Shri Pashupati Ashtakam
॥ श्री पशुपत्यष्टकम् ॥
॥ ध्यानम् ॥
ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं
रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्।
पद्मासीनं समन्तात्स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं
विश्वाद्यं विश्वबीजं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम्॥
॥ अथ स्तोत्रम् ॥
Dhyāyennityaṁ Maheśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ chāruchandrāvataṁsaṁ
Ratnākalpojjvalāṅgaṁ paraśu-mṛga-varābhīti-hastaṁ prasannam।
Padmāsīnaṁ samantāt stutam amaragaṇair vyāghrakṛttiṁ vasānaṁ
Viśvādhyaṁ viśvabījaṁ nikhilabhayaharaṁ pañcavaktraṁ trinetram॥
Meaning
Meditate daily upon Lord Mahesh (Shiva), who shines like a silver mountain, adorned with the beautiful crescent moon. His radiant body glows like precious gems. He holds an axe, a deer, grants boons, and offers fearlessness with His hands. Seated on a lotus, He is praised by all the celestial beings and wears a tiger skin. He is the origin of the universe, the seed of all creation, the remover of every fear, the five-faced Lord with three divine eyes.
पशुपतिं द्युपतिं धरणीपतिं भुजगलोकपतिं च सतीपतिम्।
प्रणतभक्तजनार्तिहरं परं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥1॥
Paśupatiṁ dyupatiṁ dharaṇīpatiṁ bhujagalokapatiṁ cha satīpatim।
Praṇata-bhakta-janārtiharaṁ paraṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥1॥
Meaning
O people, worship Lord Shiva, the Lord of all beings, the Lord of heaven, the Lord of earth, the Lord of the serpent world, and the husband of Goddess Sati (Parvati). He removes the sufferings of His devoted devotees and is the Supreme Lord.
न जनको जननी न च सोदरो न तनयो न च भूरिबलं कुलम्।
अवति कोऽपि न कालवशं गतं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥2॥
Na janako jananī na cha sodaro na tanayo na cha bhūribalaṁ kulam।
Avati ko’pi na kālavaśaṁ gataṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥2॥
Meaning
Neither father, mother, brother, son, nor a powerful family can protect a person when the appointed time of death arrives. Therefore, O people, worship Lord Girijapati (Shiva), the only true refuge.
मुरजडिण्डिमवाद्यविलक्षणं मधुरपञ्चमनादविशारदम्।
प्रमथभूतगणैरपि सेवितं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥3॥
Muraja-ḍiṇḍima-vādya-vilakṣaṇaṁ madhura-pañcama-nāda-viśāradam।
Pramatha-bhūta-gaṇairapi sevitaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥3॥
Meaning
Worship Lord Shiva, who delights in the sounds of drums and sacred musical instruments, who is the master of melodious divine music, and who is lovingly served by His attendants, the Pramatha ganas and celestial beings.
शरणदं सुखदं शरणान्वितं शिव शिवेति शिवेति नतं नृणाम्।
अभयदं करुणावरुणालयं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥4॥
Śaraṇadaṁ sukhadaṁ śaraṇānvitaṁ Śiva Śiveti Śiveti nataṁ nṛṇām।
Abhayadaṁ karuṇāvaruṇālayaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥4॥
Meaning
Worship Lord Shiva, who grants refuge, happiness, and protection to all who surrender to Him. Those who bow chanting “Shiva, Shiva” receive His fearlessness and endless compassion, for He is the very ocean of mercy.
नरशिरोरचितं मणिकुण्डलं भुजगहारमुदं वृषभध्वजम्।
चितिरजोधवलीकृतविग्रहं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥5॥
Nara-śirorachitaṁ maṇikuṇḍalaṁ bhujagahāramudaṁ vṛṣabhadhvajam।
Chitirajodhavalīkṛta-vigrahaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥5॥
Meaning
Worship Lord Shiva, who wears unique earrings, a garland of serpents, whose banner bears the sacred bull Nandi, and whose divine body is covered with the holy ash from the cremation ground, symbolizing detachment and transcendence.
मखविनाशकरं शशिशेखरं सततमध्वरभाजिफलप्रदम्।
प्रलयदग्धसुरासुरमानवं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥6॥
Makhavināśakaraṁ śaśiśekharaṁ satatam adhvarabhāji-phalapradam।
Pralayadagdha-surāsura-mānavaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥6॥
Meaning
Worship Lord Shiva, who destroyed Daksha’s sacrifice, who wears the crescent moon upon His head, who grants the fruits of righteous sacrifices, and who alone remains beyond the destruction of gods, demons, and humans during cosmic dissolution.
मदमपास्य चिरं हृदि संस्थितं मरणजन्मजराभयपीडितम्।
जगदुदीक्ष्य समीपभयाकुलं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥7॥
Madam apāsya chiraṁ hṛdi saṁsthitaṁ maraṇa-janma-jarā-bhaya-pīḍitam।
Jagadudīkṣya samīpa-bhayākulaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥7॥
Meaning
Abandon pride and recognize that every living being is troubled by birth, old age, death, and fear. Seeing the world’s impermanence and uncertainty, O people, worship Lord Shiva, the eternal protector.
हरिविरञ्चिसुराधिपपूजितं यमजनेशधनेशनमस्कृतम्।
त्रिनयनं भुवनत्रितयाधिपं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्॥8॥
Harivirañchi-surādhipa-pūjitaṁ Yamajaneśa-dhaneśa-namaskṛtam।
Trinayanaṁ bhuvanatritayādhipaṁ bhajata re manujā Girijāpatim॥8॥
Meaning
Worship Lord Shiva, who is adored by Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Indra, Yama, Kubera, and all the gods. He is the three-eyed Lord and the Supreme Ruler of the three worlds.
पशुपतेरिदमष्टकमद्भुतं विरचितं पृथिवीपतिसूरिणा ।
पठति संशृणुते मनुजः सदा शिवपुरीं वसते लभते मुदम्॥9॥
Paśupateridamaṣṭakamadbhutaṁ virachitaṁ Pṛthivīpati Sūriṇā।
Paṭhati saṁśṛṇute manujaḥ sadā Śivapurīṁ vasate labhate mudam॥9॥
Meaning
This wonderful hymn to Lord Pashupati was composed by the great sage Prithvipati Suri. Whoever regularly recites or listens to this sacred Ashtakam attains the divine abode of Lord Shiva (Shivapuri) and enjoys eternal happiness, peace, and spiritual bliss.
