Nyaya Darshan is one of the six classical schools of Indian philosophy. It is traditionally attributed to Maharishi Gautama, also known as Akshapada Gautama. The word Nyaya means a method, rule, or logical approach. This philosophy gives great importance to reasoning, logic, valid knowledge, and careful examination of truth.
Nyaya Darshan explains how a person can gain correct knowledge and remove ignorance. It discusses different Pramanas, or reliable means of knowledge, including perception, inference, comparison, and trustworthy verbal testimony. Through logical analysis, a person can understand the difference between true knowledge and error.
The philosophy also examines important subjects such as the Self (Atman), the physical world, mind, senses, cause and effect, and liberation (Moksha). Nyaya teaches that ignorance is one of the causes of suffering, while correct knowledge can help a person overcome misunderstanding and move toward freedom.
Nyaya Darshan is closely connected with Vaisheshika Darshan, and both traditions developed detailed methods for analyzing reality. Its emphasis on logic and reasoning has made it an important part of India’s intellectual and philosophical heritage.
The main message of Nyaya Darshan is that careful reasoning, correct knowledge, and understanding of reality can help a person overcome ignorance and progress toward liberation.
