Barbarik – The Grandson of Bhima

The story of Barbarik is one of the most inspiring and fascinating stories connected with Khatu Shyam Ji. It is a story of courage, devotion, sacrifice, and keeping a promise. Barbarik was a great warrior who lived during the time of the Mahabharata. He was the grandson of mighty Bhima, one of the five Pandavas, and the son of Ghatotkacha. Even though he was born into a family of powerful warriors, his greatest strength was not only his extraordinary fighting ability but also his deep devotion, kindness, and commitment to his word.

Barbarik was the son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi, also known as Morvi in some traditional accounts. Ghatotkacha was the powerful son of Bhima and Hidimba. From his childhood, Barbarik grew up listening to stories about bravery, righteousness, and the importance of helping those in need. His mother taught him that true strength should always be used for protecting others and following the path of dharma. These teachings became an important part of his character as he grew older.

As a young warrior, Barbarik wanted to become strong enough to protect the weak and defeat evil. He performed intense prayers and worshipped the Divine with great devotion. Pleased with his dedication, the gods blessed him with extraordinary powers. According to popular tradition, he received three powerful arrows, which became famous as the Three Infamous Arrows or Three Unfailing Arrows. These arrows were believed to possess incredible power, and with them, Barbarik could accomplish a task that ordinary warriors could never imagine.

The first arrow could identify the objects or people that Barbarik wanted to protect or destroy. The second arrow could mark the targets that needed to be defeated. The third arrow could complete the task and return to his quiver. Because of these three arrows, Barbarik became an almost unbeatable warrior. He also possessed a divine bow and great skill in archery. Despite having such immense power, he remained humble and remembered the teachings of his mother.

When the great Kurukshetra war was about to begin, Barbarik heard that the Pandavas and Kauravas were preparing for a massive battle. He decided that he should go to the battlefield and take part in the war. Before leaving, his mother asked him which side he would support. Barbarik gave an answer that showed his compassionate nature. He promised that he would always fight for the side that appeared weaker.

Barbarik then travelled toward Kurukshetra with his three powerful arrows and bow. Along the way, he met a mysterious Brahmin who was actually Lord Krishna in disguise. Krishna wanted to understand the true extent of Barbarik’s power. He asked the young warrior how many arrows he had and whether he could really use them to change the course of the battle. Barbarik confidently explained the power of his three arrows.

Krishna decided to test him. He pointed toward a nearby tree and asked Barbarik to demonstrate his skill. Barbarik accepted the challenge. Using one of his divine arrows, he marked every leaf of the tree. Krishna secretly placed one leaf beneath his foot. The arrow moved around the tree, marking the leaves one by one, and finally came toward Krishna’s foot. This showed that the arrow could locate even a hidden target. Krishna understood that Barbarik truly possessed extraordinary powers.

Krishna then asked Barbarik which side he intended to support in the great war. Barbarik repeated his promise that he would fight for the weaker side. Krishna realized a serious problem. If Barbarik entered the battle, he would continuously change sides because the weaker side would become stronger after receiving his support. Then he would move to the other side, and the balance would change again. In this way, Barbarik could eventually become the only warrior remaining on the battlefield.

Krishna knew that such a situation would make the outcome of the Mahabharata war impossible to control. He therefore asked Barbarik to make the greatest sacrifice. Krishna revealed his true divine form and asked for Barbarik’s head as a donation before the war began. Barbarik was surprised, but he understood that this was a divine request. Because he had promised to give whatever was asked of him by a worthy person, he agreed to sacrifice himself.

Before giving his life, Barbarik made one final request. He wanted to see the entire Mahabharata war. Krishna granted his wish and placed his head on a high hill from where he could witness the battle. Barbarik watched the great warriors fight, but he also witnessed something deeper. After the war, when the Pandavas discussed who had truly won the battle, Krishna explained that the victory was ultimately guided by the Divine. Barbarik had seen the power of Krishna operating behind the events of the battlefield.

Krishna was deeply pleased by Barbarik’s devotion, courage, and sacrifice. He gave him a special blessing that in the future he would be worshipped in the name of Shyam. Krishna declared that during the age of Kali, people who remembered and worshipped him with sincere faith would receive his blessings. Because of this divine blessing, Barbarik became known as Khatu Shyam Ji. His story continues to be remembered by millions of devotees as an example of selfless devotion and keeping one’s promise.

The connection of Barbarik with Khatu in Rajasthan is an important part of the tradition surrounding Khatu Shyam Ji. According to popular belief, his sacred head was later discovered in the region of Khatu. A temple was established there, and devotees began worshipping him as Shyam Baba. Today, Khatu Shyam Ji is lovingly remembered as a compassionate deity who listens to the prayers of devotees and supports those who approach him with sincere faith.

For children, the story of Barbarik teaches several beautiful lessons. The first lesson is that true strength should never be used with pride. Barbarik possessed extraordinary powers, yet he remained humble and respectful. The second lesson is the importance of keeping a promise. He knew that his promise could demand the greatest sacrifice, but he still remained committed to his word. The third lesson is compassion. Barbarik wanted to help the weaker side because he could not ignore someone who needed support.

Another important lesson is that courage does not mean being fearless. Courage means doing what is right even when something is difficult or frightening. Barbarik accepted his sacrifice because he trusted the Divine and remained faithful to his promise. His story also teaches children that greatness is not measured only by winning battles. Sometimes the greatest victory is the ability to sacrifice personal desires for a larger purpose.

The story of Barbarik therefore remains a timeless tale for children and families. He was the grandson of Bhima, a powerful warrior, a devoted son, and a courageous young hero. Yet his greatest achievement was his willingness to sacrifice himself for dharma and keep his promise. His transformation from the brave warrior Barbarik into the beloved Khatu Shyam Ji gives this story a deeply spiritual meaning. Whenever children hear his story, they can learn that courage, kindness, humility, devotion, and truthfulness are greater treasures than physical strength. This is why the story of Barbarik continues to inspire generations of devotees and remains one of the most cherished stories associated with Khatu Shyam Ji.
