Taraknath Temple

Taraknath Temple, located in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fierce form known as Taraknath or Tarakeshwarnath.

“जहाँ शिव का वास है, वहाँ शांति और मोक्ष का मार्ग स्वतः प्रशस्त होता है – तारकनाथ मंदिर इसका साक्षात प्रमाण है।”

― Taraknath Temple

It enshrines a swayambhu Shivlinga and is one of the prime pilgrimage destinations in Bengal.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built in 1729 AD by Raja Bharamalla Rao, following a dream revelation to his brother, who discovered the self-manifested linga in the forest. Villagers first constructed a small temple that grew into the present structure.
Taraknath is regarded as an Ugra (fierce) form of Shiva, known to have drunk venom during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), and is considered consort to Bhagwati Tara, with whom true devotees are believed to attain moksha.

Significance of the Temple

Devotees flock here seeking divine blessings, inner peace, and fulfillment of their wishes. The adjacent Dudhpukur tank, believed to be blessed, is used for ritual dips to enhance the efficacy of prayers.
The temple draws enormous crowds during Shivaratri, the Gajan festival, and throughout the Sravana month, particularly on Mondays, which are considered especially auspicious.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in classic Bengal “atchala” style, the temple features the traditional curved roof structure and a spacious ‘natmandir’ (prayer pavilion) in front.

It includes four small roofs over the sanctum, extended verandahs, and is surrounded by ancillary shrines for Kali and Lakshmi Narayan.

How to Reach to Temple

By Train: Alight at Tarakeswar Railway Station, just ~1 km from the temple.

By Road: Well connected to major towns like Kolkata, buses and taxis are available.

By Air: Nearest airport is Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, about 30–60 km away
