What is Karma?

What is Karma?

Karma means work or action. According to Rishi Jaimini, rituals like Agnihotra, Yajnas, etc., are termed Karmas. There is a hidden power in Karma termed ‘Adrishta’, which brings in fruits of Karmas for the individual. Karma is all in all for Jaimini. Karma is everything for a student of the Mimamsic school of thought. Jaimini is the founder of Poorva Mimamsa. He was a student of Maharishi Vyasa, the founder of Uttara Mimamsa or Vedanta. The Mimamsa school denies the existence of Ishvara, who awards the fruits of works. According to the Gita, any action is a Karma. Charity, sacrifice and Tapas are all Karmas. In a philosophical sense, even breathing, seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling, smelling, walking, talking, etc., are all Karmas. Thinking is the real Karma. Raga-dvesha (likes and dislikes) constitute real Karma.

What is Karma? – Action, Responsibility, and the Law of Life

What is Karma? is a question that touches the very foundation of spiritual philosophy and practical living. Karma means action, but its meaning is not limited to physical work alone. It includes thought, speech, intention, desire, habit, and conduct. Every movement of the mind, every word spoken, and every action performed creates an impression and produces a result according to its nature.

In ordinary life, people often think karma means fate or destiny. But karma is not blind fate. It is the law of cause and effect working through life. What we think, speak, and do becomes a cause, and every cause produces some effect. Good actions create harmony, peace, and growth, while selfish and harmful actions create disturbance, fear, and bondage. In this way, karma teaches responsibility.

What is Karma can be understood through simple examples. If a person speaks kindly, trust grows. If they speak harshly, pain and distance arise. If one studies regularly, knowledge increases. If one lives carelessly, weakness develops. If one practices patience, the mind becomes calm. These results do not appear by accident; they arise from causes created by action.

Karma operates not only outside but also inside the mind. Every action leaves a subtle impression. Repeated anger makes anger easier. Repeated truthfulness makes truthfulness natural. Repeated laziness strengthens laziness. Repeated discipline strengthens willpower. Thus, karma shapes character. A person becomes what they repeatedly think and do.

What is Karma also teaches that intention is very important. The same outward action may have different inner results depending on the motive behind it. Charity done for fame strengthens ego, while charity done with compassion purifies the heart. Work done for pride creates restlessness, while work done as duty and service brings peace. Therefore, the inner attitude behind action must be examined carefully.

Karma is closely connected with freedom and responsibility. Past actions may influence present conditions, tendencies, and experiences, but the present moment still gives a chance to choose wisely. A person should not become hopeless by blaming past karma. Present effort is also karma. Through right thought, right action, self-control, prayer, service, and knowledge, one can create a better direction.

What is Karma does not mean that every suffering should be judged harshly. Human life is complex, and many causes work together. It is not wise to blame others for their difficulties by saying it is only their karma. Such thinking can become cruel. The right understanding of karma should make us more careful about our own actions and more compassionate toward others.

There are different kinds of karma spoken of in Indian philosophy. Sanchita karma is the accumulated store of past actions. Prarabdha karma is the portion that has begun to give results in the present life. Agami karma is the new karma being created by present actions. This teaching shows that life is connected with both past causes and present choices.

Karma also explains why people are born with different tendencies, abilities, conditions, and experiences. Some are naturally calm, some restless, some devotional, some intellectual, some strong, and some weak. These differences are not always explained by present life alone. The law of karma gives a wider view of human experience while still emphasizing self-effort.

What is Karma becomes deeply spiritual when connected with Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga teaches how to act without selfish attachment. A person should perform duty sincerely, but should not become a slave of results. Work should be done as service, offering, and worship. Success should not create pride, and failure should not create despair. This attitude purifies the mind.

Actions done with ego and desire bind the soul. The ego says, “I am the doer,” “This is mine,” and “I must enjoy the result.” From this arise attachment, fear, pride, jealousy, and sorrow. But when action is performed with humility, devotion, and detachment, karma becomes a means of purification rather than bondage.

A wise person watches karma at three levels: thought, speech, and action. Before thinking negatively, they pause. Before speaking harshly, they reflect. Before acting selfishly, they examine the result. Such awareness prevents many mistakes. Karma begins in the mind, so purification must begin there too.

Karma should also be understood as a teacher. Success teaches responsibility. Failure teaches humility. Pain teaches detachment. Service teaches compassion. Duty teaches discipline. Every experience can help a person grow if it is faced with awareness. Instead of only complaining about results, one should learn from them and create better causes.

In the end, karma is the law that connects action with result, intention with impression, and conduct with destiny. It reminds us that life is not meaningless or accidental. Every thought, word, and deed has value. By choosing truth, compassion, self-control, service, and wisdom, a person purifies the mind and moves toward freedom. The right understanding of karma turns life into a path of responsibility, growth, and spiritual awakening.
