Mythological Significance & History

The original shrine dates back to around the 17th century, originally located near present-day Victoria Terminus (now CSMT). It was destroyed in the mid‑1700s and rebuilt at its current site in Bhuleshwar.
According to legend, Goddess Parvati was incarnated as Mumba, a fisherwoman, to gain perseverance and later remained among her devotees as their “Aai” (Mother). She became their village deity, and the city gradually adopted her name.
Folk memory passes down that worshipping Mumbādevī ensures safety and belonging in the city—a belief cherished by migrants and residents alike
