Hariyali Devi Temple

Hariyali Devi Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Hariyali Devi, a form of Maa Durga. Nestled amidst the serene Garhwal Himalayas of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, this temple is one of the Siddha Peethas, drawing thousands of devotees during Navratri and Diwali.

The temple is especially known for its natural surroundings and spiritual aura.

Mythological Significance & History

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Vishnu dismembered the body of Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra, her hand is believed to have fallen at this sacred spot. Hence, this place is considered a Shaktipeeth. Over time, locals started worshipping the fallen body part in the form of Hariyali Devi, symbolizing prosperity and fertility. The temple has been an ancient site of worship for centuries, and its legends are deeply rooted in Shaivism and Shaktism traditions.

Significance of the Temple

Spiritual Significance: It is believed that darshan of Hariyali Devi during Navratri fulfills wishes and removes obstacles.
Cultural Importance: Local women visit the temple to pray for marital bliss, fertility, and well-being of their family.
Siddha Peeth: Considered one of the powerful Shaktipeethas where Goddess Sati’s hand fell.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in traditional Himalayan stone architecture, with a pyramid-shaped roof.

The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Hariyali Devi along with Kshatrapal and Heet Devi.

The deity is decked with gold ornaments, red and green clothes, and is carried out in a palanquin (doli) during festivals.

The surrounding area is adorned with lush green valleys, symbolic of the name Hariyali (Greenery) Devi.

How to Reach to Temple

Location: Hariyali Devi Temple is located near Pokhari village in Rudraprayag District, Uttarakhand.

Trek:
A small trek of about 1.5 km is required from the last motorable road to reach the temple.

By Road:
From Rudraprayag, the temple is around 38 km. You can hire taxis or use shared jeeps.

By Train:
Nearest railway station is Rishikesh (approx. 170 km). From there, taxis or buses are available.

By Air:
Nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (approx. 190 km). Continue by road.
