Defending Mother India…
India, the magical land of great spiritual inheritance, is hailed by Bhagawan umpteen times, teaching the students and devotees of the greater glory of Motherland India. How Bhagawan delivered a ‘pep talk, a Divine discourse to the Army personnel at Army Service Corps Centre for South India, raising the spirits of the warriors, blessing them with Divine Assurance of victory for every Truthful… Righteous attempt in the name of Mother India…!?!?!? Extracted from Bhagawan’s Divine discourse on Jan 5, 1973.
India is a land, dedicated to Truth, Righteousness, Peace and Love; you are dedicated to the service of the Motherland, to defend her and preserve her independence. This is in accordance with the ancient injunction, Matru Devo Bhava—Revere the Mother as you would revere God. You are ready and prepared to sacrifice even your lives in her service, whatever others may do or may not do. I Am glad your devotion is so strong and so sincere. Truth, Righteousness, Peace and Love—these are the four pillars on which the mansion of happiness, here and hereafter, is built. India too must build her happiness on these columns only. They are the real supports of India, of India’s security, prosperity and glory. We have forgotten this truth; we have neglected the foundation; hence, all this suffering today.
God will always be with you in your struggle for the defense of this land. From within you, He will be guiding and inspiring you, to discharge your duty. Truth is God, and Work is Worship. By unselfish Service, strict adherence to Duty, and dedication to the cause of Peace you are promoting the welfare of India and of all humanity. The Mahabharata War is a good example of the guidance that God grants when righteousness defends itself against the forces of evil. Krishna was the very heart of the Pandava Body! Dharmaja, the eldest of the Five Brothers was the Head; Bhima, the second brother, was the Stomach; Arjuna, the third, was the Arms; Nakula and Sahadeva, the twins, were the Legs—and Krishna was the Heart. God will not merely speak and guide from the heart; He will Himself be the Heart, provided you pray to Him to bless you so.
We achieve Peace and Joy, only through sacrifice. Giving yields more joy than grasping. Since you are all prepared for the highest sacrifice, you are genuine Sons of Bharat. Many do not realise the joy that can be derived from unselfishness; they waste their years and their lives in the pursuit of selfish ends. They are so conceited that they do not revere parents, elders, the saints and the sages. They do not invoke the grace of God through prayer. As a result, India is leaving off its age‑old traditions and taking on new fashions and patterns of behaviour, thus landing people in misery.
The body is referred to in the Gita as Kshetram, that is to say, a holy place where God is installed. Kasi is a Kshetram, Bhadrachalam is a Kshetram. The body‑kshetram is Dharmakshetram as well as Kurukshetram, the abode of Righteousness and of Activity. God in the Kshetram Is The Kshetrajna, the Sivam without Whom the body is but savam or corpse. Therefore, be ever aware of the God Who Is The Real `you’, and seek solace, sustenance and guidance from Him through prayer.

Defending Mother India – A Sacred Duty of Love, Unity, and Character
Defending Mother India is not only the duty of soldiers standing bravely at the borders. It is also the responsibility of every citizen who loves the nation with sincerity and understands the deeper meaning of patriotism. A country is protected not merely by weapons, walls, and laws, but by the character, unity, discipline, and moral strength of its people.
India is more than a piece of land. It is a sacred civilization shaped by saints, sages, mothers, farmers, workers, teachers, reformers, freedom fighters, and countless ordinary people who lived with sacrifice. Its soil carries stories of courage, devotion, wisdom, and service. To love such a land is to honor both its physical boundaries and its spiritual heritage.
Defending Mother India begins with gratitude. Many people enjoy freedom, education, culture, language, and opportunities without thinking of those who struggled to preserve them. Freedom was not received casually. It came through sacrifice, suffering, courage, and faith. When we remember this, national love becomes deeper than slogans or celebrations. It becomes a living responsibility.
True defense of the nation starts with self-discipline. A careless citizen weakens society, while a responsible citizen strengthens it. Following rules, respecting public property, paying attention to duties, avoiding corruption, and living honestly are all forms of national service. When people become truthful and disciplined, the nation becomes strong from within.
Defending Mother India also means protecting unity. India has many languages, religions, customs, festivals, and ways of life. This diversity is not a weakness; it is a beautiful strength when held together by mutual respect. Division begins when people forget that they belong to one larger family. A true patriot does not insult another community. He sees every sincere citizen as part of the nation’s shared destiny.
The spirit of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s message is deeply relevant here. He taught love, service, truth, peace, and unity of all faiths. These values are not separate from patriotism. A nation becomes noble when its citizens practice compassion, respect elders, protect children, speak truthfully, and serve the needy. Spiritual values give moral power to national life.
To protect the motherland, we must also protect its culture. Culture is not only clothing, food, music, or festivals. It is the way people think, speak, behave, and relate to one another. Respect for parents, reverence for teachers, hospitality toward guests, care for nature, and devotion to truth are part of India’s inner wealth. If these values fade, the nation loses something precious.
Defending Mother India requires service to the poor, weak, and neglected. A country cannot be truly strong if some of its children remain hungry, uneducated, lonely, or ignored. Serving the nation means helping those who need support. Teaching a child, feeding someone in need, caring for the elderly, supporting farmers, and helping during disasters are all noble acts of patriotism.
Youth have a special role in this sacred duty. They are not only the future of the country; they are also its present energy. If young people become addicted to laziness, negativity, and selfish entertainment, society suffers. But if they develop discipline, skill, compassion, courage, and respect for values, they become powerful builders of the nation.
Education should also support national character. Degrees alone cannot protect a country. Knowledge must be joined with humility, ethics, and service. Students should learn not only how to earn, but how to live. They should understand the sacrifices behind the nation’s freedom and the responsibilities that come with citizenship. A value-based education creates responsible hearts.
Defending Mother India includes protecting nature as well. Rivers, forests, mountains, fields, animals, and air are part of national life. Pollution, waste, and careless consumption harm the land that nourishes us. Planting trees, saving water, reducing waste, and respecting natural resources are not small actions. They are offerings of gratitude to the motherland.
Speech also matters in national life. Words can unite or divide. Rumors, hatred, insults, and careless statements can damage social harmony. A responsible citizen speaks with awareness. He may disagree, but he does not spread bitterness. He may criticize wrong actions, but he does not lose respect for the nation or its people.
Defending Mother India does not mean blind pride. True love for the country includes honesty. We must celebrate what is noble, but also correct what is wrong. Corruption, injustice, cruelty, discrimination, and indifference must be faced with courage. A loving child does not ignore the mother’s pain; he works to heal it. In the same way, true patriotism seeks improvement with respect.
The armed forces protect the borders with bravery, but citizens must protect the soul of the nation through values. Every honest worker, sincere teacher, compassionate doctor, hardworking farmer, devoted parent, disciplined student, and selfless volunteer contributes to national strength. Greatness is built through countless acts of responsibility.
In the end, Defending Mother India is a sacred commitment to live as worthy children of a great land. It asks us to love without hatred, serve without pride, work without corruption, and unite without narrowness. When citizens become truthful, compassionate, disciplined, and devoted to the welfare of all, the nation becomes strong not only in power, but in spirit.
