Eesavasyopanishad (Ishopanishad)

ōṃ pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇamidaṃ ।
pūrṇātpūrṇamudachyatē ।
pūrṇasya pūrṇamādāya ।
pūrṇamēvāvaśiṣyatē ॥

That (Supreme Reality) is complete and perfect. This (manifest universe) is also complete and perfect. From the complete emerges the complete. Even after taking the complete from the complete, the complete alone remains.

ōṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ॥

Om. May there be peace, peace, and peace.

ōṃ īśāvāsyamidaṃ sarvaṃ yatkiñcha jagatyāṃ jagat ।
tēna tyaktēna bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasyasviddhanam ॥ 1 ॥

All this — whatever exists in this changing universe — is pervaded by the Divine Lord. Therefore, enjoy and live with a spirit of renunciation. Do not covet anyone’s wealth.

kurvannevēha karmāṇi jijīviṣēcchataṃ samāḥ ।
ēvaṃ tvayi nānyathētō’sti na karma lipyatē narē ॥ 2 ॥

By performing one’s duties in this world, one should desire to live for a hundred years. In this way, action does not bind a person, and there is no other path.

asuryā nāma tē lōkā andhēna tamasāvṛtāḥ ।
tāṃstē prētyābhigacchanti yē kē chātmahānō janāḥ ॥ 3 ॥

Those worlds covered by deep darkness belong to those who neglect the Self. After leaving this life, those who destroy their own spiritual awareness enter into such states.

anējadēkaṃ manasō javīyō nainaddēvā āpnuvanpūrvamarṣat ।
taddhāvato’nyānatvēti tiṣṭhattasminnapō māta̍riśvā dadhāti ॥ 4 ॥

The One Reality is unmoving yet swifter than the mind. Even the senses cannot reach It, for It is always ahead of them. Though standing still, It surpasses all that runs. Through It, the cosmic forces sustain all beings.

tadējati tannaijati taddūrē tadvantikē ।
tadantarasya sarvasya tadu sarvasyāsya bāhyataḥ ॥ 5 ॥

It moves and It does not move. It is far away and yet very near. It exists within everything and also beyond everything.

yastu sarvāṇi bhūtānyātmanyēvānupaśyati ।
sarvabhūtēṣu chātmānaṃ tatō na vijugupsatē ॥ 6 ॥

One who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings never turns away from anyone or anything.

yasminsarvāṇi bhūtānyātmaivābhūdvijānataḥ ।
tatra kō mōhaḥ kaḥ śōkaḥ ēkatvamanupaśyataḥ ॥ 7 ॥

For one who realizes that all beings have become the Self, where is delusion and where is sorrow? Such a person sees unity everywhere.

sa paryagācchukramakāyamavraṇamasnāviraṃ śuddhamapāpaviddham ।
kavirmanīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūryāthātathyatō’rthān vyadadhācchāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ ॥ 8 ॥

The Supreme Self is radiant, without body, without imperfection, pure and untouched by sin. It is all-knowing, self-existent, and has arranged all things according to eternal truth.

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti yē’vidyāmupāsatē ।
tatō bhūya iva tē tamō ya u vidyāyāṃ ratāḥ ॥ 9 ॥

Those who are devoted only to ignorance enter into darkness. But those who are attached only to limited knowledge also enter into a deeper darkness.

anyadēvāhurvidyayā’nyadāhuravidyayā ।
iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ yē nastadvichachakṣirē ॥ 10 ॥

The wise have taught that knowledge and ignorance lead to different results. This is what we have heard from those who have explained this truth.

vidyāṃ chāvidyāṃ cha yastadvēdōbhayaṃ saha ।
avidyayā mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā vidyayāmṛtamaśnutē ॥ 11 ॥

One who understands both knowledge and ignorance together crosses beyond death through worldly understanding and attains immortality through spiritual knowledge.

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti yē’sambhūtimupāsatē ।
tatō bhūya iva tē tamō ya u sambhūtyāṃ ratāḥ ॥ 12 ॥

Those who worship only the unmanifest enter darkness, and those who become attached only to the manifest also enter darkness.

anyadēvāhuḥ sambhavādanyadāhurasambhavāt ।
iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ yē nastadvichachakṣirē ॥ 13 ॥

The wise have explained that the manifest and unmanifest each have their own distinct purposes and effects.

sambhūtiṃ cha vināśaṃ cha yastadvēdōbhayaṃ saha ।
vināśēna mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā sambhūtyāmṛtamaśnutē ॥ 14 ॥

One who understands both creation and dissolution together transcends death through the knowledge of change and attains immortality through the knowledge of the eternal.

hiraṇmayēna pātrēṇa satyasyāpihitaṃ mukham ।
tatvaṃ pūṣannapāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭayē ॥ 15 ॥

The face of Truth is covered by a golden veil. O Pūṣan, remove this covering so that I, devoted to Truth, may behold the Divine Reality.

pūṣannēkarṣē yama sūrya prājāpatya ।
vyūha raśmīn samūha ।
tējō yattē rūpaṃ kalyāṇatamaṃ tattē paśyāmi ।
yō’sāvasau puruṣaḥ sō’hamasmi ॥ 16 ॥

O Nourisher, solitary Seer, controller of all, radiant Sun, remove Your rays and reveal Your most auspicious form. The Being who is there in the Sun — that Being am I.

vāyuranilamamṛtamathēdaṃ bhasmāntaṃ śarīram ।
ōṃ kratō smara kṛtaṃ smara kratō smara kṛtaṃ smara ॥ 17 ॥

May the life-force merge into the immortal cosmic energy. May this body return to ashes. O mind, remember your deeds; remember your purpose.

agnē naya supathā rāyē asmān viśvāni dēva vayunāni vidvān ।
yuyōdhyasmajjuhurāṇamēnō bhūyiṣṭhāṃ tē namauktiṃ vidhēma ॥ 18 ॥

O Agni, lead us by the righteous path toward prosperity. Remove our wrongdoings and guide us to the Divine. We offer our deepest salutations to You.

ōṃ pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇamidaṃ ।
pūrṇātpūrṇamudachyatē ।
pūrṇasya pūrṇamādāya ।
pūrṇamēvāvaśiṣyatē ॥

That Supreme Reality is complete. This universe is complete. From completeness comes completeness. Even after completeness is taken from completeness, completeness alone remains.

ōṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ॥

Om. May there be peace, peace, and peace.
