namaḥ parāyāvitathānubhūtayē
guṇatrayābhāsanimittabandhavē ।
adṛṣṭadhāmnē guṇatattvabuddhibhiḥ
nivṛttamānāya dadhē svayambhuvē ॥ 1 ॥
I offer my respectful obeisances to the Supreme Lord, whose
existence and realization are beyond material illusion, who appears
to be bound by the three modes of material nature, yet whose true
abode is beyond their perception. I offer my worship to the
self-existent Lord who is free from material identification.
na yasya sakhyaṃ puruṣō’vaiti sakhyuḥ
sakhā vasansaṃvasataḥ purē’smin ।
guṇō yathā guṇinō vyaktadṛṣṭēḥ
tasmai mahēśāya namaskarōmi ॥ 2 ॥
I offer my obeisances to the Supreme Lord, who dwells within the
same body as the individual soul like an eternal friend, yet whose
true nature is not understood by the soul. Just as a quality may be
perceived but the possessor of that quality remains beyond ordinary
sight, so the Supreme Lord remains beyond material perception.
dēhō’savō’kṣā manavō bhūtamātrā
nātmānamanyaṃ cha viduḥ paraṃ yat ।
sarvaṃ pumān vēda guṇāṃścha tajjñō
na vēda sarvajñamanantamīḍē ॥ 3 ॥
The body, life airs, senses, mind and material elements do not know
the Supreme Self or the higher spiritual reality. The individual
person may know the various material qualities and objects, but
cannot fully know the all-knowing and unlimited Supreme Lord.
Therefore, I praise that eternal Lord.
yadōparāmō manasō nāmarūpa-
rūpasya dṛṣṭasmṛtisapramōṣāt ।
ya īyatē kēvalayā svasaṃsthayā
haṃsāya tasmai śuchisadmanē namaḥ ॥ 4 ॥
When the mind becomes completely withdrawn from names, forms,
perceptions and memories, the Supreme Reality is experienced in
its own pure nature. I offer my obeisances to that pure Lord,
known as Haṃsa, who is realized through transcendental
consciousness.
manīṣiṇō’ntarhadi sannivēśitaṃ
svaśaktibhirnavabhiścha trivṛdbhiḥ ।
vahniṃ yathā dāruṇi pāñchadaśyaṃ
manīṣayā niṣkarṣanti gūḍham ॥ 5 ॥
The wise seek and realize the Supreme Lord dwelling within the
heart through His spiritual energies and the various manifestations
of material nature. Just as fire hidden within wood is brought forth
through careful effort, the hidden presence of the Lord is revealed
through spiritual understanding and contemplation.
sa vai mamāśēṣaviśēṣamāyā
niṣēdhanivāṇasukhānubhūtiḥ ।
sa sarvanāmā sa cha viśvarūpaḥ
prasīdatāmaniruktātmaśaktiḥ ॥ 6 ॥
May that Supreme Lord, whose realization brings freedom from the
countless manifestations of material illusion and grants the
highest spiritual bliss, be pleased with me. He is known by all
names and possesses the universal form, while His essential
spiritual power remains beyond complete verbal description.
yadyanniruktaṃ vachasā nirūpitaṃ
dhiyā’kṣabhirvā manasā vōta yasya ।
mā bhūtsvarūpaṃ guṇarūpaṃ hi tattat
sa vai guṇāpāyavisargalakṣaṇaḥ ॥ 7 ॥
Whatever is described through speech, conceived by the intellect,
perceived through the senses or imagined by the mind cannot fully
represent the Supreme Lord’s true nature. Such descriptions are
limited by material qualities, whereas the Lord is beyond the
appearance and dissolution of those qualities.
yasmin yatō yēna cha yasya yasmai
yadyō yathā kurūtē kāryatē cha ।
parāvarēṣāṃ paramaṃ prāk prasiddhaṃ
tadbrahma taddhēturananyadēkam ॥ 8 ॥
He is the Supreme Reality from whom everything arises, through
whom everything is accomplished, for whom everything exists, and
by whom all actions are ultimately performed. He is the one
Supreme Brahman, the original cause of both the higher and lower
manifestations of existence.
yachChaktayō vadatāṃ vāditāṃ vai
vivādasaṃvādabhuvō bhavanti ।
kurvanti chaiṣāṃ muhurātmamōhaṃ
tasmai namō’nantaguṇāya bhūmnē ॥ 9 ॥
I offer my obeisances to the unlimited Supreme Lord, whose energies
become the basis of speech, debate, discussion and dialogue among
people. Yet these very energies can repeatedly lead those who are
attached to argument into confusion about their true spiritual
identity.
astīti nāstīti cha vastuniṣṭhayōḥ
ēkasthayōrbhinnaviruddhadharmayōḥ ।
avēkṣitaṃ kiṃ cha na yōgasāṅkhyayōḥ
samaṃ paraṃ hyanukūlaṃ bṛhattat ॥ 10 ॥
The Supreme Truth is beyond conflicting conclusions such as
existence and non-existence when they are understood only through
limited material reasoning. The highest Reality is equally
accessible through the paths of Yoga and Sāṅkhya when properly
understood, and it is vast, supreme and all-pervading.
yō’nugahārthaṃ bhajatāṃ pādamūlamanāmarūpō bhagavānanantaḥ ।
nāmāni rūpāṇi cha janmakarmabhirbhējē sa mahyaṃ paramaḥ prasīdatu ॥ 11 ॥
May the unlimited Supreme Lord, who is beyond material name and
form, be pleased with me. Out of compassion for His devotees, He
manifests Himself through various names and forms according to
His divine appearances and activities.
yaḥ prākṛtairjñānapathairjanānāṃ
yathāśayaṃ dēhagatō vibhāti ।
yathānilaḥ pārthivamāśritō guṇaṃ
sa īśvarō mē kurutānmanōratham ॥ 12 ॥
The Supreme Lord, who dwells within the bodies of all beings,
appears to each person according to their level of understanding
and spiritual disposition, just as air takes on the qualities of
the material objects through which it moves. May that Supreme
Lord fulfill my spiritual aspiration.
॥ iti haṃsaguhyastōtraṃ sampūrṇam ॥
Thus ends the sacred Haṃsa Guhya Stotra.
