Suraj Kund Temple is an ancient Sun Temple situated about 1.5 km east of Sunam town in Sangrur district, Punjab.

The site is referred to as “Surajpur” in ancient records and is believed to date back to the Vedic period.

History of the Temple

The temple dates to the Vedic era, with its original name being Surajpur, located near the ancient Saraswati River. It was built near an old fort-citadel that hosted the temple complex.

According to historians, the temple was destroyed during Timur’s or Mahmud of Ghazni’s invasion, leaving the Kund in a dilapidated state.

The site is also referenced by Al-Biruni in his 11th-century work Kitab-ul-Hind, indicating its importance even in medieval times.

Architecture of the Temple

The Kund itself is semi‑circular or amphitheatre-shaped, built from stone steps designed in the form of a rising sun—a classic Surya Kund layout.

Surrounding the kund are verandahs on all sides, with three small temples nearby, including shrines for Lord Shiva, Sita, and Bharat.
