Vaisheshika Darshan is one of the six classical schools of Indian philosophy. It is traditionally attributed to Maharishi Kanada, also known as Kaṇāda. The word Vaisheshika comes from Vishesha, meaning “particular” or “special,” reflecting the system’s focus on understanding the distinct nature of things in the universe.
Vaisheshika Darshan explains reality through the study of matter, qualities, actions, the individual self, and other fundamental categories of existence. It is especially known for its detailed classification of the world into different categories called Padarthas. These include substance (Dravya), quality (Guna), action (Karma), universality (Samanya), particularity (Vishesha), inherence (Samavaya), and, in later developments, non-existence (Abhava).
The philosophy also presents an early Indian theory of atoms, suggesting that physical substances are made from extremely small, indivisible units. It uses logical reasoning and observation to understand the nature of the physical and spiritual world.
Vaisheshika Darshan is closely related to Nyaya philosophy, and both traditions emphasize reasoning, knowledge, and careful analysis. Its ultimate goal is to understand reality correctly and overcome ignorance, leading toward freedom from suffering.
