Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds

By Swami Sivananda

You have the whole menagerie within you – the lion, the tiger, the serpent, the elephant, the ape and the peacock. Bring them under your control. The beauty of the flesh is really due to the life-giving principle, Prana. The beauty is attributable to the light that emanates from Atman. The nasty body with oozing discharges from nine gutters composed of the five elements is a Jada Vastu and Apavitra. Always entertain this idea. Have a clear-cut, well-defined, image or picture like this. You will conquer lust by such a mental drill. If you understand the doctrine of unity in diversity, if you know there is only one matter, one energy, one mind-substance, one life, one existence, one Sat, one Reality, and if you entertain always such a thought, you can control Krodha. If you remember that you are only an instrument in the hands of God, that God is everything, that God does everything, that God is just, then you can get rid of Ahamkara. You can annihilate Dvesha by Pratipaksha Bhavana. Look to the brighter side of persons. Ignore the dark aspect.

Emotion is a motive power like the steam of an engine. It helps you in your evolution. Had it not been for the presence of emotion, you would have passed into a state of passivity or inertia. It gives a push for action or motion. It is a blessing. But you must not become a prey to emotions. You must not allow them to bubble out. You must purify and calm the surging emotions. You must allow it to rise slowly and subside quietly from the mind-ocean. You must keep the emotion under perfect control. Do not mistake physical sensations for higher sublime emotions. Do not be carried away by emotions. There are certain people who like to hear of new sensational events just to arouse their emotions. They live on emotions; otherwise they feel quite dull. This is a great weakness. This must be eradicated if they like to lead a calm and quiet life.

All evil qualities proceed from anger. If you control anger, all evil qualities will vanish by themselves.

Ahamkara, Samkalpa, Vasana, Prana have intimate connection with the mind. There cannot be any mind without these four. Prana is the life of the mind. Ahamkara is the root of the mind. Sankalpas are the branches of the mind-tree. Vasana is the seed of the mind. This deep-rooted tree of Samsara which ramifies in various directions with branches full of flowers, tendrils, fruits, etc., has the mind as its root. If this root-mind is destroyed, the tree of Samsara – this tree of birth and death – will also be destroyed. Cut this root – mind – with the axe of Brahma Jnana. Chop off the branches (Sankalpas) with the knife of Viveka-Vichara.

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds – Inner Discipline, Awareness, and Spiritual Victory

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds is a powerful spiritual subject that points to the hidden places where the mind protects its old habits, desires, fears, attachments, and ego. The mind does not easily give up its familiar tendencies. It builds strongholds through repeated thoughts, emotional reactions, sense-cravings, pride, and false identification. A seeker must patiently discover these inner fortresses and overcome them through wisdom, purity, devotion, and steady practice.

The first stronghold is desire. The mind constantly promises happiness through objects, people, pleasure, success, praise, and comfort. But when one desire is fulfilled, another arises. This endless movement keeps the seeker restless and dependent. Desire becomes weak only when the aspirant practices discrimination and understands that lasting peace cannot come from temporary things.

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds begins with honest self-observation. The seeker must watch the mind throughout the day and see where it is most easily defeated. What makes me angry? What attracts me strongly? What fear controls my decisions? Where does pride appear? What habit returns again and again? These questions reveal the hidden centres of bondage.

Another stronghold is anger. Anger rises when desire is blocked, ego is hurt, or expectation is not fulfilled. It burns peace, harms relationships, and weakens judgment. The seeker should not justify anger as strength. Real strength is the ability to pause, breathe, remain aware, and respond wisely. Patience, forgiveness, and prayer gradually reduce the force of anger.

Pride is a subtle and dangerous fortress. A person may be proud of knowledge, wealth, beauty, discipline, devotion, service, or even humility. Pride separates the heart from others and prevents learning. The seeker must remember that all talents, opportunities, and progress are supported by grace. Humility opens the door to wisdom, while pride keeps the mind locked in ignorance.

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds also requires sense-control. The senses pull the mind outward through form, sound, taste, touch, smell, entertainment, and comfort. These experiences are not evil, but attachment to them creates slavery. Moderation in food, speech, sleep, pleasure, and social habits protects mental energy and prepares the mind for concentration.

Fear is another hidden stronghold. Fear of failure, criticism, loss, sickness, loneliness, death, or insecurity keeps the mind weak. A seeker should examine fear in the light of faith and wisdom. Many fears are created by imagination. When one remembers the Divine, trusts the law of life, and rests in the witnessing self, fear slowly loses its power.

Attachment is difficult to conquer because it often appears as love. True love gives freedom, kindness, and strength. Attachment creates dependence, anxiety, control, and sorrow. The seeker must learn to love without clinging. Duties should be performed sincerely, relationships should be respected, but the heart should remain rooted in the eternal truth.

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds depends greatly on regular spiritual practice. Occasional inspiration is not enough. Daily meditation, mantra repetition, prayer, study of noble teachings, selfless service, and self-examination gradually weaken old tendencies. Small victories repeated every day become a great power. The mind is trained through consistency, not through mood.

Control of speech is a direct way to weaken mental strongholds. Harsh words, gossip, lies, criticism, and useless arguments strengthen anger, pride, and restlessness. Speak truthfully, kindly, and only when needed. Silence, when practiced wisely, gathers scattered energy and turns the mind inward. A disciplined tongue supports a disciplined mind.

Good company is another essential support. The mind absorbs impressions from people, books, conversations, entertainment, and surroundings. Negative company strengthens desire, doubt, indulgence, and carelessness. Satsang, noble reading, uplifting discussion, and association with sincere seekers strengthen faith, purity, courage, and self-control.

Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds becomes easier when devotion enters the heart. Prayer, surrender, worship, and remembrance of the Divine give the mind a higher taste. When love for God becomes strong, lower attractions lose their charm. Devotion softens ego, purifies emotion, and gives strength when personal effort feels weak.

Meditation reveals the deeper secret of the mind. When the seeker sits silently and observes thoughts, emotions, desires, and memories, they begin to see that all mental movements are changing. The witness that knows them remains steady. This recognition gives freedom from blind identification. The strongholds of the mind become weaker when the seeker rests in awareness.

Selfless service breaks the fortress of selfishness. When life revolves only around personal gain, comfort, praise, and control, ego becomes strong. Service expands the heart and purifies motives. Work done as an offering to the Divine becomes a spiritual discipline. It teaches humility, compassion, and inner balance.

In the end, Conquest of the Mind’s Strongholds is the victory of awareness over unconscious habit, wisdom over desire, humility over ego, and inner freedom over bondage. Through self-observation, sense-control, speech-control, meditation, devotion, service, good company, detachment, and steady practice, the seeker slowly conquers the hidden forces of the mind and moves toward peace, purity, and liberation.
