Chaturshringi Temple, Pune

Chaturshringi Temple

Chaturshringi Temple, located on Senapati Bapat Road in Pune, is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Chaturshringi, also known as Ambareshwari—regarded as the guardian deity of Pune.

“पुणे की पर्वतों पर विराजती हैं माता चतुरश्रृंगी — शक्ति, करुणा और आस्था का प्रतीक।”

― Chaturshringi Temple

Perched on a hillside, the temple stands approximately 90 feet tall and spans 125 feet wide, truly a symbol of faith and divine strength.

Mythological Significance & History

Legend speaks of a wealthy merchant, Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan, who was a devoted pilgrim to Goddess Saptashringi at Vani. In his old age, unable to travel, the goddess appeared in his dream and revealed her presence nearby in Pune. He excavated the site, discovered her swayambhu idol, and built the temple there.Constructed during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s reign, this temple has become one of Pune’s oldest spiritual landmarks

Significance of the Temple

Devotees believe that sincere worship here helps overcome obstacles and fulfill heartfelt desires. The temple sees its highest footfall during Navratri, featuring colorful celebrations including a silver chariot procession on Vijayadashami.

Architecture of the Temple

Design: Traditional Hindu architecture with a shikhara (spire) and mandapa (hall)—set across four elevated levels, reflecting the meaning of “Chaturshringi” (four-peak mountain).

Climb: A gentle ascent of approximately 100–200 steps leads to the main shrine, with resting spots and water fountains placed every few steps for ease.

Shrines & Grounds: The complex includes shrines dedicated to Durga, Ganesha, and eight miniature Ashtavinayaka idols placed on surrounding hillocks. Amenities such as rest areas, dharamshalas, community kitchens, and water facilities improve the pilgrimage experience.

How to Reach to Temple

By Road: Easily reachable via Senapati Bapat Road from anywhere in Pune.

By Rail: Approximately 4 km from Shivajinagar Railway Station, or 7 km from Pune Junction.

By Air: Around 12–14 km from Pune Airport.
Local transport such as buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and even select metro lines serve the area.
