The Sadhana of Love
The Sadhana of Love programme has been developed for Sathya Sai adults, young adults, and children to support the realisation of our inherent divinity – our true nature as pure love.
The Young Adults 2020 Sathya Sai Sadhana of Love Programme is here
There are four key principles needed on our journey to achieving this: Self-confidence, Self-satisfaction, self-sacrifice and Self-realisation.
Within the Sadhana of Love – Choose Your Sadhanas , each step includes Swami’s definition of that step and 18 supporting sadhanas (spiritual practices) with explanatory quotes from His teachings.
Guidelines
With love as the focus, you are encouraged to listen to your conscience and choose sadhanas that you feel will manifest the most love and lead to the realisation that the same divinity dwells in all as love.
Choose one sadhana from each of the four steps of Self-confidence, Self-satisfaction, self-sacrifice and Self-realisation.
Read and research what Sathya Sai Baba said about each of your selected sadhanas.
Practise your selected sadhanas with loving consistency.
Manifest more love in your words, actions, thoughts, character and heart.
Once your selected sadhanas are well established in your daily life, you can make further selections to help expand your love.
In addition to these personal sadhanas, groups can choose group-based sadhanas to practise. Leaders are encouraged to discuss options with adults, young adults, young adult advisors, children, SSE teachers, and centre and regional presidents.
Devotees may determine their own ways of promoting the understanding and practice of the Sadhana of Love. Devotees can identify tools and techniques to implement, monitor and discuss the benefits of practising their sadhanas. Methods proven to be successful in the past include:
personal reflection journals
self-monitoring
buddy or mentoring systems
weekly or fortnightly study circles
utilising technologies such as Skype conferencing, WhatsApp Messenger and online forums in accordance with SSIO communication and social media guidelines.
The sharing of successful practices and positive outcomes is encouraged.

The Sadhana of Love – A Divine Practice Of Devotion, Service, And Inner Purity
The Sadhana of Love is a sacred spiritual theme that reminds us that love is not only a feeling, but a daily practice. Sadhana means disciplined spiritual effort, and when love becomes our sadhana, every thought, word, and action becomes an opportunity to grow closer to God. True love must be practiced with patience, humility, service, forgiveness, and purity.
Many people speak about love, but real love is tested in daily life. It is easy to love those who agree with us, praise us, or behave as we wish. But spiritual love asks us to remain kind even during difficulty, patient during misunderstanding, and forgiving when the ego feels hurt. This kind of love slowly purifies the heart.
The Sadhana of Love teaches that love should begin with the purification of thought. If the mind is filled with jealousy, anger, pride, and selfishness, love cannot flow freely. A devotee must watch the mind carefully and replace negative thoughts with prayer, understanding, and compassion. When thoughts become pure, speech and actions naturally become better.
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba always emphasized love as the foundation of spiritual life. His message of love all, serve all and help ever, hurt never is not only a beautiful teaching; it is a practical discipline. To live this message, one must control harsh words, reduce ego, serve without expectation, and see God in every being.
The Sadhana of Love also means learning to serve selflessly. Service done without love can become dry duty, and love without service can remain only emotion. When love and service come together, life becomes sacred. Feeding the hungry, helping the sick, comforting the sad, guiding children, and supporting those in need are all forms of worship.
In family life, love must be practiced through patience, respect, and gentle speech. Sometimes people are polite outside but careless at home. Real spiritual practice begins with the people closest to us. Listening with attention, forgiving quickly, helping without complaint, and speaking kindly are simple but powerful steps in divine living.
The Sadhana of Love becomes deeper when we remove expectation. Much pain in relationships comes from the desire to control, receive praise, or be treated exactly as we wish. Selfless love gives without constantly calculating return. It does not become weak, but it becomes free from selfish demand. Such love brings peace to both giver and receiver.
Forgiveness is an important part of this sadhana. Without forgiveness, the heart remains heavy. Holding anger is like carrying poison inside. Forgiveness does not mean supporting wrong actions, but it means refusing to live in hatred. A forgiving heart becomes light, peaceful, and open to divine grace.
The Sadhana of Love also teaches humility. The ego wants recognition for every good action. It wants others to know, praise, and appreciate. But true love serves quietly. It feels grateful for the opportunity to help. A humble devotee does not think, “I am doing great service.” The feeling is, “God has allowed me to serve Him through others.”
Love must also guide our speech. Words can heal or wound. A loving person speaks truth, but with kindness. Silence is better than speech that hurts. Encouraging words, respectful words, and comforting words can bring strength to someone’s heart. When speech becomes loving, it becomes a form of worship.
The Sadhana of Love finally reminds us that God is love, and the path to God is also love. Prayer, bhajan, meditation, and study become meaningful when they make us more compassionate. If spiritual practice does not reduce anger and selfishness, then we must practice more sincerely. The sign of real progress is a softer heart and a purer life.
In the end, love is the sweetest and highest sadhana. It does not require wealth, scholarship, or outer greatness. It requires sincerity, patience, and daily effort. When love becomes our practice, service becomes joyful, relationships become peaceful, and life becomes a sacred offering at the lotus feet of the Divine.
