Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 16

na dhyātaṃ padamīśvarasya vidhivatsaṃsāravichChittayē
svargadvārakapāṭapāṭanapaṭurdharmō’pi nōpārjitaḥ ।
nārīpīnapayōdharōruyugalā svapnē’pi nāliṅgitaṃ
mātuḥ kēvalamēva yauvanavanachChēdē kuṭhārā vayam ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
We did not meditate properly upon the feet of the Lord to break the bonds of worldly existence, nor did we acquire the righteous conduct capable of opening the gates of heaven. We did not even embrace a woman of beauty in our dreams. Thus, we have merely become like an axe cutting down the forest of our mother’s youth. The verse expresses deep regret over a life that has passed without attaining its intended purposes.

jalpanti sārdhamanyēna paśyantyanyaṃ savibhramāḥ ।
hṛdayē chintayantyanyaṃ na strīṇāmēkatō ratiḥ ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
Describing the fickleness of the mind, the verse says that a woman may speak with one person, look with attraction toward another, and think of someone else in her heart; thus, her affection may not remain fixed upon one person.

yō mōhānmanyatē mūḍhō raktēyaṃ mayi kāminī ।
sa tasyā vaśagō bhūtvā nṛtyēt krīḍāśakuntavat ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
The foolish person who, out of delusion, thinks that a woman is deeply attached to him soon becomes subject to her influence and dances according to her wishes, like a puppet or a trained creature in a game.

kō’rthānprāpya na garvitō viṣayiṇaḥ kasyāpadō’staṃ gatāḥ
strībhiḥ kasya na khaṇḍitaṃ bhuvi manaḥ kō nāma rājapriyaḥ ।
kaḥ kālasya na gōcharatvamagamat kō’rthī gatō gauravaṃ
kō vā durjanadurgamēṣu patitaḥ kṣēmēṇa yātaḥ pathi ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
What worldly person has not become proud upon gaining wealth? Whose troubles have never come to an end? Whose mind has never been disturbed by attachment to women? Who among those favored by kings has remained permanently secure? Who has escaped the passage of time? What seeker of wealth has never suffered loss of dignity? And who, having entered the difficult path of wicked people, has safely passed through it?

na nirmitō na chaiva na dṛṣṭapūrvō
na śrūyatē hēmamayaḥ kuraṅgaḥ ।
tathā’pi tṛṣṇā raghunandanasya
vināśakālē viparītabuddhiḥ ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
A golden deer had never been created, seen, or even heard of before. Yet Raghunandana, Lord Rama, developed a desire to possess it. When destruction approaches, the intellect becomes clouded and acts contrary to wisdom.

guṇairuttamatāṃ yāti nōchchairāsanasaṃsthitāḥ ।
prāsādaśikharasthō’pi kākaḥ kiṃ garuḍāyatē ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
A person attains greatness through virtues, not merely by sitting upon a high seat. Does a crow become Garuda merely by sitting upon the top of a palace?

guṇāḥ sarvatra pūjyantē na mahatyō’pi sampadaḥ ।
pūrṇēnduḥ kiṃ tathā vandyō niṣkalaṅkō yathā kṛśaḥ ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
Virtues are respected everywhere; great wealth alone does not earn true honor. Is the full moon necessarily as revered as the smaller moon that is completely free from blemish?

parairuktaguṇō yastu nirguṇō’pi guṇī bhavēt ।
indrō’pi laghutāṃ yāti svayaṃ prakhyāpitairguṇaiḥ ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
Even a person without great virtues may gain honor when others speak of his qualities. Conversely, even one as exalted as Indra appears diminished when he publicly proclaims his own virtues.

vivēkinamanuprāptā guṇā yānti manōjñatām ।
sutarāṃ ratnamābhāti chāmīkaraniyōjitam ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
Virtues become especially pleasing and admirable when possessed by a discerning person. Just as a precious gem shines even more beautifully when set in gold, good qualities gain greater brilliance in a worthy person.

guṇaiḥ sarvajñatulyō’pi sīdatyēkō nirāśrayaḥ ।
anarghyamapi māṇikyaṃ hēmāśrayamapēkṣatē ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
Even a person possessing virtues comparable to those of an all-knowing sage may suffer when he has no support. Even a priceless ruby requires the support of gold to display its beauty and value properly.

atiklēśēna yaddravyamatilōbhēna yatsukham ।
śatrūṇāṃ praṇipātēna tē hyarthā mā bhavantu mē ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
May I never desire wealth obtained through excessive suffering or happiness gained through greed and by bowing before enemies.

kiṃ tayā kriyatē lakṣmyā yā vadhūriva kēvalā ।
yā tu vēśyēva sāmānyā pathikairapi bhujyatē ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
What is the value of wealth that remains exclusively confined like a wife in one household? And what is the value of wealth that, like a prostitute, is available indiscriminately to everyone? The verse reflects upon the proper nature and use of prosperity.

dhanēṣu jīvitavyēṣu strīṣu chāhārakarmasu ।
atṛptāḥ prāṇinaḥ sarvē yātā yāsyanti yānti cha ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
All living beings remain unsatisfied with wealth, life, sensual pleasures, food, and worldly activities. Those who have gone, those who are going, and those who will go remain bound by this continuing dissatisfaction.

kṣīyantē sarvadānāni yajñahōmabalikriyāḥ ।
na kṣīyatē pātradānamabhayaṃ sarvadēhinām ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
All other forms of charity, sacrifices, offerings, and ritual acts may eventually come to an end, but charity given to a worthy recipient and the gift of fearlessness to all living beings never perish.

tṛṇaṃ laghu tṛṇāttūlaṃ tūlādapi cha yāchakaḥ ।
vāyunā kiṃ na nītō’sau māmayaṃ yāchayiṣyati ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
Grass is light, cotton is lighter than grass, and a beggar is described as lighter still. Why does the wind not carry him away? Why does he come to ask from me? The verse humorously satirizes excessive dependence through begging.

varaṃ prāṇaparityāgō mānabhaṅgēna jīvanāt ।
prāṇatyāgē kṣaṇaṃ duḥkhaṃ mānabhaṅgē dinē dinē ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
It is considered better to give up one’s life than to live after losing one’s dignity. The pain of giving up life lasts only for a moment, whereas the pain of humiliation may be felt day after day.

priyavākyapradānēna sarvē tuṣyanti jantavaḥ ।
tasmāttadēva vaktavyaṃ vachanē kā daridratā ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
All living beings are pleased by kind and pleasant words. Therefore, one should speak sweetly and graciously. Since kind words cost nothing, why should one be miserly with speech?

saṃsārakaṭuvṛkṣasya dvē phalē’mṛtōpamē ।
subhāṣitaṃ cha susvādu saṅgatiḥ sajjanē janē ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
The bitter tree of worldly existence bears two fruits that are like nectar: wise and pleasant speech, and the company of virtuous people.

janma janma yadabhyastaṃ dānamadhyayanaṃ tapaḥ ।
tēnaivā’bhyāsayōgēna dēhī chābhyasyatē punaḥ ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
Whatever charity, study, and austerity a person practices across successive births, those impressions continue through the power of repeated practice and are manifested again in future lives.

pustakasthā tu yā vidyā parahastagataṃ dhanam ।
kāryakālē samutpannē na sā vidyā na taddhanam ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning:
Knowledge that merely remains in a book and wealth that is in another person’s hands are of no practical use when needed. Knowledge that cannot be applied when required is not truly useful knowledge, and wealth held by another cannot serve as one’s own wealth.
