English Meaning:
May glory and spiritual radiance belong to both of us. Now we shall explain the Upaniṣadic teaching concerning Saṃhitā, the union or connection of sounds. It is taught through five subjects: the cosmic world, the divine lights, knowledge, progeny, and the individual self. These are called the great Saṃhitās. First is Adhiloka, concerning the worlds: Earth is the first form, Heaven is the latter form, and Space is the junction between them.

vāyu̍ssandhā̠nam । itya̍dhilō̠kam । athā̍dhijyau̠tiṣam । agniḥ pū̎rvarū̠pam । āditya utta̍rarū̠pam । ā̍passa̠ndhiḥ । vaidyuta̍ssandhā̠nam । itya̍dhijyau̠tiṣam । athā̍dhivi̠dyam । āchāryaḥ pū̎rvarū̠pam ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning:
Vāyu is the connecting principle; thus is Adhiloka explained. Next is Adhijyautiṣa, concerning the divine lights: Agni is the first form, Āditya is the latter form, the waters are the junction, and lightning is the connecting principle. Next is Adhividyā, concerning knowledge: the Ācārya, or teacher, is the first form.

antēvāsyutta̍rarū̠pam । vi̍dyā sa̠ndhiḥ । pravachanag̍ṃ sandhā̠nam । itya̍dhivi̠dyam । athādhi̠prajam । mātā pū̎rvarū̠pam । pitōtta̍rarū̠pam । pra̍jā sa̠ndhiḥ । prajananag̍ṃ sandhā̠nam । ityadhi̠prajam ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning:
The student is the latter form; knowledge is the junction, and teaching is the connecting principle. Thus is Adhividyā explained. Next is Adhipraja, concerning progeny: the mother is the first form, the father is the latter form, the child is the junction, and procreation is the connecting principle. Thus is Adhipraja explained.

athādhyā̠tmam । adharā hanuḥ pū̎rvarū̠pam । uttarā hanurutta̍rarū̠pam । vāksa̠ndhiḥ । jihvā̍ sandhā̠nam । ityadhyā̠tmam । itīmā ma̍hāsa̠g̠ṃhitāḥ । ya ēvamētā mahāsagṃhitā vyākhyā̍tā vē̠da । sandhīyatē praja̍yā pa̠śubhiḥ । brahmavarchasēnānnādyēna suvargyēṇa̍ lōkē̠na ॥ 4 ॥

English Meaning:
Next is Adhyātma, concerning the individual self: the lower jaw is the first form, the upper jaw is the latter form, speech is the junction, and the tongue is the connecting principle. Thus is Adhyātma explained. These are the great Saṃhitās. Whoever understands these great Saṃhitās as taught here becomes united with progeny, cattle, spiritual radiance, food, and the heavenly world.

He who is the foremost among metres and is of universal form arose from the immortal essence contained in the metres. May Indra grant me fullness of intelligence and understanding. O Divine One, may I become a bearer of immortality. May my body be strong and capable, may my tongue become exceedingly sweet, and may my ears hear abundantly. You are the treasury of Brahman, covered and protected by intelligence. Preserve for me whatever I have heard and learned, expanding and sustaining it.

॥ 1 ॥
English Meaning:

“Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Suvaḥ”—these are indeed the three sacred utterances. To these, Mahācamasya revealed a fourth, namely “Mahaḥ.” That is Brahman; that is the Self. The other sacred utterances are its limbs and the other deities are associated with them. “Bhūḥ” indeed is this earthly world; “Bhuvaḥ” is the intermediate space; and “Suvaḥ” is the heavenly world.

maha̠ ityā̍di̠tyaḥ । ā̠di̠tyēna̠ vāva sarvē̍ lō̠kā mahī̍yantē । bhūriti̠ vā a̠gniḥ । bhuva̠ iti̍ vā̠yuḥ । suva̠rityā̍di̠tyaḥ । maha̠ iti̍ cha̠ndramā̎ḥ । cha̠ndrama̍sā̠ vāva sarvā̍ṇi̠ jyōtīg̍ṃṣi̠ mahī̍yantē । bhūriti̠ vā ṛcha̍ḥ । bhuva̠ iti̠ sāmā̍ni । suva̠riti̠ yajūg̍ṃṣi ॥ 2 ॥
English Meaning:

“Mahaḥ” is the Sun. Indeed, through the Sun all the worlds are exalted and sustained. “Bhūḥ” is Agni; “Bhuvaḥ” is Vāyu; “Suvaḥ” is Āditya, the Sun; and “Mahaḥ” is the Moon. Indeed, through the Moon all the luminaries are exalted. “Bhūḥ” is the Ṛg Veda hymns; “Bhuvaḥ” is the Sāma Veda chants; and “Suvaḥ” is the Yajur Veda formulas.

maha̠ iti̠ brahma̍ । brahma̍ṇā̠ vāva sarvē̍ vē̠dā mahī̍yantē । bhūriti̠ vai prā̠ṇaḥ । bhuva̠ itya̍pā̠naḥ । suva̠riti̍ vyā̠naḥ । maha̠ ityannam̎ । annē̍na̠ vāva sarvē̎ prā̠ṇā mahī̍yantē । tā vā ē̠tāśchata̍sraśchatu̠rdhā । chata̍sraśchatasrō̠ vyāhṛ̍tayaḥ । tā yō vēda̍ । sa vē̍da̠ brahma̍ । sarvē̎-‘smai dē̠vā ba̠limāva̍hanti ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning:
“Mahaḥ” is Brahman. Through Brahman, indeed, all the Vedas are exalted and sustained. “Bhūḥ” is Prāṇa, the vital breath; “Bhuvaḥ” is Apāna; “Suvaḥ” is Vyāna; and “Mahaḥ” is food. Through food, indeed, all the vital forces are sustained. These four are each divided into four, making the fourfold Vyāhṛtis. Whoever knows these understands Brahman. To such a person, all the gods bring their offerings.

English Meaning:
Thus ends the Fifth Anuvāka.

English Meaning:
There is the space within the heart, and within that space is this Person, formed of mind, immortal and golden. He is within the region of the palate, hanging as it were like a breast. He is the source of Indra. At the place where the hair ends and turns, having passed beyond the two parts of the skull, He is established as “Bhūḥ” in Agni and as “Bhuvaḥ” in Vāyu.

suva̠rityā̍di̠tyē । maha̠ iti̠ brahma̍ṇi । ā̠pnōti̠ svārā̎jyam । ā̠pnōti̠ mana̍sa̠spatim̎ । vākpa̍ti̠śchakṣu̍ṣpatiḥ । śrōtra̍patirvi̠jñāna̍patiḥ । ē̠tattatō̍ bhavati । ā̠kā̠śaśa̍rīra̠-mbrahma̍ । sa̠tyātma̍ prā̠ṇārā̍ma̠-mmana̍ ānandam । śānti̍samṛddhama̠mṛtam̎ । iti̍ prāchīna yō̠gyōpā̎ssva ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning:
As “Suvaḥ,” He is established in the Sun; as “Mahaḥ,” in Brahman. He attains sovereignty and becomes lord of the mind, lord of speech, lord of sight, lord of hearing, and lord of knowledge. He becomes this very reality. Brahman has space as Its body, truth as Its nature, and finds delight in Prāṇa; the mind is bliss, and it is enriched with peace and immortality. Thus should one meditate upon this ancient teaching of Yoga.

English Meaning:
Earth, the intermediate region, heaven, the directions and the intermediate directions; fire, air, the Sun, the Moon and the stars; water, herbs, trees, space and the Self—these constitute the cosmic or elemental realm, Adhibhūta. Then comes Adhyātma, the inner or individual realm: Prāṇa, Vyāna, Apāna, Udāna and Samāna; the eyes, ears, mind, speech and skin; the skin, flesh, sinews, bones and marrow. Having explained this fivefold arrangement, the Ṛṣi declared: “All this is fivefold; by the fivefold principle alone the fivefold is fulfilled.”

When dealing with those who are accused or spoken about, observe the same principle: those Brāhmaṇas who are thoughtful, disciplined, competent, free from harshness, and devoted to righteousness should be your example. Conduct yourself toward such people as they conduct themselves. This is the instruction. This is the teaching. This is the secret teaching of the Veda. This is the discipline.
