Saraswati Suktam (Rigveda)

i̠yam̍ adadāt rabha̠sam ṛ̍ṇa̠chyuta̠ṃ divō̎dāsaṃ vadhrya̠śvāya̍ dā̠śuṣē̎ ।
This Sarasvatī granted powerful support to the generous devotee Divodāsa, who was free from debt and protected the worshipper Vadhryaśva.

yā śaśva̎ntam ācha̠khādā̎va̠saṃ pa̠ṇi̠ṃ tā tē̎ dā̠trāṇi̍ tavi̠ṣā sa̍rasvati ॥ 1 ॥

O Sarasvatī, your mighty gifts destroyed the deceitful and selfish forces that continuously obstructed truth and righteousness.

i̠yaṃ śuṣmē̎bhir bīsa̠khā iva̍ āruja̠t sānu̍ girī̠ṇā̍ṃ tavi̠ṣēbhi̍r ū̠rmibhi̍ḥ ॥

Like a strong force breaking lotus stems, Sarasvatī with her powerful waves breaks through the peaks of mountains and removes obstacles with divine strength.

pā̠rā̠va̠ta̠ghnīm ava̍sē suvṛ̠ktibhi̍ḥ sara̍svatī̠ mā vi̍vāsēma dhī̠tibhi̍ḥ ॥ 2 ॥

May we never be separated from Sarasvatī, who destroys distant enemies and grants protection through pure prayers and wisdom.

sara̍svati dēva̠nidō̠ ni ba̍rhaya pra̠jāṃ viśva̍sya̠ bṛsa̍yasya mā̠yina̍ḥ ॥

O Sarasvatī, remove those who oppose the divine order and destroy the deceptive forces that trouble creation.

u̠ta kṣi̠tibhyō̠-‘vanī̎r avindō vi̠ṣamē̎bhyō asravō vājinīvati ॥ 3 ॥

O giver of strength, you discovered safe paths for beings and protected them from dangers and difficulties.

praṇō̎ dē̠vī sara̍svatī̠ vājē̎bhir vā̠jinī̎vatī । dhī̠nāma̍vi̠trya̍vatu ॥ 4 ॥

May the divine Sarasvatī, rich in spiritual power and nourishment, protect our intellect, thoughts, and wisdom.

yastvā̎ dēvi sarasvaty upabrū̠tē dhanē̎ hi̠tē । indra̠nna vṛ̍tra̠tūryē̎ ॥ 5 ॥

O Goddess Sarasvatī, whoever approaches you seeking wealth and prosperity receives support like Indra receives victory in battle against obstacles.

tvaṃ dē̎vi sarasva̠ty avā̠ vājē̎ṣu vājini । radā̎ pū̠ṣēva̍ naḥ sa̠nim ॥ 6 ॥

O Goddess Sarasvatī, grant us strength and abundance in all endeavors, just as Pūṣan grants nourishment and prosperity.

u̠ta syā na̠ḥ sara̍svatī ghō̠rā hira̎ṇyavartanīḥ । vṛ̠tra̠ghnī va̍ṣṭi suṣṭu̠tim ॥ 7 ॥

May Sarasvatī, radiant like gold and powerful against obstacles, accept our beautiful praises and blessings.

yasyā̎ ana̠ntō ahru̍tastvē̠ṣaścha̍ri̠ṣṇura̎rṇa̠vaḥ । ama̠ścharati̠ rōru̍vat ॥ 8 ॥

Her endless, unstoppable and mighty flow moves like a roaring ocean, carrying immense power throughout creation.

sā nō̠ viśvā̠ ati̠ dviṣa̠ḥ svasṝ̎r anyā ṛ̠tāva̍rī । ata̠nnahē̎va̠ sūrya̍ḥ ॥ 9 ॥

May Sarasvatī, who follows the path of truth, overcome all enemies and remove darkness like the Sun removes night.

u̠ta na̍ḥ pri̠yā pri̠yāsu̍ sa̠ptasva̍sā̠ suju̍ṣṭā । sara̍svatī̠ stōmyā̎ bhūt ॥ 10 ॥

May Sarasvatī, beloved among the seven sacred rivers and sisters, become pleased with our sincere praises.

ā̠pa̠pruṣī̠ pārthi̍vānyu̠ru rajō̎ a̠ntari̍kṣam । sara̍svatī ni̠daspā̎tu ॥ 11 ॥

Sarasvatī fills the earthly realms and the vast atmosphere. May she protect us from those who speak falsely or harmfully.

tri̠ṣa̠dhasthā̎ sa̠ptadhā̎tu̠ḥ pañcha̍ jā̠tā va̠rdhaya̎ntī । vājē̎vājē̠ havyā̎ bhūt ॥ 12 ॥

Dwelling in three realms and possessing seven forms of nourishment, Sarasvatī increases prosperity and becomes worthy of offerings in every sacred act.

pra yā ma̍hi̠mnā ma̠hinā̎su̠ chēki̍tē dyu̠mnēbhi̍r a̠nyā a̠pasā̎m apa̍stamā ॥

Sarasvatī shines with supreme greatness among all divine powers and surpasses other streams of energy with her brilliance.

ratha̍ iva bṛha̠tī vi̠bhvanē̎ kṛ̠tōpa̠stutyā̎ chiki̠tuṣā̠ sara̍svatī ॥ 13 ॥

Like a magnificent chariot moving forward, Sarasvatī spreads wisdom and is praised by those who possess understanding.

sara̍svaty abhi nō̎ nēṣi̠ vasyō̠ māpa̍ spharī̠ḥ paya̍sā̠ mā na̠ ā dha̍k ॥

O Sarasvatī, lead us toward prosperity. Do not abandon us; nourish us with your divine flow.

ju̠ṣasva̍ naḥ sa̠khyā vē̠śyā̎ cha̠ mā tva-tkṣētrā̠ṇy ara̍ṇāni ganma ॥ 14 ॥

Accept our friendship and devotion. May we never be separated from your sacred protection and blessings.

pra kṣōda̍sā̠ dhāya̍sā sasra ē̠ṣā sara̍svatī dha̠ruṇa̠māya̍sī̠ pūḥ ॥

Sarasvatī flows with nourishing waters, powerful and steady like an iron fortress protecting all beings.

pra̠bāba̍dhānā ra̠thyē̎va yāti̠ viśvā̎ a̠pō ma̍hi̠nā sindhu̍r a̠nyāḥ ॥ 15 ॥

She moves forward like a mighty chariot, surpassing other rivers through her greatness and divine strength.

ēkā̎chēta̠t sara̍svatī na̠dīnā̠ṃ śuchi̎r ya̠tī gi̠ribhya̠ ā sa̍mu̠drāt ।
rā̠yaśchēta̎ntī̠ bhuva̍nasya̠ bhūrē̎r ghṛ̠taṃ payō̎ duduhē̠ nāhu̍ṣāya ॥ 16 ॥

Sarasvatī is the foremost and purest among rivers. Flowing from the mountains to the ocean, she brings prosperity and nourishes the world. She gives abundant richness and sacred nourishment to humanity.

sa vā̎vṛdhē̠ naryō̠ yōṣa̍ṇāsu̠ vṛṣā̠ śiśu̎r vṛṣa̠bhō ya̠jñiyā̎su ।
sa vā̠jinā̎ṃ ma̠ghava̍dbhyō dadhāti̠ vi sā̠tayē̎ ta̠nva̎ṃ māmṛjīta ॥ 17 ॥

Sarasvatī grows in strength among people like a powerful and nurturing force. She grants energy, prosperity, and blessings to those who perform sacred actions and seek divine grace.

u̠ta syā na̠ḥ sara̍svatī juṣā̠ṇōpa̍ śravatsu̠bhagā̎ ya̠jñē a̠smin ।
mi̠tajñu̍bhir nama̠syai̎r iyā̠nā rā̠yā yu̠jā chi̠d uttara̠ sakhi̍bhyaḥ ॥ 18 ॥

May Sarasvatī be pleased with our worship and sacred offerings. Accompanied by devotion and humility, may she come to us with prosperity and grant greater blessings than our companions.

i̠mā juhvā̎nā yu̠ṣmadā namō̎bhi̠ḥ prati̠ stōma̎ṃ sarasvati juṣasva ।
tava̠ śarma̎n pri̠yata̍mē̠ dadhā̎nā̠ upa̍ sthēyāma śara̠ṇaṃ na vṛ̠kṣam ॥ 19 ॥

O Sarasvatī, accept these praises offered with reverence. Under your most beloved protection, may we approach you like one seeking shelter beneath a great tree.

a̠yamu̍ tē sarasvati̠ vasi̍ṣṭhō̠ dvārā̎vṛ̠tasya̍ subhagē̠ vyā̎vaḥ ।
vardha̍ śubhrē stuva̠tē rā̎si̠ vājā̍nyū̠yaṃ pā̎ta sva̠stibhi̠ḥ sadā̎ naḥ ॥ 20 ॥

O fortunate Sarasvatī, sage Vasiṣṭha approaches your sacred entrance with prayers. O radiant Goddess, increase the strength and prosperity of those who praise you and always protect us with auspicious blessings.

bṛ̠had u̍ gāyiṣē̠ vacō̎-‘su̠ryā̎ na̠dīnā̎m ।
sara̍svatī̠m in ma̍hayā suvṛ̠ktibhi̠ḥ stōmai̎r vasiṣṭha̠ rōda̍sī ॥ 21 ॥

I sing a great hymn in praise of Sarasvatī, the powerful and divine among rivers. O Vasiṣṭha, glorify Sarasvatī with pure praises that illuminate both heaven and earth.

u̠bhē yattē̎ mahi̠nā śu̍bhrē̠ andha̍sī adhikṣi̠yanti̍ pū̠rava̍ḥ ।
sā nō̎ bōdhyavi̠trī ma̠rutsa̍khā̠ chōda̠ rādhō̎ ma̠ghōnā̎m ॥ 22 ॥

O radiant Sarasvatī, your greatness extends across both realms. May you awaken and inspire us, accompanied by the Maruts, and guide us toward wealth and divine blessings.

bha̠dram id bha̠drā kṛ̍ṇava̠t sara̍sva̠ty aka̍vārī chētati vā̠jinī̎vatī ।
gṛ̠ṇā̠nā ja̍madagni̠vat stuvā̠nā cha̍ vasiṣṭha̠vat ॥ 23 ॥

Sarasvatī, who grants auspiciousness and abundance, brings blessings to those who praise her. May she bestow wisdom and prosperity like she did for sages such as Jamadagni and Vasiṣṭha.

ja̠nī̠yantō̠ nvagra̍vaḥ putrī̠yanta̍ḥ su̠dāna̍vaḥ ।
sara̍svantaṃ havāmahē ॥ 24 ॥

Those who desire knowledge, prosperity, and noble descendants call upon Sarasvatī, seeking her divine support and blessings.

yē tē̎ sarasva ū̠rmaya̠ḥ madhu̍mantō ghṛta̠śchuta̍ḥ ।
tēbhi̎r nō-‘vi̠tā bha̠va ॥ 25 ॥

O Sarasvatī, may your sweet and nourishing waves filled with divine essence protect and bless us.

pī̠pi̠vāṃsa̠ṃ sara̍svata̠ḥ stana̠ṃ yō vi̠śvada̍rśataḥ ।
bha̠kṣī̠mahi̍ pra̠jāmiṣam̎ ॥ 26 ॥

May we receive the nourishing essence of Sarasvatī, whose divine flow is visible throughout the universe, granting prosperity, wisdom, and life-sustaining strength.

ambi̍tamē̠ nadī̎tamē̠ dēvi̍tamē̠ sara̍svati ।
a̠pra̠śa̠stā i̍va smasi̠ praśa̍stim amba naḥ kṛdhi ॥ 27 ॥

O Sarasvatī, best among mothers, rivers, and goddesses, we appear insignificant before you. O Divine Mother, grant us honor, recognition, and greatness.

tvē viśvā̎ sarasvati śri̠tāyū̎ṃṣi dē̠vyām ।
śu̠nahō̎trēṣu matsva pra̠jāṃ dē̎vi didiḍḍhi naḥ ॥ 28 ॥

O Sarasvatī, all forms of life depend upon you. Be pleased with our offerings and bless us with noble children, wisdom, and divine prosperity.

i̠mā brahma̍ sarasvati ju̠ṣasva̍ vājinīvati ।
yā tē̠ manma̍ gṛtsama̠dā ṛ̍tāvari pri̠yā dē̠vēṣu̠ juhva̍ti ॥ 29 ॥

O Sarasvatī, accept these sacred prayers and hymns offered to you. These words of devotion, loved by the righteous, are presented to you with reverence.

pā̠va̠kā na̠ḥ sara̍svatī̠ vājē̎bhir vā̠jinī̎vatī ।
ya̠jñaṃ va̍ṣṭu dhi̠yāva̍suḥ ॥ 30 ॥

May the pure Sarasvatī, rich in strength and blessings, accept and protect our sacred sacrifices through her divine wisdom.

chō̠da̠yi̠trī sū̠nṛtā̎nā̠ṃ chēta̎ntī sumatī̠nām ।
ya̠jñaṃ dadhē̠ sara̍svatī ॥ 31 ॥

Sarasvatī inspires truthful speech and noble thoughts. She awakens wisdom and establishes sacred actions and spiritual practices.

ma̠hō arṇa̠ḥ sara̍svatī̠ pra chē̎tayati kē̠tunā̎ ।
dhiyō̠ viśvā̠ vi rā̎jati ॥ 32 ॥

Sarasvatī, like a vast and powerful ocean, awakens consciousness and shines brightly through all forms of intelligence.

sara̍svatīṃ dēva̠yantō̎ havantē̠ sara̍svatīm adhva̠rē tā̠yamā̎nē ।
sara̍svatīṃ su̠kṛtō̎ ahvayanta̠ sara̍svatī dā̠śuṣē̠ vārya̎ṃ dāt ॥ 33 ॥

Those who seek divine blessings invoke Sarasvatī. During sacred sacrifices, righteous people call upon her, and Sarasvatī grants valuable gifts, prosperity, and divine blessings to those who worship with devotion.

sara̍svati̠ yā sa̠ratha̎ṃ ya̠yātha̍ sva̠dhābhi̍r dēvi pi̠tṛbhi̠r mada̎ntī ।
ā̠sadyā̠smin ba̠rhiṣi̍ mādayasvānamī̠vā iṣa̠ ā dhē̎hy a̠smē ॥ 34 ॥

O Sarasvatī, Divine Goddess, come with the ancestors who rejoice through sacred offerings. Sit upon this sacred seat and bless us with nourishment, protection, and freedom from illness.

sara̍svatī̠ṃ yāṃ pi̠tarō̠ hava̎ntē dakṣi̠ṇā ya̠jñam a̍bhi̠nakṣa̍māṇāḥ ।
sa̠ha̠srā̠rgham i̠ḷō atra̍ bhā̠gaṃ rā̠yaspōṣa̠ṃ yaja̍mānēṣu dhēhi ॥ 35 ॥

The ancestors invoke Sarasvatī while participating in sacred rituals. May she grant abundant prosperity, nourishment, and divine wealth to those who perform righteous sacrifices.

ā nō̎ di̠vō bṛ̍ha̠taḥ parva̍tā̠d ā sara̍svatī yaja̠tā ga̎ntu ya̠jñam ।
hava̎ṃ dē̠vī ju̍juṣā̠ṇā ghṛ̠tācī̎ śa̠gmā̎n nō̠ vāca̍m uśa̠tī śṛ̍ṇōtu ॥ 36 ॥

May Sarasvatī, worthy of worship, come to our sacrifice from the vast heavens and mountains. May the Divine Goddess, pleased with our offerings, hear our prayers and bless our speech with purity and sweetness.

rā̠kām ahaṃ su̠havā̎ṃ suṣṭu̠tī hu̍vē śṛ̠ṇōtu̍ naḥ su̠bhagā̠ bōdha̍tu̠ tmanā̎ ।
sīvya̠tv apa̍ḥ sū̠cyā̎c chi̍dyamānayā̠ dadā̎tu vī̠raṃ śa̠tadā̎yam ukthyam̎ ॥ 37 ॥

I invoke Goddess Rākā, who is easily pleased and worthy of praise. May she listen to our prayers, grant understanding, protect our works, and bless us with heroic and long-lasting prosperity.

yāstē̎ rākē suma̠taya̍ḥ su̠pēśa̍sō̠ yābhi̠r dadā̎si dā̠śuṣē̠ vasū̎ni ।
tābhi̎r nō adya su̠manā̎ upāga̍hi sahasrapō̠ṣaṃ su̍bhagē̠ rarā̎ṇā ॥ 38 ॥

O Rākā, through your beautiful and benevolent thoughts you grant wealth to devotees. Come to us today with a joyful heart and bless us with abundant prosperity and growth.

sinī̎vāli̠ pṛthu̍ṣṭukē̠ yā dē̠vānā̠m asi̠ svasā̎ ।
ju̠ṣasva̍ ha̠vyam āhu̍taṃ pra̠jāṃ dē̎vi didiḍḍhi naḥ ॥ 39 ॥

O Sinīvālī, sister of the divine beings and giver of abundance, accept our sacred offerings and bless us with noble children and prosperity.

yā su̍bā̠huḥ sva̎ṅgu̠riḥ su̠ṣūmā̎ bahu̠sūva̍rī ।
tasyai̎ vi̠śpatnyai̎ ha̠viḥ sinīvā̠lyai ju̍hōtana ॥ 40 ॥

Offer this sacred oblation to Sinīvālī, the divine power who possesses beautiful hands, graceful fingers, and the ability to grant abundant blessings and creation.

yā gu̠ṅgūr yā si̍nīvā̠lī yā rā̠kā yā sara̍svatī ।
i̠ndrā̠ṇīm ahva ū̠tayē̎ varuṇā̠nīṃ sva̠stayē̎ ॥ 41 ॥

We invoke Guṅgū, Sinīvālī, Rākā, and Sarasvatī for protection and support. May Indrāṇī grant us strength and Varuṇānī bless us with auspiciousness and well-being.

ōṃ śānti̠ḥ śānti̠ḥ śānti̍ḥ ॥

Om. May there be peace, peace, and peace in all realms — physical, mental, and spiritual.

The Sarasvatī Sūkta section provided ends with:

ōṃ śānti̠ḥ śānti̠ḥ śānti̍ḥ ॥

Meaning:

May there be peace in the physical world, peace in the divine realm, and peace within our inner consciousness. May all disturbances be removed, and may universal harmony prevail.
