Shiva Mahimna Stotram

atha śrī śivamahimnastōtram ॥

mahimnaḥ pāraṃ tē paramaviduṣō yadyasadṛśī
stutirbrahmādīnāmapi tadavasannāstvayi giraḥ ।
athā’vāchyaḥ sarvaḥ svamatipariṇāmāvadhi gṛṇan
mamāpyēṣa stōtrē hara nirapavādaḥ parikaraḥ ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning
O Hara, even the greatest sages cannot fully comprehend the limits of Your glory. If even the hymns of Brahma and the other great Devas fall short before Your infinite greatness, then their words too are inadequate. Yet everyone praises You according to the capacity of their own understanding. Therefore, this hymn of mine is also a humble effort within the limits of my ability and should not be considered improper.

atītaḥ panthānaṃ tava cha mahimā vāṅmanasayōḥ
atadvyāvṛttyā yaṃ chakitamabhidhattē śrutirapi ।
sa kasya stōtavyaḥ katividhaguṇaḥ kasya viṣayaḥ
padē tvarvāchīnē patati na manaḥ kasya na vachaḥ ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning
Your glory lies beyond the reach of both speech and mind. Even the Vedas point toward You through the negation “not this, not this.” Who can adequately praise such an infinite Reality? Who can know the countless qualities You possess or comprehend their extent? Yet who is there whose mind and speech do not attempt to approach You?

mama tvētāṃ vāṇīṃ guṇakathanapuṇyēna bhavataḥ

English Meaning
O Brahman, even the sweet and nectar-like speech of Brihaspati, the preceptor of the Devas, is no wonder when compared with Your infinite glory. Yet, O destroyer of Tripura, I have resolved to praise You so that my own speech may be purified by the sacred merit of describing Your divine qualities.

English Meaning
O Bestower of boons, Your supreme power performs the creation, preservation, and dissolution of the universe, represented through the three forms associated with the three gunas—Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra. Yet some people of limited understanding engage in pointless arguments that obscure this beautiful and profound truth.

atarkyaiśvaryē tvayyanavasara duḥsthō hatadhiyaḥ

English Meaning
Why did this universe arise? What is its nature? By what means was it created? What supports the three worlds? By what instrument and material does the Creator bring them into existence? Unable to comprehend Your inconceivable power, people of limited understanding engage in futile reasoning and thereby create confusion in the world.

English Meaning
Did these worlds come into existence without a cause? Can a universe possessing such ordered structure exist without a governing principle? Can the process of creation occur without acknowledging a supreme controller? If there were no Lord, who could bring the worlds into existence? O Supreme among the Devas, it is because of such limited understanding that some people doubt You.

English Meaning
The Vedas, Sankhya, Yoga, Pashupata, Vaishnava, and other spiritual paths each regard their own approach as the highest and most suitable. Because people differ in temperament and inclination, some follow straight paths while others follow winding and diverse ones. Yet, just as rivers flowing through different routes ultimately merge into the same ocean, all these paths ultimately lead to You.

English Meaning
O Bestower of boons, the bull, Khatvanga, axe, animal skin, sacred ash, serpents, skull, and other symbols form the external attributes of Your divine form. The prosperity enjoyed by the Devas arises merely from the movement of Your eyebrow. One who rejoices in the Self is never deluded by the mirage of worldly pleasures.

English Meaning
One person declares that everything is eternal, another says that everything is transient, while yet another holds different views concerning what is eternal and non-eternal. Thus, many conflicting doctrines exist regarding the nature of the universe. O destroyer of Tripura, amid all these differing opinions, I hesitate even while praising You, because my bold words are so insignificant before Your infinite glory.

tatō bhaktiśraddhā-bharaguru-gṛṇadbhyāṃ giriśa yat

English Meaning
O Girisha, when Brahma and Vishnu attempted to discover the upper and lower limits of Your infinite form as a pillar of fire, neither could reach its end. They then praised You with profound devotion and faith, and You revealed Yourself to them. This demonstrates that sincere devotion directed toward You never goes without its fruit.

English Meaning
O destroyer of Tripura, Ravana gained dominion over the three worlds and, driven by the desire for battle, displayed the immense strength of his many arms. Yet when he worshipped Your lotus feet by offering his heads like a row of lotuses, the power arising from his steadfast devotion to You became even more formidable. This was a striking manifestation of the strength of unwavering devotion.

alabhyā pātālē’pyalasachalitāṅguṣṭhaśirasi
pratiṣṭhā tvayyāsīd dhruvamupachitō muhyati khalaḥ ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning
Having gained strength through his service to You, Ravana attempted to display the power of his mighty arms by lifting Mount Kailasa, Your abode. Yet with merely a slight movement of Your toe, Kailasa remained firmly established and Ravana was pressed down. This shows that even one who has accumulated great power can become deluded through pride and arrogance.

English Meaning
O Bestower of boons, Bana, who commanded the service of the beings of the three worlds, brought even the great prosperity of Indra beneath his own power. Yet this is not surprising, because bowing one’s head at Your feet becomes a source of elevation and greatness for anyone.

English Meaning
O Three-eyed Lord, when the Devas and Asuras became terrified that the poison arising from the churning of the ocean might bring about the destruction of the universe, You swallowed it and saved creation. The dark mark in Your throat does not diminish Your beauty; rather, this transformation is glorious because it arose from Your willingness to remove the fear of the entire world.

English Meaning
O Lord, the arrows of Kama, the god of desire, had never failed among Devas, Asuras, or human beings. Yet when Kama turned his attention toward You, who are utterly beyond all ordinary beings, he was reduced to ashes by the fire of Your third eye. Thus, one who is self-controlled cannot be overcome by pride or the forces of uncontrolled desire.

English Meaning
At the impact of Your feet, the Earth suddenly trembles. The movement of Your dance causes even Vishnu’s step to be disturbed, while the mighty motion of Your arms shakes the planetary hosts. The edges of Your freely flowing matted locks repeatedly strike and disturb the heavens. O Lord, You dance for the protection of the universe; surely, Your divine power is beyond ordinary comprehension.

English Meaning
The stream of Ganga upon Your head extends through the heavens and shines like foam filled with countless stars. Though it appears tiny when viewed from Earth, its cosmic presence suggests the vastness of the worlds and their encircling oceans. From this alone, the immeasurable glory of Your divine form can be understood.

didhakṣōstē kō’yaṃ tripuratṛṇamāḍambara-vidhiḥ
vidhēyaiḥ krīḍantyō na khalu paratantrāḥ prabhudhiyaḥ ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning
When You set out to destroy Tripura, the Earth became Your chariot, Brahma became the charioteer, Mount Meru became the bow, the Sun and Moon became the wheels, and Vishnu Himself became the arrow. O Lord, such an elaborate arrangement to burn something as insignificant as a blade of grass-like Tripura is truly Your divine play. The all-powerful Lord plays with the instruments under His command; He is never dependent upon them.

English Meaning
Lord Hari offered a thousand lotuses at Your feet in worship. When one lotus was found missing, He offered His own eye as a substitute, treating it as a lotus. His profound devotion reached such fulfillment that He became established as the wielder of the discus. O destroyer of Tripura, this devotion remains a living force for the protection of the three worlds.

atastvāṃ samprēkṣya kratuṣu phaladāna-pratibhuvaṃ

English Meaning
When the performer of a sacrifice sleeps, You remain awake to bestow the fruits of his actions. Without You, how could an action that has already been completed produce its appropriate result? Therefore, recognizing You as the assured giver of the fruits of sacrifices and actions, people place their faith in the Vedas and undertake their duties with firm resolve.

English Meaning
O Giver of refuge, Daksha was skilled in ritual action and was regarded as the lord of sacrifices, while the sages served as priests and the Devas as members of the sacrificial assembly. Yet the sacrifice was destroyed because You were disregarded. Without You, who bestows the fruits of sacrifice, a ritual performed without true faith inevitably becomes fruitless or even harmful to its performer.

English Meaning
O Lord, Prajapati became improperly attached to his own daughter and pursued her after assuming the form of a deer. You then took the form of the divine hunter, holding a bow, and pursued him. Struck with fear by Your presence and arrow, he is said to remain fearful even today.

English Meaning
O destroyer of Tripura, Kama, confident in his own beauty and power, raised his bow and attempted to influence You. Yet he was instantly reduced to ashes like a blade of grass by the fire of Your third eye. If anyone, seeing that half of Your form is united with the Goddess, mistakes You for an ordinary object of worldly attraction, that person has failed to understand Your transcendent nature.

English Meaning
O destroyer of Kama, You sport in cremation grounds, spirits accompany You, funeral ash adorns Your body, and a garland of human skulls serves as Your ornament. Though these things appear inauspicious from an ordinary worldly perspective, O Bestower of boons, You are the supreme auspiciousness for those who remember You.

English Meaning
When yogis turn their minds inward and control the vital breath, their bodies become filled with spiritual ecstasy and their eyes overflow with tears of joy. Beholding and meditating upon You, they become immersed in a lake of immortal bliss and experience within themselves the supreme Reality—which is none other than You.

English Meaning
You are the Sun, the Moon, the wind, the fire, the waters, the sky, the Earth, and the very Self. We attempt to describe You through these limited expressions, but we do not know what You are not, for You pervade and transcend all existence.

English Meaning
O Giver of refuge, the three sounds A, U, and M within Om symbolize the three Vedas, the three states of experience, the three worlds, and the three principal divine manifestations. Beyond these is Your fourth state, Turiya. The subtle sound of Om encompasses both Your total and differentiated manifestations.

English Meaning
O Lord, Bhava, Sharva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahadeva, Bhima, and Ishana are Your eight sacred names. The Shrutis themselves reveal Your divine nature through each of these names. Therefore, I bow with devotion to this beloved and sacred manifestation of Yours.

English Meaning
Salutations to You who are nearest and also beyond the farthest reach. O destroyer of Kama, salutations to You who are both the smallest and the greatest. O Three-eyed Lord, salutations to You who are both the most ancient and ever-new. Salutations to You in every form and to the One who transcends all that can be described as “this” or “that.”

English Meaning
When creation arises through the predominance of Rajas, salutations again and again to Bhava. When dissolution takes place through the power of Tamas, salutations to Hara. When the predominance of Sattva brings happiness and welfare to beings, salutations to Mrida. And salutations to Shiva, the supreme radiant Reality beyond all three gunas.

English Meaning
How can my limited and fragile mind, which is subject to suffering, ever compare with Your eternal and boundless glory? Seeing this vast difference, I am filled with wonder. Yet, O Bestower of boons, devotion has removed my hesitation and inspired me to offer these flowers of speech at Your feet.

English Meaning
If the black mountain were made into ink, the ocean into an inkpot, the branch of the celestial wish-fulfilling tree into a pen, and the entire Earth into paper, and if Goddess Sarasvati were to write forever, even then, O Lord, she could never reach the end of Your divine qualities.

Initiation, charity, austerity, pilgrimage, spiritual knowledge, sacrifices, and other sacred practices together do not equal even one-sixteenth of the merit obtained by reciting the Shiva Mahimna Stotra.

English Meaning
The king of the Gandharvas, named Kusumadanta, was a servant of Shiva, the God of gods who bears the Moon upon His head. Having fallen from his own exalted state because of Shiva’s displeasure, he composed this supremely divine hymn in praise of the Lord’s glory.

English Meaning
Here concludes this sacred and meritorious hymn composed and spoken by the Gandharva. It is incomparable, captivating to the mind, and entirely devoted to describing the nature and glory of the Supreme Lord.
