Mythological Significance & History

The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 10th century CE by the Chola dynasty.
Later, it was expanded and renovated by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire, especially during the reign of Krishnadevaraya.
According to local legends, Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana and returning from Lanka, stayed briefly at this location on his way back to Ayodhya.
It is also believed that Jambavantha installed the deities of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana here.
