Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu

CONVERSATION 3

The Sri Sathya Sai Aradhana Mahotsavam is just concluded with grand celebrations in Prasanthi Nilayam in the immediate Divine OmniPresence of Beloved Bhagawan. With the spirit of Sri Sathya Sai Aradhana on… how crucially important it is to take up the revised Cosmic MahaMantra, Born Of Bhagawan, as a way of life… before moving forward.  A beautiful presentation on the Cosmic ‘Liberatory’ Theme called ‘Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu’ by The Prasanthi Reporter. (Script, Concept and Voice by ‘Mother Sai Poet’ Sri Jullie Chaudhuri for The Prasanthi Reporter)

Dear Sisters and Brothers…Loving Loving  Sai Ram…Peace of the soul and Harmony for all! We are here to hear and connect to a distinctly selfless mantra. Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu.

As we have all seen, heard, read and witnessed our Beloved Bhagawan’s teachings and the examples set by Him, the welfare of all beings is what He stresses on…Consequently, on 31st August 2008, Bhagawan modified Lokaah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu which interprets as – May all the beings in this world be happy and peaceful… to now be intoned as – Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu…that it may exude peace for all the beings in all the worlds.

Is it not imperative then   that we chant this mantra for Universal peace?

As we keep chanting this, the mantra becomes ‘us’ – universal seva. The bonus is that along with peace, this revives a feeling of brotherhood, camaraderie and the chorus of kindred oneness.

Beings of light did spring forth from the silence deep within the Lord’s heart and so we are all connected and never apart…for those beings are us all…

Many are the challenges faced by the individual, the society, and the world, and this is having serious repercussions on and is a constant  threat to Mother Earth…a threat that is gathering enormous momentum…

We need to come together and help heal the world…

Thus, ‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’, which is a Universal Prayer beyond boundaries of personal beliefs, will benefit all – from unseen beings to those seen…from mortals to animals to plants and trees…to marine life to birds to rivers, mountains and rocks…all the planets, all the lokaas…to every speck in the cosmos.

It has such a magnified effect, that not only will it encompass Mother Earth, but will also take in the whole Universe into its fold – an embrace of Cosmic proportions – A Cosmic Embrace

‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’ engulfs the elements five – Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth and brings about a balance ever so harmonious.

Beloved Mother Sai, You always exhort us to adhere to Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa. And through this chant, You, Beloved One, are teaching us to link Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and thereby…evolve into Ahimsa.

Oh! Mother Sai, You are the Creator and the welfare of Your Creation is what pleases You the most.
Accept our prayer, Dearest One, that we may make this chant –‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’ – our very breath and feel deeply for all living beings.

Let our lives be Your message…and Your compassion our mission…through this chant, which is luminous in nature, prolific in its reach and propitious, wholesome and divine in character.

You, Sweet Mother Sai, have always stressed that we chant ‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’, accordingly, we now desire to make it our way of life, as it will make us go away from the ‘I’ to ‘We’ and finally into ‘You’…Oh Cherished Mother Sai.

To those of you listening to these lines just now, you are at the right place at the right time…for it is vitally essential that we chant this mantra for Universal Peace – both individually and collectively.

And we have to start now.

Sit where you are, chant ‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’ and embrace the Cosmos, all sentient and insentient beings…without moving an inch.

The vibrations released by chanting it together will reach the Lord’s Heart and His bliss will reach us all, for what pleases Him is that we unite and live together in peace and harmony.

Let us help heal the world that our children will inherit…

‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’…will help you reach the real you…

Your life can then be a fragrant offering at the Lotus Feet of Beloved Mother Sai…
Dear Listener…we present variations of this mantra for all the beings in samastha lokaahs…may your being resonate with each variation…may peace resound in the cosmos within you, may there be harmony around you…and may tranquillity surround you…for you are the Universe…and the Universe is You!

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu – A Prayer for Universal Peace

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is not just a mantra to be recited; it is a feeling to be lived. It carries a beautiful prayer that all beings in all worlds should be happy, peaceful, and protected. In a world where people are often divided by religion, language, country, opinion, and personal interest, this sacred thought invites the human heart to become wider. It teaches us to move beyond “me” and “mine” and think of the welfare of everyone.

The greatness of this prayer lies in its simplicity. It does not ask for happiness for one family, one community, one nation, or one faith alone. It embraces all. It includes people we know and people we may never meet. It includes those who agree with us and those who do not. It includes animals, nature, and every form of life that shares this vast creation. Such a prayer slowly purifies the mind because it removes selfishness from the heart.

When we repeat Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu with sincerity, we are not only sending good wishes outward; we are also training ourselves inwardly. The mind becomes less narrow. The heart becomes less harsh. We begin to understand that our peace is connected with the peace of others. No one can remain truly happy while spreading pain around them. Real happiness grows when our thoughts, words, and actions become useful to the world.

Many people search for peace through comfort, success, or recognition. These may bring temporary satisfaction, but they cannot give lasting joy if the heart remains restless. True peace begins when we stop living only for ourselves. A kind word, a small act of service, a forgiving attitude, or a silent prayer for someone’s well-being can change the quality of our own life. The more goodness we offer, the lighter we feel within.

In the light of Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu, spirituality is not limited to rituals or worship alone. It becomes a way of seeing life. Feeding the hungry, respecting elders, protecting nature, helping the weak, speaking gently, and avoiding harm are all forms of prayer. A person who lives with compassion becomes a moving temple. Their presence itself brings comfort to others.

This prayer is especially meaningful today. The modern world has become fast, connected, and powerful, yet many hearts feel lonely and anxious. People may speak across continents within seconds, but still struggle to understand those sitting beside them. Technology has reduced distance, but only love can reduce separation. That is why universal goodwill is not an old idea; it is a timeless need.

For a devotee, Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is also a reminder of responsibility. It is easy to chant noble words, but the real test is whether we live according to them. If we pray for all beings to be happy, we must not knowingly become the cause of anyone’s sorrow. If we pray for peace, we must reduce anger in our own speech. If we pray for harmony, we must stop feeding hatred in our thoughts.

This does not mean that life will become free from challenges. Difficult people, painful situations, and personal struggles will still appear. But this prayer gives us a higher direction. It reminds us that we should not allow bitterness to decide our behavior. Even when we cannot change the whole world, we can change the way we respond to it. A peaceful response is also a contribution to peace.

The beauty of this mantra is that it belongs to every human heart. One need not be a scholar to understand it. One need not belong to any particular background to feel its truth. A mother praying for her child, a teacher guiding students, a farmer caring for the land, a doctor serving patients, and a devotee sitting in silence can all live this spirit in their own way.

The true message of Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is that love should not stop at personal boundaries. Our compassion must grow until it includes the suffering of others as our own. When another person is hungry, humanity is hungry. When nature is wounded, humanity is wounded. When any being is treated with cruelty, the balance of life is disturbed.

If this prayer becomes part of daily living, even ordinary moments can become sacred. Before eating, we can remember those who have no food. Before speaking, we can choose words that do not hurt. Before sleeping, we can silently wish peace for the world. These small practices create a gentle transformation within us.

May the spirit of Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu awaken kindness in every heart. May it guide our thoughts toward purity, our words toward healing, and our actions toward service. When we sincerely wish happiness for all beings, we move closer to the highest truth: life becomes meaningful only when it is lived with love for all.
