Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 17

pustakapratyayādhītaṃ nādhītaṃ gurusannidhau ।
sabhāmadhyē na śōbhantē jāragarbhā iva striyaḥ ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
Knowledge acquired merely from books is not equal to knowledge learned in the presence of a teacher. Such learning does not shine in an assembly, just as women carrying the child of an illicit relationship are traditionally described as lacking social honor.

kṛtē pratikṛtiṃ kuryāddhiṃsanē pratihiṃsanam ।
tatra dōṣō na patati duṣṭē duṣṭaṃ samācharēt ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
One should respond according to the conduct of others, and resist one who commits violence. The verse states that responding firmly to a wicked person is not considered blameworthy.

yaddūraṃ yaddurārādhyaṃ yachcha dūrē vyavasthitam ।
tatsarvaṃ tapasā sādhyaṃ tapō hi duratikramam ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
Whatever is distant, difficult to attain, or situated far away can be accomplished through austerity. The power of disciplined spiritual effort is difficult to overcome.

lōbhaśchēdaguṇēna kiṃ piśunatā yadyasti kiṃ pātakaiḥ
satyaṃ chēttapasā cha kiṃ śuchi manō yadyasti tīrthēna kim ।
saujanyaṃ yadi kiṃ guṇaiḥ sumahimā yadyasti kiṃ maṇḍanaiḥ
sadvidyā yadi kiṃ dhanairapayaśō yadyasti kiṃ mṛtyunā ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
If one possesses freedom from greed, what need is there for wealth? If one does not engage in slander, why fear the many sins associated with it? If one is truthful, what need is there for austerity? If the mind is pure, what need is there for pilgrimage? If one is noble and kind, what need is there for additional qualities? If one possesses great honor, what need is there for ornaments? If one has true knowledge, what need is there for wealth? And if one has disgrace, what greater suffering could death bring?

pitā ratnākarō yasya lakṣmīryasya sahōdarā ।
śaṅkhō bhikṣāṭanaṃ kuryānna dattamupatiṣṭhatē ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
The conch has the ocean as its father and Lakshmi as its sister, yet it goes about seeking alms and does not receive everything. The verse teaches that noble origins and connections alone are not sufficient; fortune and action also matter.

aśaktastu bhavētsādhu-rbrahmachārī vā nirdhanaḥ ।
vyādhitō dēvabhaktaścha vṛddhā nārī pativratā ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
One who is unable to act may live as an ascetic, a poor person may follow celibacy, a sick person may devote himself to God, and an elderly woman may remain devoted to her husband. The verse suggests that spiritual practice and duties may take different forms according to one’s circumstances.

nā’nnōdakasamaṃ dānaṃ na tithirdvādaśī samā ।
na gāyatryāḥ parō mantrō na māturdaivataṃ param ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
There is no charity equal to giving food and water. There is no sacred date equal to Dvadashi. There is no mantra higher than the Gayatri Mantra, and there is no deity greater than one’s mother.

takṣakasya viṣaṃ dantē makṣikāyāstu mastakē ।
vṛśchikasya viṣaṃ puchChē sarvāṅgē durjanē viṣam ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
The poison of Takshaka lies in its fangs, that of a fly in its head, and that of a scorpion in its tail; but the poison of a wicked person is said to pervade his entire being and nature.

patyurājñāṃ vinā nārī hyupōṣya vratachāriṇī ।
āyuṣyaṃ haratē bhartuḥ sā nārī narakaṃ vrajēt ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
The verse states that a woman who undertakes fasts and religious vows without her husband’s permission harms her husband’s longevity and goes to hell. This reflects traditional ancient notions concerning household duties and religious observances.

na dānaiḥ śudhyatē nārī nōpavāsaśatairapi ।
na tīrthasēvayā tadvadbhartuḥ padōdakairyathā ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
The verse traditionally states that a woman does not attain purification through charity, hundreds of fasts, or pilgrimage as she does through the water associated with her husband’s feet. This reflects the ancient ideal of devoted household conduct.

pādaśēṣaṃ pītaśēṣaṃ sandhyāśēṣaṃ tathaiva cha ।
śvānamūtrasamaṃ tōyaṃ pītvā chāndrāyaṇaṃ charēt ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
Water remaining from washing the feet, water left after drinking, and water associated with improper observance of twilight rituals are traditionally described here as impure, comparable to dog’s urine; the verse prescribes the Chandrayana vow as an expiation for such impurity.

dānēna pāṇirna tu kaṅkaṇēna
snānēna śuddhirna tu chandanēna ।
mānēna tṛptirna tu bhōjanēna
jñānēna muktirna tu muṇḍanēna ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
The hand is beautified by giving, not by wearing a bracelet. Purification comes through bathing, not merely through applying sandalwood. True satisfaction comes through honor, not merely through food. Liberation comes through knowledge, not merely through shaving the head.

nāpitasya gṛhē kṣauraṃ pāṣāṇē gandhalēpanam ।
ātmarūpaṃ jalē paśyan śakrasyāpi śriyaṃ harēt ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
Shaving should properly be done at the barber’s place, and fragrant substances should be applied appropriately. One who recognizes his true form through self-awareness can surpass even the splendor of Indra. The verse emphasizes proper conduct and self-knowledge over mere external display.

sadyaḥ prajñāharā tuṇḍī sadyaḥ prajñākarī vachā ।
sadyaḥ śaktiharā nārī sadyaḥ śaktikaraṃ payaḥ ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
Certain foods are said to diminish understanding immediately, while vacha is traditionally regarded as enhancing intellect. Excessive sensual attachment is described as quickly weakening strength, whereas milk is regarded as strengthening.

parōpakaraṇaṃ yēṣāṃ jāgarti hṛdayē satām ।
naśyanti vipadastēṣāṃ sampadaḥ syuḥ padē padē ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
Those noble people whose hearts are always awakened by the desire to help others see their difficulties diminish, and prosperity comes to them at every step.

yadi rāmā yadi cha ramā yadi tanayō vinayaguṇōpētaḥ ।
tanayē tanayōtpattiḥ suravaranagarē kimādhikyam ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
If one has a virtuous and fortunate wife, a son endowed with humility and good qualities, and worthy descendants through him, what greater happiness could one desire—even in the city of the gods?

āhāranidrābhayamaithunāni
samāni chaitāni nṛṇāṃ paśūnām ।
jñānaṃ narāṇāmadhikō viśēṣō
jñānēna hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
Eating, sleeping, fear, and reproduction are common to both humans and animals. Knowledge is the distinctive quality that elevates human beings above animals. A person devoid of knowledge is therefore regarded as no better than an animal.

dānārthinō madhukarā yadi karṇatālairdūrīkṛtāḥ
dūrīkṛtāḥ karivarēṇa madāndhabuddhyā ।
tasyaiva gaṇḍayugmamaṇḍanahānirēṣā
bhṛṅgāḥ punarvikachapadmavanē vasanti ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
When bees seeking nectar are driven away by the ear-flapping of a proud, intoxicated elephant, the real loss is the elephant’s, for the bees that adorned its temples depart. The bees then return to the grove of blossoming lotuses.

rājā vēśyā yamaśchāgnistaskarō bālayāchakau ।
paraduḥkhaṃ na jānanti aṣṭamō grāmakaṇṭakaḥ ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
A king, a courtesan, Yama, fire, a thief, a child, and a beggar are described as not understanding the suffering of others; the eighth is the “thorn of the village,” one who causes trouble to the community. The verse refers to those whose nature or actions make them insensitive to the pain of others.

adhaḥ paśyasi kiṃ bālē patitaṃ tava kiṃ bhuvi ।
rē rē mūrkha na jānāsi gataṃ tāruṇyamauktikam ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning:
O young one, why are you looking down? Has something fallen upon the ground? O foolish one, do you not realize that the precious pearl of your youth has already passed away? The verse points to the fleeting nature of youth and time.

vyālāśrayāpi vikalāpi sakaṇṭakāpi
vakrāpi paṅkilabhavāpi durāsadāpi ।
gandhēna bandhurasi kētaki sarvajantā
rēkō guṇaḥ khalu nihanti samastadōṣān ॥ 21 ॥

English Meaning:
O Ketaki flower! You grow in places inhabited by serpents, you are full of thorns, you are crooked, you arise from muddy surroundings, and you are difficult to approach. Yet your fragrance makes you beloved by all. Truly, a single outstanding virtue can overcome many faults.
