Sankhya Darshan is one of the six classical schools of Indian philosophy. It is traditionally associated with Maharishi Kapila and focuses on understanding the nature of the Self, the material world, and the causes of human suffering.
Sankhya philosophy explains reality mainly through two fundamental principles: Purusha and Prakriti. Purusha is the conscious Self, while Prakriti is the material nature from which the mind, senses, and physical world develop. Sankhya further explains the universe through different categories and the three Gunas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.
According to Sankhya, suffering continues when a person does not understand the difference between the conscious Self and material nature. Through true knowledge and discrimination, a person can recognize the Self as separate from Prakriti and become free from suffering and bondage.
Sankhya Darshan has greatly influenced Indian spiritual thought, especially Yoga philosophy. Its systematic analysis of consciousness, matter, mind, and the Gunas makes it an important part of India’s philosophical tradition.
The main message of Sankhya Darshan is that true knowledge of the Self and understanding the difference between Purusha and Prakriti can lead a person toward freedom, peace, and liberation.
