Kadampuzha Devi Temple

Kadampuzha Devi Temple, nestled in Kadampuzha, Malappuram district of Kerala, is dedicated to Goddess Parvati/Durga in her huntress (Kiratha) form, also revered as Vana Durga.

Remarkably, instead of an idol, the goddess is worshipped through a small hole (around 6 cm in diameter) in the sanctum—believed to be created by Lord Shiva’s arrow when he appeared as a hunter.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to be around 1,900 years old, and tradition credits Adi Shankaracharya with its consecration, erecting a shrine over the sacred hole.
The word “Kadampuzha” is derived from the Malayalam words Kadan (forest dweller), Ambu (arrow), and Azha (stream), suggesting the place where the hunter’s arrow struck the ground

Significance of the Temple

The temple is uniquely idol-less, with the goddess revered through the divine presence at the hole .
Worship is offered in three forms:
Vidya Durga in the morning (for education and career),
Vana Durga in the afternoon (for marriage, health, harmony),
Aadi Durga in the evening (for prosperity and wealth) .

Key rituals:
Poomoodal: Covering the sanctum with thechi (Ixora) flowers.
Muttarukkal: Breaking coconuts—if it doesn’t break, devotees continue trying until successful, symbolizing overcoming obstacles.
Thirukarthika, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Vrischikam (November–December), is the major festival—featuring Annadanam (food distribution) to over 10,000 devotees .
Other festivals include Rigveda Laksharchana, Dravya Kalasam, and Murajapam

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows simple Kerala-style architecture—no grand gopurams or gold-plated flagpoles.

Built using granite, wood, brass, and laterite, with carvings and functional aesthetic designs.

Adi Shankaracharya also consecrated icons of Narasimha Moorthy and the Sudarshana Chakra, along with shrines to Naga Kanya (serpent maiden) and Shasta (Sastha) on respective sides of the sanctum.

The original sanctum was reconstructed in 1949, and further renovated in 1993 according to Deva Prashna guidance—with granite stone and brass-tiled roof—using traditional methods like Siddharthakam.

A Thidambu (arch) marks the sacred spot above the hole and is removed only during Poomoodal to expose the divine presence
