Divine Supreme’s Sole, ‘Soulful’ Desire – Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu
Why ‘Samastha Lokah…?’ and what is Its added significance?? …and why this transition from ‘Lokah Samastha…‘ into ‘Samastha Lokah…’??? What, Why and many a question can be raised by many minds that dwell in doubts and resort to arguments, but the very fact that the Maha Mantra was borne of The Lord Supreme, in His natural flow sans any pretence, negates all arguments, simply surrendering to His Will Supreme. Does not The Mother know the need of Her child?
If the Maha Mantra was introduced by Bhagawan with His Divine Sankalpa of Cosmic, all- embracing expansion, Samastha Lokah… does cover anything and everything, most unconditionally, rightfully endorsing the legacy of Sri Sathya Sai, that being Love… All-Embracing Love…Unconditional Love… Love That Conquers… simply L-O-V-E!!!
“Samastha Lokah…” is undoubtedly the One Off Universal Maha Mantra that claims credit to Its being from Bhagawan in His physical form. Most of the other Mantras claim their origin from the Vedic time, perceived internally by great and elevated souls. …And such a Maha Mantra that claims its origin from the Divine Resolve Of the Supreme-Most Avatar, One Who Is hailed as The Sarvadevathaatheetha Swarupa, (The Divine Form beyond all other forms) must definitely be power-packed with Intention Of That WholeSome Divinity – The Supreme Resolve.
What could be this power-packed intention from a human perception? The Supreme Lord, from Whose Resolve sprang out this vast creation that include human beings, made humans, the highest of beings with reference to conscious expansion, in His own image… and thus, does want humans to raise to His level of vastness… expansion… becoming That… by Becoming and thus Be, His True Self, Embodiment of Love. This is clear from His ‘own’ words, wherein He spelt out God’s single-most desire in no uncertain terms….
Concluding His Dasara Divine discourse in 2009, Bhagawan spoke thus:
“God illumines the entire universe as the Atma Tatwa (Innate Divine Principle) immanent in all the living beings and objects. Even though God may appear to be involved in so many activities in the world, it is verily for the pleasure of His devotees. He has no desire of His own. He has only one desire – Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu!”
This Mantra stands as the Mantra beyond all other Mantras.. as it is completely selfless and cosmically vast… Pointing to His physical body, He said once that, He Is ‘top-to-toe’ selfless. Indeed, it can be rightly perceived that, this Supreme Lord, Who created man in His own image, does ‘desire’ man to be unmade and remade as… His own… reflecting The Truth beyond all truths, The Essential Sai Para Brahmam.
At a time when Kali is raging to its peak, The Supreme Godhood introduced this Maha Mantra as the panacea for all universal and cosmic maladies. Bhagawan, Who Is verily The Pulse of time, delivered it to the humans at the right time, for him to use it most effectively.
Anyone who tries this Mantra with an innate feeling of Love is sure to experience EXPANSION soon… and thus entitled to ‘Become and Be’, becoming One With Him… The Master Supreme! Sri Sathya Sai – The ‘True’ SadhGuru!!!
Can We Hear Him Whispering… “Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu”!!!
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu – A Sacred Prayer Of Universal Peace And Compassion
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is a divine prayer that expands the heart beyond personal needs, family boundaries, religion, nation, and human limitation. It is a prayer for the happiness, peace, and welfare of all beings in all worlds. When this prayer is repeated with sincerity, it awakens compassion and reminds us that all life is connected through the Divine.
Most people begin prayer with personal desires. They ask for health, success, protection, comfort, and peace for themselves and their loved ones. Such prayers are natural, but spiritual maturity begins when our prayer becomes wider. A heart that can wish well for all beings becomes softer, purer, and closer to God.
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu teaches that devotion should not remain selfish. If we love God, we must also love His creation. Every person, animal, bird, tree, river, mountain, and living being has a place in the divine order. To pray for all is to recognize that the joy and suffering of creation are not separate from us.
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba often gave great importance to universal love and selfless service. His message, “Love All, Serve All; Help Ever, Hurt Never,” carries the same spirit as this sacred prayer. It reminds us that prayer must become action and that love must express itself through service.
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu becomes meaningful when it changes our daily behavior. If we chant for universal peace but speak harshly, judge others, hurt living beings, or ignore suffering, then the prayer remains incomplete. The true practice of this prayer is seen in kind words, helpful actions, pure thoughts, and responsible living.
This prayer also teaches unity. Human beings often divide themselves by caste, religion, language, wealth, nationality, and personal opinion. But the Divine does not create such narrowness in the heart. When we pray for the welfare of all worlds, we rise above small thinking and begin to feel that all beings are children of the same Supreme Reality.
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu also reminds us that peace must begin within. A restless mind cannot spread peace. An angry heart cannot create harmony. Through prayer, meditation, namasmarana, bhajan, and selfless service, the mind becomes calmer and the heart becomes more compassionate. Inner peace slowly becomes outer peace.
The welfare of the world is connected with our smallest actions. Feeding someone who is hungry, helping someone who is weak, comforting someone who is sad, protecting nature, caring for animals, and avoiding waste are all practical expressions of universal love. Service makes prayer visible and meaningful.
Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu finally teaches that compassion should not be selective. It is easy to pray for those we like, but true spiritual growth asks us to pray for all, including those who oppose us, misunderstand us, or live in ignorance. Such prayer does not support wrong action; it asks for light, wisdom, and transformation.
A devotee who lives this prayer becomes careful in thought, word, and deed. He does not want to add pain to the world. He speaks gently, acts responsibly, and serves humbly. He understands that every being is seeking happiness and freedom from suffering. This understanding brings patience and kindness.
The prayer also creates gratitude. The earth supports us, water nourishes us, air sustains us, sunlight blesses us, and countless beings contribute silently to our life. When we realize this, we stop living only for ourselves. We begin to live as caretakers of God’s creation.
In the end, Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is not only a chant, but a way of life. It asks us to pray for all, love all, serve all, and hurt none. When this sacred feeling enters our thoughts, words, and actions, life becomes peaceful, compassionate, and blessed with divine grace.
