three possible destinies: charity, enjoyment and destruction. One who neither gives nor uses wealth appropriately inevitably sends it toward the third destiny—destruction.

tannimnā śōbhantē galitavibhavāśchārthiṣu narāḥ ॥ 1.44 ॥

English Meaning:
A polished gem, a victorious warrior marked by battle, an elephant whose intoxication has subsided, a shallow autumn river, the moon reduced to a crescent and a young woman tired after love—all possess a special beauty even after their fullness has diminished. Likewise, people who have lost their wealth may still retain dignity and grace.

ataśchānaikāntyādgurulaghutayā’rthēṣu dhaninām
avasthā vastūni prathayati cha saṅkōchayati cha ॥ 1.45 ॥

English Meaning:
When a person is poor, he longs even for a small amount of grain; once prosperous, he may regard the whole earth as insignificant as a blade of grass. Thus, the perceived importance and value of things changes according to a wealthy person’s circumstances.

nānāphalaiḥ phalati kalpalatēva bhūmiḥ ॥ 1.46 ॥

English Meaning:
O king, if you wish to obtain the milk of the earth-cow, first nourish the people like a calf. When the people are properly cared for at all times, the earth will yield abundant fruits like a wish-fulfilling tree.

hiṃsrā dayālurapi chārthaparā vadānyā ।
nityavyayā prachuranityadhanāgamā cha
vārāṅganēva nṛpanītiranēkarūpā ॥ 1.47 ॥

English Meaning:
Statecraft may be truthful or untruthful, harsh or pleasing, violent or compassionate, self-interested or generous. It may constantly spend or continually acquire wealth. Thus, political policy assumes many different forms, like a courtesan.

English Meaning:
Obedience to authority, fame, protection of learned people, generosity, proper enjoyment and protection of friends are six important royal virtues. If these are absent, what benefit is there in seeking the shelter of a king?

kūpē paśya payōnidhāvapi ghaṭō gṛhṇāti tulyaṃ jalam ॥ 1.49 ॥

English Meaning:
Whatever amount of wealth destiny has written for a person will reach him even in a desert; he will not receive more merely by being upon Mount Meru. Therefore remain patient and do not behave miserably before the wealthy. A pot draws only as much water from a well or ocean as its own capacity allows.

English Meaning:
O Chataka bird, everyone knows that you depend only upon the clouds. Why then, O noble cloud, do you wait for us with words of helpless dependence?

yaṃ yaṃ paśyasi tasya tasya puratō mā brūhi dīnaṃ vachaḥ ॥ 1.51 ॥

English Meaning:
Listen carefully, O Chataka friend. There are many clouds in the sky, but they are not all alike. Some nourish the earth with rain, while others merely thunder in vain. Therefore, do not speak helplessly before everyone you encounter.

English Meaning:
Cruelty, quarrelling without cause, coveting another’s wealth or spouse, and intolerance toward good people and relatives are natural characteristics of the wicked.

maṇinā bhūṣitaḥ sarpaḥ

English Meaning:
A wicked person should be avoided even if he is adorned with learning. Is a serpent any less frightening merely because it is decorated with a precious jewel?

tējasvinyavaliptatā mukharatā vaktaryaśaktiḥ sthirē
tatkō nāma guṇō bhavētsa guṇināṃ yō durjanairnāṅkitaḥ ॥ 1.54 ॥

English Meaning:
The wicked may mistake modesty for dullness, devotion for hypocrisy, purity for deceit, courage for cruelty, contemplation for confusion, gentle speech for weakness, brilliance for arrogance and eloquence for excessive talk. What virtue can remain untouched when judged by the wicked?

saujanyaṃ yadi kiṃ guṇaiḥ sumahimā yadyasti kiṃ maṇḍanaiḥ
sadvidyā yadi kiṃ dhanairapayaśō yadyasti kiṃ mṛtyunā ॥ 1.55 ॥

English Meaning:
If one possesses the virtue of generosity, what need is there for greed? If one indulges in slander, what further sin is needed? If one practices austerity, why speak falsehood? If the mind is pure, what need is there for pilgrimage? If kindness is present, what further virtue is required? If great fame is possessed, why seek ornaments? If true learning is present, why depend on wealth? And if one is disgraced, what could death add?

English Meaning:
A moon faded by daylight, a woman whose youth has passed, a lotusless lake, a beautiful face without learning, a master enslaved to wealth, a noble person always in poverty, and a wicked person honored at a royal court—these seven things are thorns in my heart.

na kaśchichchaṇḍakōpānām

English Meaning:
A fiercely wrathful ruler has no one whom he truly regards as his own. Just as fire burns even the priest who offers oblations into it, an excessively angry king may harm even those close to him.

sēvādharmaḥ paramagahanō yōgināṃ apyagamyaḥ ॥ 1.58 ॥

English Meaning:
The duty of service is exceedingly difficult. Silence may make one appear dumb, eloquence may make one seem talkative, staying near may appear bold and staying away timid. Patience may be mistaken for cowardice. Such is the difficulty of serving others, a discipline even difficult for yogis to master.

English Meaning:
Who can find happiness in the company of a low person whose wickedness is obvious, whose conduct is uncontrolled, whose past is filled with degrading actions, who has gained wealth merely by chance and who hates virtue?

Chāyēva maitrī khalasajjanānām ॥ 1.60 ॥

English Meaning:
The friendship of the wicked and the friendship of the good differ like a shadow. The friendship of the wicked begins large and gradually diminishes, whereas the friendship of the good may begin modestly and steadily grow stronger.

English Meaning:
The deer, fish and virtuous people live contentedly with grass, water and simple satisfaction respectively. Yet hunters, fishermen and malicious informers become their enemies without cause. Such is the strange hostility found in the world.

English Meaning:
Salutations to those who seek the company of the virtuous, rejoice in others’ qualities, remain humble before teachers, delight in learning, are devoted to their spouse, fear public disgrace, possess devotion to Shiva, practice self-control and remain free from association with the wicked.

English Meaning:
Courage in adversity, forgiveness in prosperity, eloquence in assemblies, valor in battle, delight in honorable fame and devotion to learning are natural qualities of great souls.

English Meaning:
Giving secretly, honoring guests who arrive at one’s home, remaining silent about one’s own favors, speaking of others’ kindness in public, avoiding pride in prosperity and refraining from discussing others’ faults—this conduct of the virtuous is as difficult as walking upon a sword’s edge.

English Meaning:
Water falling upon heated iron loses its identity immediately. The same water shines like a pearl upon a lotus leaf and becomes a real pearl when it enters a shell under the Swati star. Likewise, a person’s qualities are greatly shaped by the company they keep.

English Meaning:
A true son is one who pleases his father through good conduct; a true spouse is one who seeks the welfare of the partner; and a true friend remains equally devoted in happiness and adversity. These three are attained by the virtuous.

English Meaning:
Even Indra, whose guide was Brihaspati, whose weapon was the thunderbolt, whose soldiers were the gods, whose fortress was heaven, whose protector was Hari and whose mount was Airavata, was defeated in battle.

English Meaning:

English Meaning:
We bow to the gods, yet even they are subject to destiny. Destiny itself operates according to the fixed results of karma. If results depend upon karma, why depend only upon gods or fate? Salutations, therefore, to karma itself, before which even destiny has limited power.

English Meaning:
In forests, battles, among enemies, amid water or fire, in the great ocean, upon mountain peaks, while asleep, careless or placed in dangerous situations, the merits of past actions protect a person.

English Meaning:
Right conduct can transform people: it makes the good noble, gives honor to the learned, exposes fools and can turn what seems beneficial into harmful. It can make nectar seem like poison in an instant. Therefore, O noble one, cultivate righteous conduct and do not waste your life on destructive habits.

English Meaning:
Whether an action appears good or otherwise, a wise person should carefully consider its consequences before undertaking it. Actions performed in excessive haste often produce painful results that remain like a thorn in the heart.

English Meaning:
A person lacking the merit of austerity may fail to make proper use of even the most extraordinary opportunities: cooking sesame in a vessel of precious stone, using sandalwood as fuel, ploughing the earth with golden ploughs and surrounding fields with camphor. Even after obtaining this human realm of action, such a person wastes the opportunity.

English Meaning:
A person may dive into the waters, climb Mount Meru, conquer enemies in battle, engage in trade or agriculture, learn every science and art, and even strive to fly through the sky like a bird. Yet what is destined according to karma will happen, and what is not destined cannot be forced into existence.

English Meaning:
For a person blessed with abundant merits from previous actions, even a terrifying forest becomes like a prosperous city, every person becomes like a relative, and the whole earth appears close and filled with treasures.

English Meaning:
What greater gain is there than the company of the virtuous? What greater sorrow than association with the ignorant? Proper use of time is skill; delight in righteousness is true wisdom. One who has conquered the senses is a hero; a faithful spouse is a beloved companion. Learning is wealth, freedom from exile is happiness, and obedience is the true fruit of authority.

apriyavachanadaridraiḥ priyavachanadhanāḍhyaiḥ svadāraparituṣṭaiḥ ।
paraparivādanivṛttaiḥ kvachitkvachinmaṇḍitā vasudhā ॥ 1.104 ॥

English Meaning:
The earth is occasionally adorned by people who are poor in harsh speech, rich in pleasant words, content with their own spouse and free from slandering others.

kadarthitasyāpi hi dhairyavṛttēr
na śakyatē dhairyaguṇaḥ pramārṣṭum ।
adhōmukhasyāpi kṛtasya vahnēr
nādhaḥ śikhā yāti kadāchidēva ॥ 1.105 ॥

English Meaning:
Even when mistreated, a truly courageous person does not abandon courage. Just as the flame of fire does not point downward even when the fire itself is turned upside down, the steadfastness of a noble person cannot be suppressed.

kāntākaṭākṣaviśikhā na lunanti yasya
chittaṃ na nirdahati kōpakṛśānutāpaḥ ।
karṣanti bhūriviṣayāścha na lōbhapāśair
lōkatrayaṃ jayati kṛtsnaṃ idaṃ sa dhīraḥ ॥ 1.106 ॥

English Meaning:
The truly steadfast person is one whose mind is not pierced by the arrows of seductive glances, who is not consumed by anger and regret, and who is not bound by the cords of greed for worldly objects. Such a person can conquer the whole three worlds.

ēkēnāpi hi śūrēṇa
pādākrāntaṃ mahītalam ।
kriyatē bhāskarēṇaiva
sphārasphuritatējasā ॥ 1.107 ॥

English Meaning:
A single courageous person, radiant with extraordinary power, can bring the whole earth under his influence, just as the sun illumines the entire world with its brilliance.

vahnistasya jalāyatē jalanidhiḥ kulyāyatē tatkṣaṇān
mēruḥ svalpaśilāyatē mṛgapatiḥ sadyaḥ kuraṅgāyatē ।
vyālō mālyaguṇāyatē viṣarasaḥ pīyūṣavarṣāyatē
yasyāṅgē’khilalōkavallabhatamaṃ śīlaṃ samunmīlati ॥ 1.108 ॥

English Meaning:
For one whose character has blossomed into a quality beloved by the whole world, fire becomes like water, the ocean like a small stream, Mount Meru like a little rock, a lion like a deer, a serpent like a garland and poison like a shower of nectar.

lajjāguṇaughajananīṃ jananīṃ iva svām
atyantaśuddhahṛdayāṃ anuvartamānām ।
tējasvinaḥ sukhaṃ asūnapi santyajanti
satyavratavyasaninō na punaḥ pratijñām ॥ 1.109 ॥

English Meaning:
Noble and radiant people, devoted to purity, modesty and virtue, may willingly sacrifice even their lives when necessary, but those who are firmly committed to truth never abandon their solemn promise.
