Psychological Changes
by Swami Sivananda
He was aware, during this first period of illumination and during the months which followed, of a number of physiological changes within himself. The most striking was what seemed a rearrangement of molecule structure in his brain or the opening up of new cell-territory there. Ceaselessly, day and night, he was conscious of this work going on. It seemed as though a kind of electrical drill was boring out new cellular thought-channels. This phenomenon is strong proof of Bucke’s theory that cosmic consciousness is a natural faculty of man, for it gives evidence that the brain-cells which are connected with this faculty are already present in man, although inactive or non-functioning in the majority of human beings at the present time.
Another important change was felt in his spinal column. The whole spine seemed turned into iron for several months, so that, when he sat to meditate on God, he felt anchored forever, able to sit in one place eternally without motion or consciousness of any bodily function. At times an influx of superhuman strength invaded him and he felt that he was carrying the whole universe on his shoulders. The elixir of life, the nectar of immortality, he felt flowing in his veins as an actual, tangible force. It seemed like a quicksilver or a sort of electrical, fluid light throughout his body.
Understanding the Inner Journey of Psychological Changes
Psychological changes are a natural part of every person’s spiritual and personal growth. As individuals progress through different stages of life, their thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and responses gradually transform. These changes are influenced by experience, self-discipline, meditation, and spiritual understanding. According to the teachings of Swami Sivananda, the mind is not fixed; it can be purified, strengthened, and elevated through sincere practice. When the mind becomes calm and disciplined, psychological changes begin to reflect higher awareness, inner peace, and emotional balance.
The process of psychological changes is closely connected with self-observation. A seeker who regularly examines thoughts and actions becomes more aware of negative habits such as anger, fear, jealousy, and attachment. Instead of reacting impulsively, the individual learns to respond with patience and wisdom. This transformation does not happen overnight but develops gradually through consistent spiritual practice, ethical living, and devotion. Every positive thought contributes to a healthier and more peaceful state of mind.
Meditation, prayer, and selfless service play an important role in bringing about psychological changes. These practices help reduce mental restlessness and encourage qualities such as compassion, humility, forgiveness, and contentment. As the heart becomes pure, the mind naturally reflects clarity and confidence. Swami Sivananda emphasized that controlling the mind is the foundation of spiritual life because a disciplined mind becomes a powerful instrument for realizing higher truth.
Another important aspect of psychological changes is the development of emotional resilience. Life presents many challenges, but spiritual wisdom teaches that difficulties should be viewed as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. A calm and balanced mind can face success and failure with equal understanding. This inner stability allows a seeker to remain peaceful even in changing circumstances and to cultivate lasting happiness that is independent of external conditions.
The study of spiritual literature also supports psychological changes by inspiring noble thinking and positive action. Reading uplifting teachings encourages the mind to move away from selfish desires and toward universal love and self-realization. Through regular reflection, individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and develop the courage to overcome weaknesses with determination and faith.
