Mahanyasam – 7.8. Ashtanga Pranamam
hiraṇyagarbha-ssamavarta-tāgre bhūtasya jātaḥ patireka āsīt ।
sadādhāra pṛthivī-ndyām-utemā-ṅkasmai devāya haviṣā vidhema ॥
urasā namaḥ ॥ 1 (tai. saṃ. 4.1.8.3)
English Meaning
In the beginning, Hiraṇyagarbha, the Golden Embryo, arose and became the one supreme Lord of all that exists. He established and supported the earth, the heavens, and all the worlds. To which Divine Being should we offer our sacred oblation? We offer our worship to that Supreme Lord.
yaḥ prāṇato nimiṣato mahitvaika idrājā jagato babhūva ।
ya īśe asya dvipada-ścatuṣpadaḥ kasmai devāya haviṣā vidhema ॥
śirasā namaḥ ॥ 2 (tai. saṃ. 4.1.8.4)
English Meaning
He who, through His greatness, became the one supreme King and Lord of all that lives and moves; He who rules over all beings, both those with two feet and those with four feet—to which Divine Being should we offer our sacred oblation? We offer our reverence to that Supreme Lord.
brahmajajñāna-mprathama-mpurastā-dvisīmata-ssurucho vena āvaḥ ।
sa budhniyā upamā asya viṣṭhā-ssataścha yonima-sataścha vivaḥ ।
dṛṣyā namaḥ ॥ 3 (tai. saṃ. 4.2.8.2.)
English Meaning
The Divine Knowledge of Brahman manifested first in the beginning, shining brilliantly before all creation. The radiant Divine Principle revealed itself through the various forms and foundations of existence. It is the source, the support, and the origin from which the manifest and unmanifest aspects of creation arise. We offer our reverence to that Divine Reality.
mahī dyauḥ pṛthivī cha na imaṃ yajña-mmimikṣatām ।
pipṛtānno bharīmabhiḥ ।
manasā namaḥ ॥ 4 (tai. saṃ. 3.3.10.2)
English Meaning
May the vast Heaven and the Earth together accept and bless this sacred sacrifice of ours. May they nourish, protect, and sustain us with abundant strength and blessings. With our mind and heart, we offer our reverence to them.
upaśvāsaya pṛthivīmuta dyā-mpurutrā te manutāṃ viṣṭhita-ñjagat ।
sa dundubhe sajūrindreṇa devai-rdūrāddavīyo apasedha śatrūn ।
vachasā namaḥ ॥ 5 (tai. saṃ. 4.6.6.6)
English Meaning
Cause the Earth and Heaven to resound and awaken; may the entire world established in many places become aware and attentive. O sacred Dundubhi, together with Indra and the divine powers, drive away our enemies and harmful forces from afar, sending them farther and farther away. With our speech, we offer our reverence.
agne naya supathā rāye asmān viśvāni deva vayunāni vidvān ।
yuyodhyasmaj-juhurāṇa-meno bhūyiṣṭhānte nama uktiṃ vidhema ॥
padbhyā-nnamaḥ ॥ 6 (tai. saṃ. 1.1.14.3)
English Meaning
O Agni, Divine Lord, lead us by the righteous and auspicious path toward prosperity and well-being. You know all the ways and divine principles of existence. Remove from us the sinful actions and harmful tendencies that lead us astray. To You we offer our most profound words of reverence and worship.
yā te agne rudriyā tanūstayā naḥ pāhi tasyāste svāhā ।
yā te agne-‘yāśayā rajāśayā harāśayā tanūrvarṣiṣṭhā gahvareṣṭhograṃ vacho apāvadhī-ntveṣaṃ vacho apāvadhīṃ svāhā ॥
karābhyā-nnamaḥ ॥ 7 (tai. saṃ. 1.2.11.2)
English Meaning
O Agni, protect us through that Rudra-like and powerful form of Yours. To that divine form of Yours, we offer this oblation with Svāhā. O Agni, whatever fierce, powerful, hidden, or formidable forms You possess, may those forces remove harsh, destructive, and harmful speech and drive away all hostile influences. May Your radiant power protect and purify us. Svāhā. With our hands, we offer our reverence.
imaṃ yamaprastaramāhi sīdāṅgirobhiḥ pitṛbhi-ssaṃvidānaḥ ।
ātvā mantrāḥ kaviśastā vahantvenā rājan haviṣā mādayasva ॥
karṇābhyā-nnamaḥ ॥ 8 (tai. saṃ. 2.6.12.6)
English Meaning
O Yama, come and sit upon this sacred seat, accompanied by the Angirasa sages and the ancestral Fathers. May the sacred mantras, praised and uttered by the wise, bring You here. O King, accept this offering and be pleased with the sacred oblation presented to You. With our ears, we offer our reverence.
urasā śirasā dṛṣṭyā mana̍sā vachasā tathā ।
padbhyā-ṅkarābhyā-ṅkarṇābhyā-mpraṇāmō-‘ṣṭāṅga uchyatē ॥
English Meaning
A complete eight-limbed prostration is said to be performed with the chest, head, eyes, mind, and speech, together with the feet, hands, and ears. By offering all these parts of oneself in humility, one expresses complete surrender and reverence before the Divine.
umāmahēśvarābhyā-nnamaḥ ॥
English Meaning
Salutations to Umā and Mahēśvara, the Divine Mother and Lord Śiva.
