“On Me fix thy mind, be devoted to Me, prostrate thyself before Me; harmonised thus in the Self, thou shalt come unto Me, having Me as thy supreme goal.” Ch. IX-34.

The ideas that are contained in Sloka 34 of chapter nine are repeated in Sloka 65 of chapter eighteen. But there is the word of assurance given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna: “I pledge thee My truth; thou art dear to Me.” The Lord further says: “Abandoning all duties, come unto Me alone for shelter, sorrow not, I will liberate thee from all sins. Flee unto Him for shelter, O Bharata; by His Grace thou shalt obtain supreme peace, the everlasting dwelling place.” Ch. XVIlI-66, 62.

“For a sage who is seeking Yoga, action is called the means, for the same sage, when he is enthroned in Yoga, serenity is called the means. When a man feeleth no attachment either for the objects of the senses or for actions, renouncing all formative will, then he is said to be enthroned in Yoga.” Ch. VI-3 and 4.

“Therefore at all times think upon Me only, and fight. With mind and reason set on Me, without doubt, thou shalt come unto Me.” Ch. VIII-7.

“He who doeth actions for Me, whose supreme good I am, My devotee freed from attachment, without hatred of any being, he cometh unto Me, O Pandava.” Ch. XI-55.

“Restraining and subduing the senses, regarding everything equally, in the welfare of all rejoicing, these also come to Me. If also thou art not equal to constant practice, be intent in My service; performing all action for My sake, thou shalt attain perfection. Ch. XII-4 and 10.

“He who is free from the egoistic notion, whose reason is not affected, though he slayeth these men, he slayeth not, nor is he bound. Though ever performing all actions, take refuge in Me; by My Grace thou obtaineth the eternal indestructible abode. Renouncing mentally all works in Me, intent on Me, resorting to the Yoga of discrimination, have thought on Me. The Lord dwelleth in the hearts of all beings, O Arjuna, and by His illusive power, causeth all beings to revolve, as though mounted on a potter’s wheel.” Ch. XVIII-17, 56, 57, 61.

Self-Surrender – Devotion, Humility, and Divine Freedom

Self-Surrender is the sacred art of offering the ego, desires, fears, actions, and results to the Divine. It does not mean weakness, helplessness, or escape from responsibility. It means living with faith, doing one’s duty sincerely, and giving up the restless burden of “I” and “mine.” When the heart learns to surrender, life becomes lighter, purer, and more peaceful.

The ordinary mind wants to control everything. It wants success without failure, pleasure without pain, praise without criticism, and security without uncertainty. But life does not always move according to personal desire. When the ego resists every change, suffering increases. Surrender teaches the seeker to act wisely while remaining inwardly calm and open to divine guidance.

Self-Surrender begins with humility. The ego says, “I am the doer, I am the owner, I know what is best.” Humility says, “I will do my best, but the final result belongs to the Divine.” This attitude does not reduce effort. It purifies effort by removing pride, anxiety, and selfish expectation.

True surrender requires faith. A seeker may not always understand why certain events happen, why prayers are answered differently, or why difficulties arise. Faith gives strength to continue even when the path is unclear. It reminds the heart that divine wisdom is deeper than personal understanding and that grace may work silently behind visible circumstances.

Prayer is a powerful support on this path. Through prayer, the seeker opens the heart and asks for purity, patience, courage, wisdom, and devotion. Prayer is not only a request for outer comfort. It is also a way of aligning the individual will with the higher will. A prayerful heart becomes softer and more receptive.

Self-Surrender does not mean laziness. A surrendered person does not sit idle and say that God will do everything. They work, serve, study, meditate, and perform duties with sincerity. The difference is inner attitude. Work becomes worship, duty becomes offering, and results are accepted with balance.

The biggest obstacle is ego. Ego wants recognition, control, superiority, and personal importance. It becomes hurt when ignored, angry when opposed, and proud when praised. Surrender weakens this false centre. Success, failure, praise, blame, joy, and sorrow are gradually offered to the Divine.

This practice also reduces worry. Worry comes when the mind thinks that everything depends only on personal power. Surrender reminds the seeker that human effort is necessary, but grace is also real. Do what is right, prepare carefully, speak truthfully, act kindly, and then leave the result to the higher law.

Self-Surrender becomes practical in daily life. Begin the day with a simple prayer. Offer your work before starting it. Remember the Divine when anxiety rises. Repeat a mantra in moments of difficulty. Accept success with gratitude and failure with patience. Before sleep, offer the whole day, including mistakes, efforts, joys, and struggles.

This path brings peace in relationships. Many conflicts arise because people want others to behave exactly according to their expectations. Surrender makes the heart less demanding and more compassionate. One still uses discrimination and sets healthy boundaries, but the need to control everyone becomes weaker. Forgiveness becomes easier when ego becomes softer.

A surrendered seeker does not become careless or passive. They remain alert, responsible, and active. They understand that surrender is not giving up wisdom; it is giving up egoistic anxiety. The hands work, the mind thinks, the heart serves, but inwardly there is trust. Such action is calm, strong, and pure.

Self-Surrender requires trust during difficulty. Sometimes life removes what the mind clings to. Sometimes plans fail, people disappoint, or circumstances become painful. The surrendered heart asks, “What can I learn? How can I grow? How can I remain close to the Divine even now?” This attitude transforms suffering into spiritual practice.

Devotion gives sweetness to surrender. Without love, surrender may feel like dry discipline. With love, it becomes joyful offering. Prayer, worship, mantra repetition, remembrance, and gratitude fill the heart with divine feeling. When love for God grows, lower desires lose their charm and the mind becomes easier to guide.

The fruit of surrender is inner freedom. The seeker no longer carries life alone. Pride becomes lighter, fear becomes weaker, and the heart becomes more peaceful. Even when outer situations are uncertain, there is a quiet strength within. The person feels supported by a higher presence and guided by a deeper wisdom.

In the end, Self-Surrender is the path of offering the limited ego into the hands of the Divine. Through humility, faith, prayer, devotion, selfless action, patience, and trust, the seeker becomes free from anxiety and pride. Such surrender purifies the heart, calms the mind, and leads the soul toward peace, grace, and liberation.
