Waste Not Precious Life
You do not know even a single Sloka of the Gita or the Upanishads. You do not know how to sit on Padmasana. You do not know the efficacy of Mantra-Kirtana. You do not know anything about self-analysis, mind-control, self-restraint, concentration and introspection. You have lived in vain! You have wasted this precious life. Hotels, restaurants, cine ma houses, are your abodes of Immortality or Vaikuntha Dhama. Really you are leading a miserable life. If you can talk something on dry politics, you think you are a great hero!
Time is fleeting. The night is wasted in sleep and pleasure. The day is wasted in idle talk, amassing money and maintenance of the family. Days, months and years are rolling away. Hairs have become grey. Teeth have fallen. You are attached to perishable objects through Moha. Tell me, friends, how long you will be a slave to the fleeting things of the world? How long are you going to repeat the same sensual enjoyments? How long do you wish to worship mammon and woman? When will you find time to meditate on the Lord and to do Virtuous deeds? Think and reflect.
This world of names and forms is constantly changing. Seas dry up and vast sandy deserts come in to being in their places. Elevations become depressions and depressions become elevations. Sand becomes stone and stone becomes sand. Blocks of stones become lime and lime becomes dust. Forests become model towns and cities become deserted places. Grass becomes blood, blood becomes milk, milk again becomes blood. Blood becomes flesh. A young man becomes an old man and a beautiful girl becomes an ugly woman. The fatty man becomes thin and a lean girl a fatty woman. A Zamindar becomes a beggar and a beggar becomes a Zamindar. At the back of these ever changing objects there is the changeless, eternal, Immortal Brahman or the Supreme Self. The Ultimate Principle or Atman, fearless, timeless, endless and beginning less, shines eternally behind the names and forms. He who realises this Brahman attains Immortality, Freedom and Eternal Peace!
Kings and lords will pass away. This world will pass away with all its occupants. The sun, moon and stars will pass away. All joys and sorrows will pass away. Wife, children, wealth, property will pass away. The five elements, the earth and heaven will pass away. Only Brahman, the Pure Satchidananda, will shine eternally.
The leaves of life are falling off. Youth is fa ding. The days are rolling on. Time, the destroyer, lays his icy hands on the whole world. Existence in this world is as momentary as a bubble or lightning!
O Man! Wealth, vehicles, sons, women, dominions, property, are worthless! They are all perishable. Seek the Lotus-feet of the Lord and attain Immortality, Eternal Bliss and Supreme Peace!
If you do not meditate on the Lord, you will be thrown in lower births. If you do not know Him, the cycle of births and deaths will not come to an end. If you do not think of Him, you will take countless births as germs and insects. Exert and realise Him. Then all troubles will terminate.
Waste Not Precious Life – Time, Discipline, and the Higher Purpose of Human Birth
Waste Not Precious Life is a powerful reminder that human birth is rare, valuable, and full of spiritual possibility. Life should not be spent only in eating, sleeping, earning, worrying, arguing, enjoying, and running after temporary things. A human being has the capacity to think deeply, discriminate wisely, love selflessly, serve others, meditate, and realize the truth. To ignore this opportunity is a great loss.
Time moves silently and never returns. Childhood passes into youth, youth passes into old age, and old age moves toward death. Every day that is wasted in laziness, anger, jealousy, gossip, greed, and useless desire takes away a part of life. The wise person understands that time is more valuable than wealth, because lost money may return, but lost time never comes back.
Waste Not Precious Life means do not live carelessly. Many people postpone spiritual growth by saying, “I will practice later,” “I will meditate when I am free,” “I will change after fulfilling all desires.” But desires have no end. Responsibilities also continue in different forms. If the seeker keeps waiting for a perfect time, life may pass without real inner progress.
Human life becomes meaningful when it is guided by a higher aim. Earning money, maintaining family, studying, working, and fulfilling duties are necessary, but they should not become the only purpose. The heart needs wisdom, purity, devotion, peace, and self-knowledge. Without these, even outer success may feel empty.
Waste Not Precious Life also means do not become a slave of the senses. The senses run toward pleasure, taste, beauty, comfort, entertainment, and excitement. These may give temporary happiness, but they cannot give lasting peace. If the mind follows every desire, it becomes weak and restless. Self-control protects energy and gives strength.
A person wastes life when they live only for ego. The ego wants praise, recognition, control, superiority, and victory in argument. It becomes happy when appreciated and disturbed when criticized. Such dependence is inner slavery. A sincere seeker should reduce ego through humility, service, prayer, and self-examination.
Waste Not Precious Life by drowning in negative emotions. Anger burns peace. Jealousy poisons the heart. Greed increases restlessness. Pride blocks learning. Hatred darkens understanding. These states do not harm only others; they first disturb the one who carries them. A wise person does not allow the mind to become a storehouse of such impurities.
Spiritual practice should begin now. Even a little regular effort can change life. Daily prayer, mantra repetition, meditation, study of noble teachings, truthfulness, simple living, and selfless service purify the mind. A few sincere minutes every day are better than grand plans that are never practiced.
Waste Not Precious Life in useless comparison. Every person has their own path, duties, struggles, and capacity. Constant comparison creates pride or inferiority. Instead of looking at others with jealousy, look within with honesty. Ask: Am I becoming more peaceful? Am I reducing selfishness? Am I using my time wisely? Am I moving toward truth?
Good company is very important. If one spends time with careless, negative, indulgent, or selfish people, the mind slowly adopts the same tendencies. Satsang, noble books, uplifting conversations, and the company of sincere seekers strengthen discipline and faith. The mind becomes what it repeatedly associates with.
The body should also be used wisely. It is temporary, but it is a sacred instrument for duty, service, worship, meditation, and self-realization. Do not misuse it through excess, laziness, impurity, or harmful habits. Keep it healthy, clean, active, and disciplined. A strong and balanced body supports higher living.
Waste Not Precious Life by forgetting death. This does not mean living in fear. It means living with awareness. Death can come at any time, and no one carries possessions, status, fame, or arguments beyond this life. What remains valuable is purity of heart, good actions, devotion, wisdom, and the progress of the soul.
The seeker should practice discrimination. What is permanent and what is temporary? What is helpful and what is harmful? What leads to peace and what leads to bondage? These questions make life clear. Without discrimination, a person runs after every attraction and later suffers. With discrimination, life becomes purposeful.
Service gives noble direction to life. Helping others, speaking kindly, sharing knowledge, supporting the weak, comforting the troubled, and doing one’s duty sincerely make life meaningful. A selfish life becomes narrow, but a life of service expands the heart. Service done without ego becomes spiritual practice.
Meditation reveals the deeper purpose of life. When the seeker sits quietly and observes the body, breath, thoughts, emotions, and ego, they begin to see that all outer experiences are changing. The witnessing awareness remains steady. To know this awareness as the true self is the highest use of human birth.
In the end, Waste Not Precious Life is a call to wake up before time slips away. Do not waste life in laziness, sense slavery, ego, anger, comparison, and endless desire. Use this rare birth for truth, devotion, discipline, service, meditation, self-control, and self-knowledge. When life is lived with wisdom and higher purpose, it becomes a path to peace, freedom, and liberation.
