Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 14

ātmāparādhavṛkṣasya phalānyētāni dēhinām ।
dāridryaduḥkharōgāṇi bandhanavyasanāni cha ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
The fruits of the tree of one’s own wrongdoings are poverty, sorrow, disease, bondage, and various forms of suffering.

punarvittaṃ punarmitraṃ punarbhāryā punarmahī ।
ētatsarvaṃ punarlabhyaṃ na śarīraṃ punaḥ punaḥ ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
Wealth can be regained, friends can be found again, and even a wife and land may be regained; but this human body cannot be obtained again and again.

bahūnāṃ chaiva sattvānāṃ samavāyō ripuñjayaḥ ।
varṣādhārādharō mēghastṛṇairapi nivāryatē ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
O conqueror of enemies! When many beings unite, even a powerful enemy can be overcome. Just as a mass of grass can obstruct water pouring from a rain-bearing cloud.

jalē tailaṃ khalē guhyaṃ pātrē dānaṃ manāgapi ।
prājñē śāstraṃ svayaṃ yāti vistāraṃ vastuśaktitaḥ ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
Oil spreads upon water, a secret revealed to a wicked person spreads quickly, and a gift given to an unworthy person is wasted. But knowledge of the scriptures given to a wise person naturally expands through its own power.

dharmākhyānē śmaśānē cha rōgiṇāṃ yā matirbhavēt ।
sā sarvadaiva tiṣṭhēchchētkō na muchyēta bandhanāt ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
The understanding that arises while listening to spiritual teachings, in a cremation ground, or during illness is filled with detachment. If that understanding remained forever, who would fail to become free from worldly bondage?

utpannapaśchāttāpasya buddhirbhavati yādṛśī ।
tādṛśī yadi pūrvaṃ syātkasya na syānmahōdayaḥ ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
The wisdom that arises after one has committed a mistake and feels remorse—if the same wisdom were present beforehand, who would not attain great prosperity and welfare?

dānē tapasi śauryē vā vijñānē vinayē nayē ।
vismayō nahi kartavyō bahuratnā vasundharā ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
One should not be astonished by excellence in charity, austerity, courage, knowledge, humility, or good conduct, for the earth is filled with many kinds of precious people and virtues.

dūrasthō’pi na dūrasthō yō yasya manasi sthitaḥ ।
yō yasya hṛdayē nāsti samīpasthō’pi dūrataḥ ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
One who resides in another’s mind is not far away, even when physically distant. One who does not live in the heart remains distant even when standing nearby.

yasmāchcha priyamichChēttu tasya brūyātsadā priyam ।
vyādhō mṛgavadhaṃ kartuṃ gītaṃ gāyati susvaram ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
If one wishes to accomplish something through another person, one should always speak pleasantly to that person. Just as a hunter sings sweetly to lure a deer for its capture.

atyāsannā vināśāya dūrasthā na phalapradā ।
sēvyatāṃ madhyabhāvēna rājā vahnirguruḥ striyaḥ ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
Excessive closeness can lead to destruction, while excessive distance gives no benefit. Therefore, one should maintain a proper middle course in dealing with a king, fire, a teacher, and women.

agnirāpaḥ striyō mūrkhāḥ sarpā rājakulāni cha ।
nityaṃ yatnēna sēvyāni sadyaḥ prāṇaharāṇi ṣaṭ ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
Fire, water, women, fools, serpents, and royal households—these six should always be approached with great caution, for they can suddenly become threats to life.

sa jīvati guṇā yasya yasya dharmaḥ sa jīvati ।
guṇadharmavihīnasya jīvitaṃ niṣprayōjanam ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
One truly lives who possesses virtues, and one truly lives who follows righteousness. The life of a person devoid of virtues and righteous conduct is without purpose.

yadīchChasi vaśīkartuṃ jagadēkēna karmaṇā ।
purā pañchadaśāsyēbhyō gāṃ charantī nivāraya ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
If you wish to bring the world under control through a single act, first try to restrain a grazing cow from fifteen mouths before it. The verse points to the difficulty of controlling the many forces and desires of the world.

prastāvasadṛśaṃ vākyaṃ prabhāvasadṛśaṃ priyam ।
ātmaśaktisamaṃ kōpaṃ yō jānāti sa paṇḍitaḥ ॥ 14 ॥
