Story of Buddhism describes the origin, development, and spread of one of the world’s major spiritual traditions. Buddhism began in ancient India with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha, meaning “the Awakened One.” His teachings focused on understanding suffering and finding a path toward liberation.
According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha was born into a royal family and lived a protected life. After encountering old age, sickness, death, and an ascetic, he became deeply concerned about the problems of human existence. He left his luxurious life and spent years searching for spiritual truth. After deep meditation at Bodh Gaya, he attained enlightenment and began teaching others.
The Buddha explained his teachings through the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. He emphasized wisdom, ethical conduct, meditation, compassion, non-violence, and freedom from attachment. His teachings gradually attracted many followers and led to the formation of the Buddhist Sangha.
After the Buddha’s death, Buddhism spread across different regions of India and later throughout Asia. It developed into different traditions, including Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Buddhism has greatly influenced philosophy, meditation, art, literature, and culture across the world.
