Sankshipta Puja Vidhanam (Smarta Paddhati)

संक्षिप्त पूजा विधानम् (स्मार्त पद्धतिः)
Concise method of worship according to the Smarta tradition.

आवश्यकानि वस्तूनि
Required items for the worship ceremony.

दीपः
A sacred lamp used for offering light to the deity.

गन्धः
Sandalwood paste or sacred fragrance offered during worship.

अक्षताः
Unbroken rice grains offered as a symbol of purity and devotion.

पुष्पाणि
Flowers offered with love and reverence.

धूपः
Incense offered during worship.

नैवेद्यम्
Food prepared and offered to the chosen deity.

ताम्बूलम्
Betel leaves and traditional offerings presented to the deity.

पूजा पात्रम्
Sacred vessels used during the worship ceremony.

इष्ट देवता प्रतिमा वा चित्रपटः वा
An idol or picture of the chosen deity.

सूचना
This is a general worship template. Replace “Ishta Devata” with the actual deity or mantra traditionally worshipped in your family. Examples include mantras for Ganesha, Shiva, Narayana, Durga, and Subrahmanya.

संक्षिप्त पूर्वाङ्ग पूजा
Concise preliminary worship performed before the main पूजा.

श्रीमहागणाधिपतये नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Mahāgaṇapati, the remover of obstacles.

श्री गुरुभ्यो नमः ।
Salutations to the revered Guru, the spiritual guide.

हरिः ॐ ।
Hari Om, the sacred invocation of the Divine.

शुचिः
Purification prayer.

अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा ।
यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः ॥
Whether one is pure or impure, or in any condition of life, by remembering the lotus-eyed Lord, one becomes purified both externally and internally.

पुण्डरीकाक्ष पुण्डरीकाक्ष पुण्डरीकाक्षाय नमः ॥
Salutations to Lord Puṇḍarīkākṣa, the lotus-eyed Lord.

प्रार्थना
Prayer before beginning the worship.

शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् ।
प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥
Meditate upon Lord Vishnu, who wears white garments, shines like the moon, has four arms, and has a serene face, for the removal of all obstacles.

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर् विष्णुः गुरुर् देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, and the Guru is Maheshwara. The Guru is truly the Supreme Brahman. Salutations to that revered Guru.

आचमनम्
Ritual purification performed with sacred water.

ॐ केशवाय स्वाहा ।
Salutations to Lord Keshava.

ॐ नारायणाय स्वाहा ।
Salutations to Lord Narayana.

ॐ माधवाय स्वाहा ।
Salutations to Lord Madhava.

ॐ गोविन्दाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Govinda.

ॐ विष्णवे नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Vishnu.

ॐ मधुसूदनाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Madhusudana, the destroyer of the demon Madhu.

ॐ त्रिविक्रमाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Trivikrama, the divine one who encompasses the three worlds.

ॐ वामनाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Vamana, the divine dwarf incarnation.

ॐ श्रीधराय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Sridhara, the bearer of Goddess Lakshmi.

ॐ हृषीकेशाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses.

ॐ पद्मनाभाय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Padmanabha, the lotus-naveled Lord.

ॐ दामोदराय नमः ।
Salutations to Lord Damodara.

दीपाराधनम्
Worship of the sacred lamp.

दीपस्त्वं ब्रह्मरूपोऽसि ज्योतिषां प्रभुरव्ययः ।
सौभाग्यं देहि पुत्रांश्च सर्वान्कामांश्च देहि मे ॥
O sacred lamp, You represent Brahman and are the eternal Lord of all lights. Bless me with auspiciousness, family prosperity, and fulfillment of my righteous wishes.

सङ्कल्पः
The sacred intention and vow taken before beginning the worship.

मम उपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षय द्वारा श्रीपरमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं, श्री इष्ट देवता-प्रीत्यर्थं, यावच्छक्ति संक्षिप्त ध्यान-आवाहनादि-षोडशोपचार-पूजां करिष्ये ॥
For the removal of all my accumulated shortcomings and for the pleasure of Lord Parameshwara and my chosen deity, I shall perform the concise sixteen-step worship, beginning with meditation and invocation, according to my ability.

श्री महागणपति स्मरणम्
Remembrance and invocation of Lord Mahāganapati.

ॐ गणानां त्वा गणपतिं हवामहे कविं कवीनामुपमश्रवस्तमम् ।
ज्येष्ठराजं ब्रह्मणां ब्रह्मणस्पत आ नः शृण्वन्नूतिभिः सीद सादनम् ॥
We invoke You, O Lord of all groups, the wisest among the wise and the most renowned. O Lord of sacred wisdom, hear our prayers and graciously be present among us.

सुमुखश्चैकदन्तश्च कपिलो गजकर्णकः ।
लम्बोदरश्च विकटो विघ्नराजो गणाधिपः ॥
We remember Lord Ganesha by His sacred names: the One with the beautiful face, one tusk, tawny form, elephant ears, large belly, formidable form, Lord of obstacles, and Lord of divine hosts.

ॐ श्रीमहागणपतये नमः ।
ध्यायामि । आवाहयामि । समस्त उपचारान् समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to Lord Sri Mahaganapati. I meditate upon You, invoke Your presence, and offer all the traditional services of worship.

संक्षिप्त षोडशोपचार पूजा
Concise sixteen-step worship.

इष्ट देवता ध्यानम्
Meditation upon the chosen deity.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
ध्यायामि । ध्यानं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I meditate upon You and offer this meditation with devotion.

आवाहनम्
Invocation of the chosen deity.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
आवाहयामि । स्थापयामि । पूजयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I invoke Your presence, establish You here, and worship You.

आसनम्
Offering of a sacred seat.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
आसनं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer a sacred seat for You.

पाद्यम्
Offering of water for washing the divine feet.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
पादयोः पाद्यं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer sacred water for Your feet.

अर्घ्यम्
Offering of sacred water as a gesture of honor and respect.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
हस्तयोः अर्घ्यं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer sacred water into Your hands.

आचमनीयम्
Offering of water for ritual purification.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
मुखे आचमनीयं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer water for purification.

स्नानम्
Sacred bathing of the deity.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
शुद्धोदक स्नानं समर्पयामि ।
स्नानानन्तरं आचमनीयं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer a sacred bath with pure water and, after the bath, offer water for purification.

वस्त्रम्
Offering of sacred clothing.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
वस्त्रं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer sacred clothing.

यज्ञोपवीतम्
Offering of the sacred thread.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
यज्ञोपवीतं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer the sacred thread.

गन्धम्
Offering of sandalwood paste and sacred fragrance.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
गन्धं समर्पयामि ॥

अर्चना
Offering of flowers or sacred rice while chanting the names of the chosen deity.

इष्ट देवता नामावली पठनम् ॥
Recite the sacred name-list of the chosen deity.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
अष्टोत्तर शत नामावली पूजां समर्पयामि ।
अक्षतान् पुष्पाणि च समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer worship through the recitation of the 108 sacred names and offer sacred rice grains and flowers.

धूपम्
Offering of sacred incense.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
धूपमाघ्रापयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer fragrant incense.

दीपम्
Offering of the sacred lamp.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
दीपं दर्शयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I show the sacred lamp.

नैवेद्यम्
Offering of food to the chosen deity.

ॐ भूर्भुवः सुवः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
We meditate upon the divine radiance of Savita. May that Supreme Divine light inspire and guide our intellect.

ॐ प्राणाय स्वाहा । ॐ अपानाय स्वाहा । ॐ व्यानाय स्वाहा ।
ॐ उदानाय स्वाहा । ॐ समानाय स्वाहा ।
Offerings are made to the five vital energies: Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, and Samana.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि ।
मध्ये मध्ये पानीयं समर्पयामि ।
शुद्धाचमनीयं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer the prepared food, water during the offering, and pure water for purification.

ताम्बूलम्
Offering of betel leaves and traditional after-meal offerings.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
ताम्बूलं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer sacred tāmbūla.

नीराजनम्
Offering of sacred light in a ceremonial manner.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
नीराजनं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer the sacred light.

मन्त्रपुष्पम्
Offering of flowers accompanied by sacred mantras.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
मन्त्रपुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer flowers with sacred mantras.

प्रदक्षिणम्
Circumambulation performed as an act of reverence.

यानी कानि च पापानि जन्मान्तर कृतानि च ।
तानि तानि प्रणश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिण पदे पदे ॥
May all sins and shortcomings accumulated through previous births be destroyed with every step of this sacred circumambulation.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
प्रदक्षिण नमस्कारान् समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer circumambulation and respectful prostrations.

नमस्कारः
Respectful salutation and prostration before the deity.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
नमस्कारान् समर्पयामि ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I offer my respectful prostrations.

क्षमाप्रार्थना
Prayer seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings in the worship.

मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वर ।
यत्पूजितं मया देव परिपूर्णं तदस्तु ते ॥
O Lord of the gods, if this worship has been lacking in mantras, proper actions, or devotion, may whatever I have offered be accepted as complete by Your grace.

कायेन वाचा मनसेन्द्रियैर्वा
बुद्ध्यात्मना वा प्रकृतेः स्वभावात् ।
करोमि यद्यत् सकलं परस्मै
नारायणायेति समर्पयामि ॥
Whatever I do through my body, speech, mind, senses, intellect, or according to my natural tendencies, I offer everything to the Supreme Lord Narayana.

अनया संक्षिप्त ध्यान-आवाहनादि-षोडशोपचार पूजया श्री इष्ट देवता सुप्रीता सुप्रसन्ना वरदा भवतु ॥
May the chosen deity be pleased, gracious, and bestow blessings through this concise worship beginning with meditation, invocation, and the sixteen traditional offerings.

उद्वासनम्
Ceremonial conclusion in which the invoked divine presence is respectfully returned to its proper place.

ॐ श्री इष्ट देवतायै नमः ।
यथास्थानं उद्वासयामि ।
शोभनार्थे क्षेमाय पुनरागमनाय च ॥
Salutations to the chosen deity. I respectfully conclude the invocation and request the Divine to return to its proper place, with the prayer for continued welfare and a gracious return.

प्रसाद ग्रहणम्
Receiving the sacred offering as prasada.

श्री इष्ट देवता प्रसादं शिरसा गृह्णामि ॥
I reverently receive the prasada of the chosen deity with humility and devotion.

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
May there be peace, peace, and peace.

ॐ तत्सत् ब्रह्मार्पणमस्तु ॥
Om Tat Sat. May everything be offered to the Supreme Brahman.
