Yoga of Surrender-ONE
by Swami Sivananda
1. Self-surrender is a direct, valid mode of God-realisation.
2. Self-surrender is the easier and surer means of God-realisation.
3. Self-surrender is a safe and sure means of God-realisation.
4. Nothing can be achieved without surrender to the Lord.
THE TECHNIQUE
5. Surrender yourself and all your belongings at the feet of the Supreme. Live a dedicated life of Godliness.
6. Think that nothing is yours and everything belongs to God. This is surrender to God.
7. Give the power of attorney to God. Let Him do whatever He wants. You will have no worry or anxiety. You will be peaceful.
8. Surrender contains intense love and faith.
9. Surrender must be complete. You cannot have any part of yours.
10. The entire being, mind, intellect, Chitta and egoism, must be surrendered to the Lord.
11. Desire and egoism are two great obstacles to self-surrender.
12. If the mind says: I am Thine, my Lord; if the ego says: I must become a High Court Judge; if the intellect says: I am a great devotee; and if the Chitta says: I must attain Siddhis; this will not constitute perfect, unreserved surrender. This is only cheating the Lord, the inner ruler and witness.
13. After surrendering to the Lord, you should not grumble, fret and fume, when any trouble comes. You should not complain to the Lord: O Lord, You have no eyes. You have no compassion. If you complain then there is no meaning in your surrender.
THE FRUITS OF SURRENDER
14. Through surrender the devotee immerses himself into the eternal essence.
15. You can endear yourself unto the Lord only by self-surrender.
16. The more the surrender the more the grace.
17. The degree of grace is in direct proportion to the degree of surrender.
18. You do not lose anything in surrendering to the Lord. You become one with the Lord by surrendering to the Lord. You possess all the Aisvaryas of the Lord. You attain fullness.
MANTRA FOR SURRENDER
19. Sri Krishna Saranam Mama, Sri Krishnah Saranam Mama, Harih Saranam, I am Thine, all is Thine, Thy Will be done my Lord, are formulas for effecting self-surrender.
20. Surrender comes out of intense love and unshakable faith in God.
21. Intense Bhakti can only be attained by the Grace of God.
22. This is Prapatti Yoga or the Yoga of self-surrender.
Yoga of Surrender-ONE – Devotion, Trust, and Inner Freedom
Yoga of Surrender-ONE is a sacred path that teaches the seeker how to offer the ego, desires, fears, actions, and results to the Divine. Surrender does not mean weakness or laziness. It means doing one’s duty sincerely while giving up the burden of pride, anxiety, and selfish expectation. When the heart learns to surrender, life becomes lighter, calmer, and more meaningful.
The ordinary mind wants to control everything. It wants comfort without difficulty, success without failure, praise without criticism, and certainty without change. But life does not always obey personal desire. When the ego resists every situation, suffering increases. Surrender teaches the seeker to act wisely, accept humbly, and trust a higher wisdom.
Yoga of Surrender-ONE begins with humility. The ego says, “I am the doer, I am the owner, I am the controller.” Humility says, “I will do my best, but the final result belongs to the Divine.” This attitude does not reduce effort. In fact, it purifies effort because action is performed with sincerity rather than pride.
Surrender is closely connected with faith. A person may not understand why certain events happen, why difficulties arise, or why prayers are answered differently from expectation. Faith gives strength to continue. It reminds the seeker that human understanding is limited and that grace may work silently behind visible circumstances.
Yoga of Surrender-ONE also teaches freedom from excessive worry. Worry comes when the mind thinks that everything depends only on personal power. Surrender does not mean avoiding responsibility. It means doing what is right, preparing carefully, speaking truthfully, serving sincerely, and then leaving the result to the Divine will.
Devotion gives sweetness to surrender. Prayer, mantra repetition, worship, and remembrance of God soften the heart. When love for the Divine grows, the mind becomes less harsh and less restless. The seeker no longer feels alone in struggle. Devotion turns surrender from an idea into a living experience.
The biggest obstacle is ego. Ego wants recognition, control, superiority, and personal importance. It becomes hurt when ignored, angry when opposed, and proud when praised. Surrender slowly weakens this false centre. Success, failure, praise, blame, joy, and sorrow are offered to the Divine, and the heart becomes simpler.
Yoga of Surrender-ONE becomes practical in daily life. Begin the day with prayer. Offer your work before starting it. Remember the Divine when anxiety rises. Repeat the mantra during difficulty. Accept success with gratitude and failure with patience. Before sleep, offer the whole day, including mistakes, efforts, joys, and struggles.
This path also helps relationships. Many conflicts arise because people expect others to behave exactly according to their wishes. Surrender makes the heart less demanding and more compassionate. One still uses discrimination and sets healthy boundaries, but the need to control everyone becomes weaker. Forgiveness becomes easier when ego becomes softer.
Surrender should not become passivity. A surrendered seeker does not sit idle and call it spirituality. They work, serve, study, meditate, and make wise decisions. The difference is inner attitude. Work becomes worship. Duty becomes offering. Results are accepted with balance. This is active surrender, not escape.
Yoga of Surrender-ONE requires self-examination. Ask yourself: Am I truly surrendering, or am I avoiding effort? Am I offering actions to the Divine, or secretly demanding a particular result? Am I accepting life with faith, or merely suppressing pain? Honest questioning protects surrender from self-deception and keeps the path pure.
The surrendered heart becomes peaceful because it no longer carries life alone. This does not mean that pain disappears completely. Rather, pain is faced with greater strength. The seeker begins to ask, “What can I learn from this? How can I grow through this? How can I remain close to the Divine even now?” Such an attitude transforms difficulty into practice.
Surrender and wisdom support each other. Wisdom shows that the ego is limited, unstable, and dependent. Surrender allows the heart to accept this truth lovingly. As personal will becomes purified, it begins to align with divine will. Then life becomes less selfish, less anxious, and more sacred.
In the end, Yoga of Surrender-ONE is the path of offering the ego into the hands of the Divine with faith, devotion, humility, and courage. Through prayer, selfless action, trust, patience, remembrance, and sincere effort, the seeker becomes free from pride and anxiety. Surrender brings peace to the mind, purity to the heart, and steady progress toward spiritual freedom.
