Who Evolves

Further, what is the cause of growth or evolution? Why should an entity which was sometime ago in the vegetable stale now appear in an animal body? Is its advancement or promotion to a higher state of being only accidental? If not, in what way did it merit the promotion? Is the vegetable capable of doing any responsible act or Karma for which it is rewarded? If it is itself not capable of doing any, is its ascent in evolution compulsory and due to the act of another agent? If so, does it mean that the fruits of action may go to one who did nothing to merit them? Among the lower animals themselves one is found happier throughout its life-span, from the moment of its birth, than another? Why should it be so? The differences in the animal’s experience of pain and pleasure must have their own causes. What are they? The causes must relate to the previous existence of every such Jiva in question. This previous life could not have been that of a lower animal, for lower animals can do no responsible Karma. The law of Karma and justice, if it is true at all, shows unmistakably that there is no real foundation for the notion that there is evolution going on below the stage of man. Every brute, every little insect and every one of the plants and trees, all were, and are going to be again human beings themselves. They are all temporarily only suspended from the class of humanity for some offences.

It may be asked, if all non-human states of being are only the results of the previous human Karma, in the beginning stage of the universe, there must have been only men and nothing else; is there any authority to show that there was a time when there were men alone and that the non-human states of being appeared only later on? The question assumes that there was a beginning for the universe. It may be that every Kalpa or Cycle of the universe has a beginning; but at the beginning of a Kalpa the universe takes the appearance in the condition in which it was just before the Pralaya or dissolution that preceded the Kalpa in question. The universe, with this alternate existence of Kalpa and Pralaya has had no beginning at all. None can say that there was a beginning for the existence of the power of Maya in the Self. As there was no beginning for the universe, there could not have been any period of time when there were men alone. At all times there have been human as well as non-human states of being in the manifested universe.

Who Evolves – Soul, Mind, Character, and Spiritual Growth

Who Evolves is a deep question connected with human life, inner growth, and spiritual understanding. At first, it may seem that the body evolves because it grows from childhood to youth and from youth to old age. But physical change alone is not true evolution. The body changes naturally with time, but real progress is seen in awareness, character, wisdom, self-control, and purity of heart.

Who Evolves can be understood by looking beyond the body. The body is only an instrument. It eats, walks, works, rests, and finally becomes weak. The mind also changes. It thinks, desires, remembers, fears, and reacts. But behind body and mind, there is a deeper conscious principle, often called the soul or self. This inner being experiences life, learns from actions, and moves toward higher understanding.

In ordinary life, people mostly identify themselves with the body and personality. They say, “I am strong,” “I am weak,” “I am successful,” or “I am a failure.” But these are temporary conditions. Strength can reduce, success can change, emotions can shift, and opinions can disappear. The true journey of evolution is not about these temporary labels. It is about the gradual awakening of the inner self.

Who Evolves becomes clearer when we observe experience. A person may pass through joy, sorrow, failure, love, loss, duty, and struggle. Each experience teaches something. Pain may teach patience, success may teach responsibility, failure may teach humility, and love may teach sacrifice. Through these lessons, the mind becomes refined and the soul gains maturity.

Evolution does not happen only through comfort. In fact, many times difficulty becomes the strongest teacher. A person who suffers may become more compassionate. A person who faces failure may become more disciplined. A person who loses pride may become humble. If life is understood properly, every situation can become a step toward growth.

The mind plays an important role in this process. If the mind remains controlled by anger, greed, jealousy, fear, and attachment, evolution becomes slow. These lower tendencies keep a person bound to selfishness and ignorance. But when the mind is trained through discipline, meditation, self-study, service, and truthfulness, it becomes a powerful helper in spiritual progress.

Who Evolves is not the ego. Ego only creates the false sense of “I” and “mine.” It wants praise, control, possession, and superiority. Ego may become proud of growth, but that pride itself blocks real progress. True evolution begins when ego becomes weaker and humility becomes stronger. A person starts seeing life with more honesty and less selfishness.

Character is one of the clearest signs of evolution. A truly growing person becomes more truthful, kind, patient, forgiving, and responsible. They do not measure progress only by money, status, education, or outer success. These things may be useful, but they are incomplete without inner refinement. A person with great knowledge but no compassion has not evolved deeply.

Spiritual evolution is also connected with karma. Every thought, word, and action leaves an impression on the mind. Good actions purify, while harmful actions disturb. When a person acts with selfish desire, they strengthen bondage. When they act with wisdom, service, and detachment, they move toward freedom. In this way, daily conduct becomes a field of evolution.

Who Evolves is the individual soul passing through experience, learning, purification, and awakening. The soul appears bound when it identifies with body, mind, desire, and ego. It becomes freer as knowledge increases and attachment decreases. The journey is from ignorance to wisdom, from selfishness to service, from restlessness to peace, and from limitation to freedom.

This evolution is not automatic in the highest sense. Time alone does not make a person wise. Some people grow older but remain angry, greedy, and immature. Real growth requires conscious effort. A person must observe themselves, correct mistakes, control harmful desires, choose good company, and practice noble values. Without effort, life may pass, but inner progress may remain limited.

Education, religion, meditation, and service are all helpful when they transform the heart. Reading many books is not enough if behavior remains harsh. Performing rituals is not enough if the mind remains selfish. Meditation is not complete if daily actions remain careless. True evolution must appear in thought, speech, conduct, and relationships.

Who Evolves also teaches that every person has the possibility of growth. No one is permanently limited by past mistakes or present weakness. Anger can become strength, desire can become dedication, fear can become caution, and selfishness can become compassion. With sincere effort, the personality can be purified and lifted.

In the end, Who Evolves points toward the soul’s journey through life, karma, experience, and self-knowledge. The body changes, the mind learns, the ego struggles, but the inner self moves toward awakening. Real evolution is not merely outer progress; it is the rise of consciousness. When a person becomes wiser, kinder, calmer, and freer from ego, true evolution is taking place.
