Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu – Prayer For ‘Worlds Many… Worlds All…’

For the jeeva (individual) who is made in His ‘own’ image, is there anything bigger or better or more important than knowing his own self, The Truth behind his existence? When he does this, the world around him pales into insignificance, establishing him in Oneness. And for those devout folks, who with passionate devotion follow Him, The Avatar Supreme Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai, there can be nothing beyond than THE COSMIC BEAUTY BEYOND COMPARE!!!

Amid changing scenarios and apparent threatening developments of global magnitude, he, one who is His true devotee is sure to follow Him with love and gratitude, knowing and understanding everything as His Divine Sport. With this inner awareness, he stands focused, knowing and seeing Him and His Hands in everything around. Here, every looming threat that seems to endanger His creation becomes His own blind-fold game, a reminder from Him to His own images and reflections, you and me and everyone.

On that infinitely fateful day of 31st August 2008, Beloved Bhagawan, addressing a selected congregation of His White Army in Prasanthi Nilayam spoke of the Cosmic MahaMantra, ‘Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu’ introducing the same, rephrasing the already existing one from the Vedic lore.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu – A Sacred Prayer For Universal Peace And Welfare

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is a beautiful universal prayer that carries the spirit of compassion, unity, and selfless love. It is not a prayer only for oneself, one family, one religion, or one nation. It is a prayer for the welfare, happiness, and peace of all beings in all worlds. Such a prayer expands the heart beyond selfish limits.

In ordinary life, people usually pray for personal needs: health, success, protection, money, family peace, or relief from difficulties. These prayers are natural, but spiritual maturity begins when our prayer becomes wider. When we begin to wish happiness for everyone, the heart becomes more pure and closer to the Divine.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu teaches that true devotion cannot remain narrow. If we love God, we must also love His creation. Every human being, animal, bird, tree, river, mountain, and living form is part of the same divine creation. A heart that prays for all begins to see life with compassion and responsibility.

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba gave great importance to universal love and service. His message, “Love All, Serve All; Help Ever, Hurt Never,” reflects the same spirit of this sacred prayer. It reminds devotees that prayer must become action. We should not only wish peace for the world, but also live in a way that creates peace.

When we pray for the happiness of all beings, we reduce hatred within ourselves. It becomes harder to harm someone when we sincerely wish their welfare. Anger, jealousy, pride, and selfishness begin to weaken when the heart becomes broad. Universal prayer slowly purifies personal emotions and makes the mind more peaceful.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu becomes meaningful when it changes our daily conduct. If we chant this prayer but continue to speak harshly, judge others, waste resources, or ignore suffering, then the prayer remains incomplete. Its true meaning is fulfilled when our thoughts become kind, our words become gentle, and our actions become helpful.

The prayer also reminds us that the world is deeply connected. The pain of one person, one community, one species, or one part of nature cannot be separated from the whole. When people suffer, society suffers. When nature is harmed, humanity suffers. When hatred spreads, peace becomes weak. Therefore, praying for all is also praying for harmony in life.

A devotee should understand that peace begins within. We cannot bring peace to the world if our own hearts are full of restlessness and anger. Inner peace grows through prayer, meditation, namasmarana, self-control, forgiveness, and selfless service. When individuals become peaceful, families become peaceful. When families become peaceful, society becomes peaceful.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu also teaches the value of nonviolence. Hurting others through thoughts, words, or actions disturbs the sacred balance of life. A peaceful person tries to avoid causing pain. Such a person speaks carefully, acts responsibly, and treats all beings with respect. This is practical spirituality.

Universal welfare is not only a high idea; it begins with small actions. Feeding someone who is hungry, comforting someone who is sad, helping a student, caring for the sick, protecting animals, planting trees, and avoiding waste are all expressions of this prayer. Service makes prayer visible.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu finally reminds us that the highest happiness is not selfish pleasure, but shared well-being. A person who thinks only of personal comfort may still feel empty. But a person who prays for all and serves with love experiences a deeper joy. This joy comes from unity with the Divine will.

The prayer also teaches humility. We are not the owners of the world; we are caretakers. The earth, water, air, sunlight, food, and life itself are gifts from God. When we live with gratitude, we become careful in how we use these blessings. A grateful heart naturally becomes a responsible heart.

In the end, Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu is a sacred call to expand love beyond boundaries and live for the good of all. It asks us to pray sincerely, serve selflessly, speak kindly, and protect creation with reverence. When this prayer becomes part of our thoughts, words, and actions, life becomes peaceful, compassionate, and blessed with divine grace.
