Mythological Significance & History

Location & Landscape: Manikaran sits at around 1,760 m elevation on the banks of the Parvati River in Himachal Pradesh within the scenic Parvati Valley—just 4 km from Kasol, 45 km from Kullu, and 35 km from Bhuntar. It’s famed both as a sacred pilgrimage site and for its hot springs. Hindu belief: Goddess Parvati is said to have lost her “mani” (earring) here. Shiva’s dance (Tandava) and Sheshnag’s hiss brought forth boiling springs that revealed gems—thus naming the place Manikaran (earring).
