Love Divine
If one word could sum up the essence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s life and teachings, that word would be “love”. Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s life, His message, His ideals and His humanitarian works can all be enshrined in one word—Love. His life is His message and His message is love. He is truly the incarnation of love—Love walking on two legs. He says, “God is love; live in love,” and exhorts us to “Start the day with love; fill the day with love; spend the day with love; end the day with love—this is the way to God.” Just as the moon can be seen only by moonlight and not with the help of a candle, God who is the embodiment of love, can be experienced only through love. “But this love,” Baba says, “is unconditional, pure, selfless love which is directed towards God with one-pointedness.”
Lord Jesus Christ, when asked what is the greatest commandment, said, “The greatest and the first commandment is love thy God with all thy heart, mind, soul and strength; and love thy neighbour as thyself.” The great apostle St. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians says, “Faith, hope and love abide, but the greatest of these is love.” Swami says, “Love is the source; love is the path; and love is the goal.” So, when we live our lives saturated with love, our lives get sanctified. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, “The greatest examples of pure, pristine love are the gopis (cowherd girls of Brindavan) of yore.” There are some other examples of pure, unconditional, Divine Love in this compendium. If one could master this single Divine Principle, the other four human values—Truth, Peace, Righteousness and Non-violence—would also, automatically be mastered. Perfect mastery of love amounts to nothing less than Self-realisation.
This study guide is a compendium of quotes from the following works of Sri Sathya Sai Baba: Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vahinis, Summer Showers. The editors have attempted to remain faithful to the presentation of the quotes as they occur in the online editions of the works from which they come, with the following exceptions: 1) correction of typos; 2) correction of grammar and syntax; 3) changes that incorporate gender-inclusive language; 4) standardisation of the transliteration of Sanskrit; and 5) minor changes to facilitate readability and coherence in the context of the study guide.
Love Divine – A Sacred Path Of Pure Devotion And Selfless Service
Love Divine is the highest form of love because it is pure, selfless, forgiving, and filled with compassion. Ordinary love often depends on expectation, attachment, or personal comfort, but divine love gives without asking for anything in return. It does not become weak in difficulty, and it does not disappear when situations change. It flows from the heart as kindness, patience, service, and peace.
In spiritual life, love is not only an emotion. It is the very nature of the soul. When the heart is filled with love, thoughts become pure, words become gentle, and actions become helpful. A person who truly loves does not wish to hurt anyone. Such a person becomes a source of comfort for family, society, and all living beings.
Love Divine teaches that God is best understood through love. Many people search for God through rituals, scriptures, pilgrimages, and prayers, but without love, all spiritual practices remain incomplete. A prayer offered without love becomes dry, while even a small act done with love becomes sacred. The Divine responds to sincerity, not outer show.
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba always emphasized that love is the foundation of human life. His message of love all, serve all and help ever, hurt never is a practical guide for every devotee. Love should not remain only in the heart as feeling. It must become visible through service, forgiveness, humility, and compassion.
Love Divine also reminds us that true love does not discriminate. It does not ask about caste, religion, language, wealth, status, or nationality before helping someone. It sees the same divine spark in every heart. When this vision grows, hatred becomes weaker, pride becomes smaller, and unity becomes natural.
Selfless service is one of the clearest expressions of divine love. Feeding the hungry, helping the sick, teaching children, comforting the sad, respecting elders, and supporting those in need are all forms of worship when done with pure feeling. Service removes ego and expands the heart. It teaches us that life is not meant only for personal happiness, but also for the welfare of others.
Love Divine becomes meaningful when it is practiced in daily life. It is easy to speak about love in prayer halls, but the real test comes at home, at work, and in difficult relationships. Can we speak gently when we are irritated? Can we forgive when someone hurts us? Can we help without expecting praise? These moments reveal the depth of our love.
Divine love also gives strength. Some people think love is weakness, but true love is full of courage. It gives the strength to be patient, to forgive, to serve, and to stand for truth without hatred. A loving heart can face challenges with peace because it is connected to God’s grace.
Love Divine purifies the mind by reducing negative qualities. Anger, jealousy, pride, selfishness, and fear cannot remain strong in a heart filled with pure love. Just as light removes darkness, love removes inner negativity. The more we love selflessly, the more peaceful and joyful we become from within.
The path of devotion becomes beautiful when love guides it. Bhajan sung with love becomes powerful. Prayer offered with love becomes sincere. Meditation done with love becomes peaceful. Service performed with love becomes divine. Every spiritual practice finds its real life through love.
Love Divine finally reminds us that the greatest offering to God is a transformed heart. Flowers may fade, lamps may go out, and words may be forgotten, but a loving action leaves a lasting blessing. When the heart becomes kind and the hands become ready to serve, life itself becomes worship.
In the end, divine love is the light that makes human life sacred. It gives meaning to relationships, purity to service, strength to faith, and peace to the soul. When we live with selfless love, we come closer to God and become instruments of His grace. A life filled with love becomes a life filled with truth, beauty, and divine blessing.
