Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 12

sānandaṃ sadanaṃ sutāstu sudhiyaḥ kāntā priyālāpinī
ichChāpūrtidhanaṃ svayōṣiti ratiḥ svājñāparāḥ sēvakāḥ ।
ātithyaṃ śivapūjanaṃ pratidinaṃ miṣṭānnapānaṃ gṛhē
sādhōḥ saṅgamupāsatē cha satataṃ dhanyō gṛhasthāśramaḥ ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
Blessed is the household where there is happiness, wise and virtuous children, a sweet-speaking wife, sufficient wealth to fulfill legitimate needs, loving marital relations, obedient servants, hospitality toward guests, daily worship of Lord Shiva, good food, and constant association with virtuous people.

ārtēṣu viprēṣu dayānvitaścha
yachChraddhayā svalpamupaiti dānam ।
anantapāramupaiti rājan
yaddīyatē tanna labhēddvijēbhyaḥ ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
O King, even a small gift offered with compassion and faith to distressed and deserving Brahmins is said to yield an immeasurable reward. What is given with sincere faith to a worthy recipient is never truly lost.

dākṣiṇyaṃ svajanē dayā parajanē śāṭhyaṃ sadā durjanē
prītiḥ sādhujanē smayaḥ khalajanē vidvajjanē chārjavam ।
śauryaṃ śatrujanē kṣamā gurujanē nārījanē dhūrtatā
itthaṃ yē puruṣā kalāsu kuśalāstēṣvēva lōkasthitiḥ ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
Generosity toward one’s own people, compassion toward others, prudence with the wicked, affection toward the virtuous, confidence before the malicious, simplicity before the learned, courage before enemies, forgiveness toward elders, and tact in dealing with women—those who know how to apply these qualities appropriately according to circumstances are skilled in worldly conduct.

hastau dānavivarjitau śrutipuṭau sārasvatadrōhiṇau
nētrē sādhuvilōkanēna rahitē pādau na tīrthaṃ gatau ।
anyāyārjitavittapūrṇamudaraṃ garvēṇa tuṅgaṃ śirō
rē rē jambuka muñcha muñcha sahasā nīchaṃ sunindyaṃ vapuḥ ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
Hands that have never given charity, ears that have never listened to wisdom, eyes that have never looked upon the virtuous, and feet that have never visited sacred places; a belly filled with ill-gotten wealth and a head raised in pride—such a base life is condemned as worthless. The verse urges one to abandon such an ignoble way of living.

yēṣāṃ śrīmadyaśōdāsutapadakamalē nāsti bhaktirnarāṇāṃ
yēṣāmābhīrakanyāpriyaguṇakathanē nānuraktā rasajñā ।
yēṣāṃ śrīkṛṣṇalīlālalitarasakathāsādarau naiva karṇau
dhik tān dhik tān dhigētān kathayati satataṃ kīrtanasthō mṛdaṅgaḥ ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who have no devotion to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, the son of Yashoda; whose speech does not delight in describing the virtues of the beloved Lord of the Gopis; and whose ears take no joy in hearing the enchanting stories of Krishna’s divine pastimes—such a life is lamentable. The mridanga accompanying devotional singing seems to proclaim this again and again.

patraṃ naiva yadā karīlaviṭapē dōṣō vasantasya kiṃ
nōlūkō’pyavalōkatē yadi divā sūryasya kiṃ dūṣaṇam ।
varṣā naiva patanti chātakamukhē mēghasya kiṃ dūṣaṇaṃ
yatpūrvaṃ vidhinā lalāṭalikhitaṃ tanmārjituṃ kaḥ kṣamaḥ ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
If the karila tree bears no leaves, what fault is there in spring? If an owl cannot see during the day, what fault is there in the Sun? If raindrops do not fall into the mouth of the chataka bird, what fault lies with the clouds? Who can erase what destiny has already written?

satsaṅgādbhavati hi sādhunāṃ khalānāṃ
sādhūnāṃ na hi khalasaṅgataḥ khalatvam ।
āmōdaṃ kusumabhavaṃ mṛdēva dhattē
mṛdgandhaṃ nahi kusumāni dhārayanti ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
Through association with the virtuous, even a wicked person may become good, whereas the company of the wicked does not necessarily corrupt the truly virtuous. Just as soil absorbs the fragrance of flowers, while flowers do not take on the smell of the soil.

sādhūnāṃ darśanaṃ puṇyaṃ tīrthabhūtā hi sādhavaḥ ।
kālēna phalatē tīrthaṃ sadyaḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
The sight of virtuous people itself is meritorious, for the virtuous are like sacred pilgrimage places. The benefits of visiting a pilgrimage place may manifest with time, whereas the benefit of meeting a saint can arise immediately.

viprāsminnagarē mahānkathaya kastāladrumāṇāṃ gaṇaḥ
kō dātā rajakō dadāti vasanaṃ prātargṛhītvā niśi ।
kō dakṣaḥ paravittadāraharaṇē sarvō’pi dakṣō janaḥ
kasmājjīvasi hē sakhē viṣakṛminyāyēna jīvāmyaham ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
O Brahmin, tell me, how large is the grove of palm trees in this city? Who is truly generous? A washerman takes clothes in the morning and returns them at night—what does he actually give? Who is skilled at taking another’s wealth and spouse? Everyone seems skilled at that. O friend, how do you live? I live like a worm in poison, meaning that I survive amid harsh and corrupt circumstances.

na viprapādōdakakardamāṇi
na vēdaśāstradhvanigarjitāni ।
svāhāsvadhākāravivarjitāni
śmaśānatulyāni gṛhāṇi tāni ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
A house where the sanctifying presence of Brahmins is absent, where the sounds of the Vedas and scriptures are never heard, and where sacred offerings such as Svaha and Svadha are not practiced is compared to a cremation ground.

satyaṃ mātā pitā jñānaṃ dharmō bhrātā dayā sakhā ।
śāntiḥ patnī kṣamā putraḥ ṣaḍētē mama bāndhavāḥ ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
Truth is my mother, knowledge is my father, righteousness is my brother, compassion is my friend, peace is my wife, and forgiveness is my son. These six are my true relatives.

anityāni śarīrāṇi vibhavō naiva śāśvataḥ ।
nityaṃ sannihitō mṛtyuḥ kartavyō dharmasaṅgrahaḥ ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
Bodies are impermanent, and wealth and prosperity are never everlasting. Death is always near. Therefore, one should continually accumulate righteousness and spiritual merit.

nimantrōtsavā viprā gāvō navatṛṇōtsavāḥ ।
patyutsāhayutā bhāryā ahaṃ kṛṣṇacharaṇōtsavaḥ ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
An invitation to a feast is a celebration for Brahmins; fresh grass is a celebration for cows; a husband’s affection is a source of joy for a wife; and for me, serving the feet of Lord Krishna is the greatest celebration.

mātṛvatparadārēṣu paradravyēṣu lōṣṭravat ।
ātmavatsarvabhūtēṣu yaḥ paśyati sa paṇḍitaḥ ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
One who sees another’s wife as a mother, another’s wealth as a lump of clay, and all living beings as oneself is truly wise.

dharmē tatparatā mukhē madhuratā dānē samutsāhatā
mitrē’vañchakatā gurau vinayatā chittē’timabhīratā ।
āchārē śuchitā guṇē rasikatā śāstrēṣu vijñānatā
rūpē sundaratā śivē bhajanatā tvayyasti bhō rāghava ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
O Raghava, You possess complete devotion to righteousness, sweetness of speech, enthusiasm for charity, sincerity toward friends, humility before teachers, great fearlessness of heart, purity of conduct, appreciation of virtue, knowledge of the scriptures, beauty of form, and devotion to Lord Shiva.

kāṣṭhaṃ kalpataruḥ sumēruchalaśchintāmaṇiḥ prastaraḥ
sūryāstīvrakaraḥ śaśī kṣayakaraḥ kṣārō hi vārāṃ nidhiḥ ।
kāmō naṣṭatanurvalirditisutō nityaṃ paśuḥ kāmagau-
rnaitāṃstē tulayāmi bhō raghupatē kasyōpamā dīyatē ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
O Lord of the Raghu dynasty, ordinary wood may be compared to a wish-fulfilling tree, and an ordinary stone to Mount Meru or the wish-fulfilling gem in Your presence. The Sun is intensely radiant, the Moon wanes, and the ocean is salty; Kamadeva lost his body, and even Bali’s son remains but a mortal being. I cannot compare any of these with You. What could possibly serve as an adequate comparison for You?

vidyā mitraṃ pravāsē cha bhāryā mitraṃ gṛhēṣu cha ।
vyādhitasyauṣadhaṃ mitraṃ dharmō mitraṃ mṛtasya cha ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
Knowledge is a friend during travel and in foreign lands; a wife is a friend at home; medicine is a friend to the sick; and righteousness is the true friend of a person after death.

vinayaṃ rājaputrēbhyaḥ paṇḍitēbhyaḥ subhāṣitam ।
anṛtaṃ dyūtakārēbhyaḥ strībhyaḥ śikṣēta kaitavam ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
One should learn humility and courteous conduct from princes, refined speech from learned people, falsehood from gamblers, and cleverness from women. This verse reflects an ancient social viewpoint about learning different practical qualities from different kinds of people.

anālōkya vyayaṃ kartā anāthaḥ kalahapriyaḥ ।
āturaḥ sarvakṣētrēṣu naraḥ śīghraṃ vinaśyati ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
A wise person should not constantly worry about food; rather, one should concern oneself with righteousness and duty. Food necessary for sustaining life is said to come along with one’s birth through the natural order of existence.

English Meaning:
One should not be unnecessarily shy in the proper use of wealth and food, in acquiring knowledge, or in necessary dealings. A person who gives up needless hesitation in such matters lives happily.

jalabindunipātēna kramaśaḥ pūryatē ghaṭaḥ ।
sa hētuḥ sarvavidyānāṃ dharmasya cha dhanasya cha ॥ 22 ॥

English Meaning:
Just as a pot is gradually filled by the continuous falling of drops of water, knowledge, righteousness, and wealth are accumulated through steady and consistent effort.

vayasaḥ pariṇāmē’pi yaḥ khalaḥ khala ēva saḥ ।
sampakvamapi mādhuryaṃ nōpayātīndravāruṇam ॥ 23 ॥

English Meaning:
Even as a person grows older, one who is wicked by nature remains wicked. Just as the Indravaruna fruit does not become sweet even when fully ripe, age alone does not transform a person’s inherent nature.
