Charity
“I have learnt that it is the foremost duty of man to learn to give – give in charity, give in plenty, give with love, give without any expectation. Charity is incomplete without charity of disposition, charity of feeling, charity of understanding.” -Swami Sivananda
The inborn tendencies of helping others, sharing all that he had with others and always giving plentiful had made Swami Sivananda a personification of charity. During the early days of the Ashram, even when the entire ration was exhausted and there was no money to buy fresh ration, he would keep on giving in plenty. He had given generously to the thief who had stolen things from the Ashram, and even to the person who had tried to kill him! His charity and generosity had no bounds. Here are some gems of his broad vision…
Charity is the disposition to think favourably of others and do them good. In a general sense, charity means love, benevolence and goodwill. In a theoretical sense, it is universal goodwill to man and supreme love to God.
Charity is love in action. True charity is the desire to be useful to others without thought of recompense or reward.
Every good act is charity. To be kind and loving is charity. To forget and forgive some harm done to you is charity. A kind word said to a suffering man is charity.
The whole world is your home. You are a citizen of the world. Cultivate a generous feeling for the welfare of the whole world.
He who lives as a trustee of his property and spends his money in charity thinks that the property really belongs to the Lord, and lives happily.
Think well towards suffering people. Pray for their welfare. Feel that every being is a manifestation of the Lord. This will accomplish more good than much money.
Sins can be destroyed by charity. Lord Jesus says: “Charity covereth a multitude of sins.” Charity is a great purifier of heart.
See God everywhere. Share with all. O Man! Give plenty in charity. You will enjoy peace, plenty and prosperity.
Charity: The Divine Practice of Selfless Giving
The act of selfless giving has been treasured across cultures and spiritual traditions for thousands of years. It is a beautiful expression of compassion that reflects kindness, generosity, and concern for the well-being of others. Whether offered through food, clothing, education, financial assistance, or simple acts of service, helping those in need creates a positive impact that extends far beyond the immediate moment. It strengthens communities, uplifts lives, and reminds humanity of the importance of caring for one another.
True generosity begins with a compassionate heart rather than the size of one’s contribution. A small gesture performed with sincerity often carries greater value than a large offering made for recognition or personal gain. Sharing resources with those who struggle can bring hope where there is despair and confidence where there is uncertainty. Every thoughtful action has the power to inspire others to follow the same path of kindness.
In many spiritual teachings, giving without expecting anything in return is regarded as a sacred practice. Such actions help reduce selfishness and attachment while nurturing humility and inner peace. When individuals learn to place the needs of others alongside their own, they develop a deeper understanding of compassion and unity. This attitude gradually transforms both the giver and the receiver, creating harmony in society.
Helping others is not limited to material support. Offering knowledge, guidance, encouragement, or even a listening ear can be equally meaningful. Volunteering time, teaching valuable skills, comforting someone in distress, or participating in community service all reflect the spirit of selfless giving. These efforts demonstrate that every individual has something valuable to contribute regardless of financial circumstances.
Children who grow up witnessing acts of generosity often develop strong moral values. They learn empathy, gratitude, and responsibility from observing parents, teachers, and elders who willingly support those in need. Such lessons remain with them throughout life, encouraging them to become compassionate citizens who actively contribute to the welfare of society. Building these values from an early age helps create a more caring and united future.
Selfless giving also promotes emotional and spiritual well-being. Numerous people experience a deep sense of fulfillment after helping someone without expecting recognition. The happiness that arises from easing another person’s difficulties cannot be measured by material standards. It creates lasting satisfaction and reminds individuals that true wealth lies in the ability to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Communities become stronger when people willingly support one another during times of hardship. Natural disasters, illness, poverty, and unexpected challenges often reveal the extraordinary kindness present within humanity. When individuals, organizations, and volunteers come together with a shared purpose, they can provide relief, restore hope, and rebuild lives. Collective compassion demonstrates the remarkable strength of unity and cooperation.
Ultimately, the greatest gift anyone can offer is a heart filled with love, kindness, and compassion. Selfless giving is not merely an occasional act but a way of life that reflects noble values and spiritual maturity. Every thoughtful deed, no matter how small, contributes to a better world where understanding, peace, and mutual respect flourish. By embracing generosity in daily life, people create a lasting legacy that inspires future generations to live with empathy, gratitude, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of all.
Selfless giving is also a powerful way to express gratitude for the blessings one has received. Every individual enjoys certain advantages, whether they are good health, education, supportive relationships, or financial stability. Sharing these blessings with those who are less fortunate reflects a thankful heart and acknowledges that life’s gifts are meant to benefit more than just ourselves. Gratitude naturally inspires generosity, creating a cycle of kindness that enriches both individuals and communities.
History is filled with inspiring examples of men and women who dedicated their lives to serving humanity. Their efforts transformed countless lives by providing education, healthcare, shelter, and hope to people facing difficult circumstances. Their legacy continues to inspire millions, proving that one person’s compassion can influence generations. Such examples remind us that greatness is measured not by personal achievements alone but by the positive impact left on others.
Giving should always be accompanied by respect and dignity. Those receiving support should never feel inferior or embarrassed. Instead, assistance should be offered with humility, kindness, and genuine concern. A warm smile, encouraging words, and respectful behavior often make the experience more meaningful than the material help itself. Compassion combined with dignity strengthens human relationships and fosters trust between people.
Modern technology has created countless opportunities to extend help across the world. Digital platforms make it possible to support educational initiatives, medical treatments, disaster relief efforts, environmental projects, and community development programs with just a few clicks. Social media also spreads awareness about important causes, encouraging people from different backgrounds to unite for meaningful purposes. Responsible use of technology can therefore become a valuable tool for serving humanity.
Acts of kindness are not limited by age, profession, or financial status. Students can tutor younger children, professionals can mentor aspiring individuals, retired people can volunteer their experience, and families can participate in community service together. Even simple daily actions such as sharing a meal, planting trees, donating books, or helping an elderly neighbor contribute to a more compassionate society. Every sincere effort, regardless of its size, carries immense value.
The workplace is another environment where generosity can flourish. Supporting colleagues during challenging times, encouraging teamwork, sharing knowledge, and recognizing the efforts of others create a positive atmosphere built on mutual respect. Organizations that promote compassion and social responsibility often inspire employees to contribute beyond their professional duties, resulting in stronger relationships and greater collective success.
Many spiritual traditions teach that every act of selfless service purifies the heart. When people perform good deeds without seeking praise or reward, they gradually overcome pride and selfishness. This inner transformation leads to greater peace, patience, and contentment. Service becomes not only a benefit to others but also a path toward personal growth and spiritual fulfillment.
Ultimately, a compassionate society is built through countless small acts of generosity performed every day. No contribution is ever too small when offered with sincerity and love. By choosing kindness over indifference and service over self-interest, every individual has the ability to brighten someone’s life. These simple yet meaningful actions create lasting ripples of hope, reminding humanity that true happiness is found in uplifting others and sharing life’s blessings with an open heart.
